Hey, speaking of Astaire-Rogers, is anyone watching Carefree this Sunday? Here is a clip from the TCM Media Room: http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/index/?o_cid=mediaroomlink&cid=239447
  2. Well, I found a movie clip from The Mark of Zorro: http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/index/?o_cid=mediaroomlink&cid=239447
  3. I've finally decided to go ahead and order Westbound from the WAC. The print looks pretty good, and it is probably a lot better than what has been shown on other channels (Encore Westerns, I believe).
  4. Well, I was just reading the other day about Amazon's new trade-in program for used DVDs and blu-rays. There are many stores where you can trade in old videos, but this is the first time that I know that an online retailer is doing it. (I posted a thread about this in Hot Topics, because I didn't think it would fit in with any of the existing categories here, and besides more people might see it in HT than here). Some of the rates that Amazon offers seem pretty low, but for some folks it might still make more sense to sell them to Amazon than to give them away, I guess
  5. Cookie's Fortune - Sunny rigor mortis next: The Delinquents
  6. There were parts that looked too dark, but I think it could be due to a poor film-to-video transfer. In any event, I wasn't that concerned with the look of the movie, because I found the story to be very gripping. And I really don't think it looks bad at all for a low-budget, independent effort.

I think it is because his movies and the characters he has portrayed are genuinely most American. I would not disagree with that, Rey, but I do wonder how much of Wayne's success had to do with plain old luck and the fact he happened to make friends with Ford, and how much of it was due to choosing the roles he did. (That's not to say he had no talent - obviously he had lots of it). I'd also love to hear you explain how you think his personal politics influenced his choice of movie roles, but if you don't wish to talk about that, it's OK.
  8. According to digitalbits.com, Disney is releasing a new Pete's Dragon: High-Flying Edition on DVD on 8/18 with several new bonus features, though no Blu-ray is currently planne

Even director Logan eventually said he wished he hadn't used those, from what I remember. I certainly do remember the movie being fairly popular in its time, even without looking up the old box-office records.
  12. Keenan Wynn was in Shack Out on 101 with Lee Marvin

  14. Tramell, Catherine - Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct
  15. Nigh, William - directed The Mysterious Mr. Wong
  16. Hi shaydeelady, welcome to the forums! The name of Herbert Marshall has only recently begun to really sink in, I confess, and I probably didn't notice him all that much before. However, I definitely took notice of him last time I watched William Wyler's The Letter and enjoyed his performance very much.
  17. That's more or less what I figured, bOb, I guess if I don't set my expectations too high, it might not be such a bad deal. I may yet decide to try it out for a couple of months or so.
  18. A lot of new groups have been added recently. I requested a Gloria Grahame group a while back and thought they'd forgotten, but they didn't!
  19. Did anyone watch Popi with Alan Arkin? I love Arkin in just about everything, whether it's drama or comedy - but I don't think he was at all convincing playing a Puerto Rican. Having said that, it's a pretty interesting movie, with a fairly original premise and - like Chon Noriega said - there were really pretty few movies at the time that dealt with Latinos that weren't basically gang movies. Rita Moreno is great, although of course her part is unfortunately very small. She really could have given the movie more authenticity with a slightly bigger role. The kids, of course, were great.
