I liked some of the numbers, but not the movie as a whole - and I didn't even think that Day-Lewis was to blame for the film not being a bit more engaging. Given the cast and the budget, it should have been better. The only good thing is that it really made me want to revisit some of Fellini's films, especially 8 1/2

Favorite Movie Songs in French, Spanish...Whatever
HollywoodGolightly replied to Poinciana's topic in Your Favorites
That's a pretty good song. There's a French song in Gaby (1956) that I like a lot, I don't remember the name off the top of my head but will look for it. It's a pretty catchy tune, once you've heard it you probably don't forget it easily. -

The films of Sidney Lumet
HollywoodGolightly replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Films and Filmmakers
So has anyone else watched the newly-released Criterion DVD of Lumet's The Fugitive Kind ? I watched it just the other day. The transfer is certainly first-rate. I've not had a chance to look at the supplemental materials, since they're in a 2nd disc. As for the movie, it remains an interesting experiment imho, though probably not one of Lumet's best, or one of the better adaptations of a Tennessee Williams play. The parts that seemed to be most alive were the scenes with Brando and Joanne Woodward, but there are relatively few of those. Most of the movie seems to be Brando and Anna Magnani, and she's a good actress, but a bit dour probably even when the screenplay didn't call for it. I'm not sure if this is the way it was in the original play, but the interaction between Xavier and Lady Torrance seems a bit stilted. It is a bit hard for me to believe that a rather jaded character like "Snakeskin" Xavier would really care as much for her as he does in the movie. Even the age difference seems to work against it - Magnani was about 50 when she made the movie. By contrast, it seems Brando would have had a much better chance to make a good couple with Carol (Woodward's character). -
