I missed the naughty Jean of Red Dust and Red-headed Woman. Good point, traceyk - there really was a little something missing from Harlow's persona at that point; still fun to watch nevertheless!
  2. > {quote:title=Edgecliff wrote:}{quote} > I never had a problem selling DVD's on Amazon. I price them fairly and they go quite quickly. Sold several that I recently updated to Blu Ray (including THE SEARCHERS, SOUTH PACIFIC and AMERICAN IN PARIS. I also sell books, will sometimes go slowly, but I am patient. Oh, I wasn't referring to selling used videos on the Amazon marketplace - I was referring to the Amazon trade-in store, where you just print out a mailing label, send the DVDs/BDs to Amazon, and get Amazon gift card credit for them. And speaking of ammy, it seems that June 8-12 will be dedicated to High-Definition specials on their "Gold Box" section.
  3. Cute cup! As for that Bordie commercial on youtube, I agree with Bronxie that it doesn't quite sound like Hope Emerson; the voice in those ads is too sweet and cheerful. But I'd actually prefer to hear her voiced by Hope.
  4. No movie starring Johnny Depp can be all bad.
  5. It's true that a lot of the nuance in the banter is, unfortunately, lost in translation. But at least some of the obvious miscommunication is still easy to understand, as when the two leads get things mixed up by confusing stage right with audience right.
  6. The Great McGinty - Some fun electioneering next: Christmas in July

Here's a photo of her from Cry of the City with Richard Conte:
  8. Dirk Bogarde was in Doctor at Large with James Robertson Justice
  9. Peter Finch was in Far From the Madding Crowd with Julie Christie

LOL, sorry, I thought maybe it would save some confusion if anybody else reads that later on, obviously I didn't explain it so well the first time out. And I'd like to take the chance to let you know I really enjoy reading you and others here who have such thorough knowledge about all of the supporting actors in these movies, something that I confess I'm just barely learning. If you hadn't mentioned Betty Garde having been in Cry in the City, I wouldn't have noticed that at all, even though I just watched it last week. Just trying to learn something from all of you, hope you know I admire you for your knowledge about so many aspects of these movies. P.S. I agree the kitten is really, really cute and it just makes it that much sadder when something happens to him on account of Harper. P.S.S. Just a brief aside, is anybody here getting the 40th anniversary edition of Woodstock next Tuesday?
  11. > {quote:title=Bronxgirl48 wrote:}{quote} > Just a note for you and everybody who haven't had the pleasure of this movie -- there is nothing remotely "endearingly goofy" about Hope Emerson's portrayal of Evelyn Harper. Why someone would think such a thing is a mystery to me. I didn't say that I saw something "endearingly goofy" about the portrayal of Evelyn Harper, which is done (I think) fairly straight; I meant that I see that potential quality in Emerson herself, but I don't think it really came out when she was playing straight roles. Hope that clears it up!
  12. Gilda - Just blame Mame. next: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  13. It's sad to read about the falling out between Johnson and Ford, but as a number of actors who worked under him said in Directed by John Ford, he could be really mean, or at least appear really mean, to someone in the cast or crew for no particular reason except that it was someone's turn to be on his bad side. They say that sometimes those with a gift for the artistic also tend to have a more temperamental side, and it seems like this was definitely the case with Ford. It was a great thing for his art, but evidently not so great for those who were working for him.
  14. I don't think I've seen any of them - or if I did, I forgot already. But this is still a great set to have for fans of WB musicals.

  16. Peter, I'm really grateful to you for mentioning the flyer from Sony Pictures on Sunday papers today (apparently, it may be a nationwide flyer). I got the coupons and since I already have a $5 Best Buy rewards coupon, I get to save $10 on either Ghostbusters or Dr. Strangelove. I'll probably go with Ghostbusters because of the nostalgia factor. As for the John Wayne-John Ford set, the reason it is being so heavily discounted, I assume, is probably because the set is going to be repackaged in the Fall to include the Peter Bogdanovich documentary Directed by John Ford, so retailers must be eager to get rid of existing stock.
  17. George Chakiris was in The Young Girls of Rochefort with Fran?oise Dorl?ac
  18. Selling or trading at Amoeba can be a mixed bag, for sure. I suppose in many cases you can get more selling directly online, but it can take longer. Now that ammy has a DVD/blu-ray trade-in policy, it's yet another option to consider, although personally I haven't bothered to compare what they offer for specific titles. In any event, I think it's a good time to be getting rid of DVD titles that can be upgraded to blu-ray; their worth is going to continue to decrease. Even if you don't get a lot, it's better than nothing.

  20. > {quote:title=johnbabe wrote:}{quote} > i think the best acting in this film was done by Hebert Marshall, Bette overacts again! In the opinion of many, she was relatively subdued thanks to Wyler's direction. But you do have a point about Marshall and the rest of the cast, whose parts are much more subtle (with the possible exception of Sondergaard).
