  1. The Paradine Case - Hitch's favorite barrister? Next: 42nd Street
  2. That's a great story, Jenetico! Jeanette is a beautiful name, I would have liked being named that myself!

  4. Vincente Minnelli directed The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse with Glenn Ford
  5. Hi erzbet, You've shared some terrific Jeanette MacDonald photos with us, thanks! I am looking forward to Tuesday evening's showing of Sweethearts on TCM, and I imagine you are, too (unless you already have a recording of it). Here's looking forward to tomorrow night.
  6. Danny Kaye in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty William Bendix in The Blue Dahlia or in Macao ?
  7. There's a lot of great things that tonight's schedule has going for it, as it pays tribute to the great William Bendix. And one of the things I liked most about it was starting out not with one, not with two, but with _three_ noirs in which he appeared: The Blue Dahlia, The Dark Corner and Macao. Any one of these would be great on any night, but together they make for a formidable triple treat. And on top of that there's some more Bendix, too: Submarine Command, Kill the Umpire, Idol on Parade. It's a great programming coup, thanks TCM! William Bendix

While listening to the audio commentary on the Fox DVD, I learned that Joanne had watched footage of the real-life Eve, which had helped her considerably because the changes really were as quick as depicted, apparently.
  9. Aside from having both appeared in Hollywood Canteen, Barbara Stanwyck and Ida Lupino were never in a movie together, which is a shame, of course. A noir such as the one moira describes would have been a great delight, especially if Barbara was playing "the queen of the cell block". (Same goes for Robert Ryan and Dan Duryea, who to the best of my knowledge never appeared together in any film). As for the earlier entry, the one that makes fun of "MGM gloss"... well, maybe they didn't really make the greatest or grittiest noirs there, but anything with Walter Pidgeon would be worth watching, in my book.
  10. Eugene Pallette was in The Mark of Zorro with Linda Darnell
  11. Edwards, Ethan - John Wayne in The Searchers
  12. One smoothie cockney. next: The Adventures of Robin Hood

  14. Gloria Grahame as a desperate **** girlfriend? Jack Elam as a wall-eyed simpleton? That's high-octane noir, as far as I'm concerned! This is great stuff, moira, you could probably use them in one of the movie morlocks blog entries!

But shouldn't Hawks have had enough clout by that point in his career to avoid too much interference from the suits? I'm not saying a bigger confrontation wouldn't have been more in keeping with what came before. But, at the same time, I wonder: would it have been more conventional storytelling?
  16. I love the attention to detail in your description, moira, especially the Bernard Herrmann score (and experimenting with a theremin, even!) and the very fine cast, especially William Bendix (tonight is Bendix night on TCM!), and Elisha Cook, Jr., who can be so great in those small-but-memorable parts!
  17. Jean Muir was in A Midsummer Night's Dream with James Cagney.
  18. Today's TCM daytime schedule is full of captains. So who do you think is the coolest captain ever in the movies? (Including captains not on the schedule for today). The list from today's schedule: Captain Applejack Captain Thunder Captain Hurricane Captain Blood Captain Peabody ( The Captain is a Lady ) Captain Boycott Captain Pirate Captain Sinbad Who gets your vote?
  19. It is not Rocky Horror. And it isn't exactly a horror movie, it just has moments that would suggest horror/sci-fi. But strictly speaking it's more of a drama, I think.
  20. Zeppo - Zeppo Marx in Monkey Business (1931)
