Since they're playing his movies all morning and afternoon on TCM today, which is your favorite George Sidney musical? (Even if not on today's schedule). For me, all of the 3 starting films in the day's schedule are movies I could watch a million times - Kiss Me Kate, Show Boat (even if not quite as good overall as the 30's version) and The Harvey Girls are some of the best that MGM had to offer.

1950's Technicolor Superior to ANYTHING!

Anyway, I agree that the old 3-strip Technicolor was beautiful - if you're watching The Harvey Girls right now, you're in for a treat! -
Gloria Grahame a complete package

Morning, Chris! I thought about the similarities and differences between TMFL and The Big Country. The similarities that Scott pointed out are very striking indeed (at least they are to me) but what really makes the two films different is the epic scope of The Big Country. In this regard, it is interesting to see how both reflect in some way the personality of their respective directors, Anthony Mann and William Wyler.

"Rudo y Cursi" - a Carlos Cuar?n film

I would _love_ to discuss Solo con tu pareja, naturally. That was the first movie I saw that really allowed me to discover the potential of the "modern" Mexican cinema. And it is pretty funny, too - although some of the stereotypes in the movie, while considered normal in some other cultures, may appear a bit un-PC to American audiences. -
Well, for those who _DO_ like June Allyson, don't forget TCM is showing The Three Musketeers (1948) at noon Eastern today!

With the cast of "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon"

Lynn, Aren't there also a few titles that can't be shown because of some high-profile court decision (I forget the name) concerning the underlying rights to the source material (or something like that)?

*Let's talk Scooby Doo and Pink Panther!* Just when I thought I'd heard everything in the TCM forums... Make no mistake, I enjoyed those cartoons as much as the next child, I suppose, back in their heyday. Seriously, though, I'd like to thank Larry for sharing that amazing write-up - er, rambling - on The Man From Laramie. I've not seen it in a year or so, but I'm already anxious to watch it again soon. It's interesting to see how strongly people seem to react to the character of the son, Dave, because we've seen nastiness taken to a much higher level in some contemporary movies; although I guess at the time it was quite over-the-top. Keep on ramblin', vaqueros !

The films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger

*(I believe it's the only one I've watched 8 times in 7 days as well)* Tobermory, You sound like a true P&P fan. I don't think I've ever seen any single movie that many times in a single week, at least not since I was a teenager and liked sneaking out to the movies. Seriously, though, the accomplishments of The Archers never cease to amaze me and nurture my love for cinema, much as they did I suppose for a whole generation of filmmakers such as Marty Scorsese. -
*Yes but if I had to pick one I would pick Madame Bovinery - a real classic.* A fellow Madame Bovinery fan! I'm glad you enjoyed it, too!

Who are your favorite directors?
HollywoodGolightly replied to brandoalways4ever's topic in Films and Filmmakers
*I want to clarify that by no means I am implying that Cukor and Curtiz didn't direct films that are as good as Hitchcock's or Chaplin's. I am referring to different modes of production depending on the director's level of creative involvement.* Orson, You and Lynn have made a very good point, and I'm glad that there are still some of us who appreciate the artistic accomplishments of the "journeyman" director, such as Cukor, Curtiz, and Fleming. -

Human Desire...worth watching?

> {quote:title=Poinciana wrote:}{quote} > Thanks Holly, love noir, love Gloria and Glenn. I will watch it tonight. It hasn't showed up on TCM much, or if it has I missed it. I hope it's a gem that's been unintentionally overlooked by me. Maybe not the greatest noir ever, but a pretty good one, but take it with a grain of salt because it's coming from a big Fritz Lang fan. > PS I guess we're all having to go thru umpteen steps to post on some threads, so double thanks for replying. Me? I copy posts to my clipboard, go off the web, come back go to the thread I was on, press reply again, paste the post in and press "post message." Sigh... I think a lot of folks are having an easier time now than they were a couple of weeks ago, very sorry to hear you're still having trouble. Hope it'll get better for you soon. -
Yes, I agree with you completely. She was one of the finest actresses ever. *So I guess next week they will both be screwed up.* Let's hope that's not the case!

It's a great movie if you like noir - or if you're a big Glenn Ford or Gloria Grahame fan.
