That movie didnt offend anyone in the audience. It showed both good and bad guys as being both whites and Indians. It was very sad at the end when bad white guys killed Stewarts Indian wife, and the audience was happy when Cochise killed the bad white guys. That is a good example, I suppose, that would support the argument that perhaps Costner wasn't sufficiently progressive (or whatever) when he made Dances with Wolves. I've not seen it in a long time, but I certainly wish TCM had been able to include it. I seem to remember the Fox Movie Channel showing it frequently. -

That may be a good idea, Valentine, but doesn't it usually void any warranty the player may have? Just so everyone who tries it knows that, I guess it shouldn't be a big deal.

I think it's easy to see some of the film's shortcomings in hindsight, but let's not forget the movie represented a huge risk and that Costner took a big chance in terms of what audiences would be willing to accept. Very few people expected the movie to be successful, because it was 3 hours long and a lot of it was subtitled for English-speaking audiences. There was no precedent for it back in 1990, at least in terms of Hollywood mainstream movies. Without Costner starring, it's doubtful that it would have been a hit, so I still think he deserves some credit. And let's not forget that even progressive movies about racial minorities at the time always had a white protagonist, including Ed Zwick's Glory, which is otherwise an excellent film. -
Here's one baseball fans should enjoy: *L.A. Dodgers host 'Star Wars' night? Just call it 'The Umpire Strikes Back'* The Los Angeles Dodgers will celebrate the 30th anniversary of "The Empire Strikes Back" by using lightsabers during their at-bats -- nah, actually that's completely untrue, I just like the visual. But the True Blue ballclub is marking the May 21 anniversary of "Empire" with a major promotion during their game against the Detroit Tigers. Chewbacca is throwing out the first pitch. The first 20,000 fans in attendance will receive a "numbered, limited-edition, foil-stamped 30th anniversary poster featuring iconic 'Empire' images coupled with a custom version of the Dodgers 'This is My Town' logo." Fans seated in certain sections will get Boba Fett T-shirts. Stormtroopers, Yoda, R2-D2 and other characters will also take photos with fans in Autograph Alley There will also be "Star Wars"-themed menu items with Boba Burgers, Darth Tater Chips and Ice Sabers, which sounds sillier than anything I could have made up. There's other stuff, too, and you get all the details and purchase tickets at www.dodgers.com/starwars or buy them by calling 1-866-DODGERS. --Geoff Boucher http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2010/05/la-dodgers-host-star-wars-night-just-call-it-the-umpire-strikes-back.html

But the white soldiers in Dances with Wolves acted more or less the same way that they acted in the old Hollywood movies, didn't they? I thought maybe that was the point - that now you were seeing the same kind of thing as in the old movies, but watching it from the other point of view. At least that's what I thought when the movie came out in 1990. -
