Which actor would YOU like to have a box set of?

> {quote:title=coopsgirl wrote:}{quote} > The person I think deserves one the most is *Clara Bow*. She is pitifully underrepresented on dvd. Unfortunately the bulk of her work are silents still owned by Paramount and they're probably using the film reels to even out wonky table legs or some other such "useful" purpose since they don't actually care about them. One could only hope that if most of her films would fall in the public domain... well, maybe then we could see a Clara Bow boxset. -
I'm surprised there are any Coop shorts left you Coop fans haven't watched yet... Hope it's a good one.

I guess a petition couldn't possibly hurt. > Great minds and all that -- The Uninvited is numero uno on my list of Milland movies, with Alias Nick Beal second and Lady in the Dark third. > _Terrific_ idea, dianabat!! I would do anything for a set like that... I'd even sell my soul to Nick Beal. -

Since this is the "Ford at Fox" thread, I thought this would be a good place to list all the John Ford movies that are coming up on FMC, since they still have a lot of his movies, and TCM isn't able to play them as often. _Friday, June 5_ *How Green Was My Valley* (1941) 8pm, 10:30pm, 1:00am ET Cast: Maureen O'Hara, Roddy Mcdowall, Donald Crisp, Walter Pidgeon, Anna Lee. > {quote:title=traceyk wrote:}{quote} > However, after reading the enthusiastic responses from everyone here, I may need to re-evaluate my decision and go see it after all. You really should give it a try, I think you'll enjoy it. It's really well done, and it's fun to "rediscover" the characters from the original 60s series. -
cinemafan is definitely correct. Holden was, sadly, deteriorating rapidly in the late 50s, and you can see the change in The Horse Soldiers. He still looked a little better in his prior movie, Carol Reed's The Key (1958). William Holden (left) with John Ford and John Wayne on the set of "The Horse Soldiers"

Some really great choices there, brandoalways4ever, I wish I'd thought of Joel McCrea and Frederic March. I think both made a lot of movies at Paramount, so you know the chances of that ever happening.... -
Who are your favorite directors?
HollywoodGolightly replied to brandoalways4ever's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Scott, Did I read that right? Do you like Bunuel, or do you like that someone else likes him? Come to think of it, I guess I could picture you enjoying a film like Belle de Jour... coastalPNW, Hi, and welcome to the forums! You picked some awesome directors. In hindsight, I wonder if I should have left Jim Jarmusch off my list. I may not be the biggest Jarmusch fan, but I've certainly enjoyed most of his movies very much. I think Stranger than Paradise has grown on me over the years. -
Reuben "Rooster" Cogburn

Ah, I see. Well I checked on ammy, there are 4 Bette Davis sets altogether - 3 from WHV and 1 from Fox. Hope you'll be able to get one (or more) of them soon! -

True, but studios like WB acknowledge it, Disney doesn't seem to. > I'm sure sure each of us has ancestors that did something that racially unpleasant in their time...but do we have to apologize for that, for something that came before we were born? That's going off-topic. The thread topic concerns racial stereotypes in animated shorts and features. > And, hey, in case anyone if forgetting, Disney's figurehead has always been black...Mickey Mouse. The concept of race and ethnicity as we know it applies to humans, not the the beautiful creatures of the animal kingdom.

Warner Archives Discussion

Not to mention that you should be able to rent most of them from classicflix, anyway. -
> {quote:title=molo14 wrote:}{quote} > *However, I don't think there is any denying that the way Disney resorted to racial stereotypes in the past is a legacy that it must own up to, even if it merely reflected the widespread attitudes of most Americans at the time.* > > Just out of curiosity, what steps do you think Disney should take to "own up to" it's past? I think it could be something as simple as what Warner Bros. has done with some of its "Looney Tunes" and other cartoons which feature racial stereotypes. And that is, I believe, to add a disclaimer at the start of the short, acknowledging that such stereotypes are wrong, but that they reflect the prevailing attitudes of the times. Here is an example of one such disclaimer from a WHV collection: And I don't think that is something Disney has done - but they have edited stuff out of their animated movies, without saying anything about it. Or, they have withhold stuff from home video release, as in the case of Song of the South.

I think they're both great (Howard and Bogart) and each part plays to their respective strengths - and the contrast between the two makes for some great drama. Bette Davis is great, too, but I've always found Leslie and Bogie to play the most memorable characters in the movie.
