  4. Since so many of Hollywood's greatest stars were born elsewhere in the country and made their way to California to try their luck in the film industry, there aren't very many who were actually born in the West Coast. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Marni Nixon, and Elisha Cook, Jr. (all of them from California). Can anyone else think of other major stars who were born in the West Coast?
  5. Lonagan, Bill - Robert Ryan in Back from Eternity
  6. After what seemed like forever, WHV has finally announced the 5th volume of its noir collection: Warner Home Video is releasing its fifth edition of The Film Noir Classic Collection July 13 (order date June 8), with a list price of $49.92. The set has eight remastered classics, all seeing their first release on DVD, in a four-DVD set. Paired together are 1945?s revenge tale *Cornered* and 1947?s *Desperate*, from director Anthony Mann; 1955?s semi-documentary *The Phenix City Story* and 1950?s suspense film *Dial 1119*; 1950?s *Armored Car Robbery*, directed by Richard Fleischer, and 1956?s *Crime in the Streets*, starring John Cassavetes; and 1946?s novel-based *Deadline At Dawn* and 1950?s *Backfire*, directed by Vincent Sherman. Warner?s first Film Noir collection was released in 2004, and its success spawned subsequent releases in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
  7. Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum, a pirate's life for me! Well, maybe not quite a pirate's life, but for one delightful evening (and well into Thursday morning), TCM will transport us to the old world of classic pirate movies, back in the day when the effects were sometimes miniatures and the stunts quite real - no CGI effects for these pirates! *_WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7th_* *The Black Swan* (1942) 8pm ET When he's named governor of Jamaica, a former pirate sets out to clean up the Caribbean. Cast: Tyrone Power, Maureen O'Hara, Laird Cregar, Thomas Mitchell Dir: Henry King C-85 mins, TV-PG *The Spanish Main* (1945) 9:30pm ET Dutch rebels in the Caribbean turn pirate and kidnap the corrupt Spanish governor's bride-to-be. 9. Yes, it definitely follows the usual pattern for modern-day action movies, and yet I found it was more or less faithful to the source material (at least as I remember it) and if this is the kind of compromise that is necessary to revive some of the 20th century cinematic icons, then I'm happy to see this new 21st-century version. And, yes, I absolutely can't wait to see the sequel, I believe it may already be in the planning stages, and hope it will pit Sherlock against his arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty. I love to see those two characters playing mind games with each other.
  10. I thought it was funny - Mick LaSalle has a somewhat droll sense of humor, but I like it a lot.
  11. Thank you, Bronxie. This thread could use a few more photos! Kinokima, mrroberts, mark - those are all great NE stars, I can't believe I forgot Cagney and the Marx Bros.!
  12. I don't know if the tech team that takes care of the forums is also the same team that designed the TCM app for the iPhone - but if not, hopefully you could still relay the message to the right folks. I just got an iPad and was very much hoping TCM is working on an app specifically designed for the iPad's larger screen - I am sure the video clips will look just awesome on it. Keep up the good work!!
