"Crime Classics" on April 3rd
HollywoodGolightly replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Film Noir--Gangster
I have never seen Milius Dillinger but I would definitely like to. In fact I think the earlier version with Lawrence Tierney is still on my "to do" list, just one of those things where I wanted to save that for a "special" day but ended up almost forgetting about it. As for Bonnie and Clyde, I really do envy you - you got to see it when it was brand new and the shock value of the ending was totally undiminished by time. I would like to think I can imagine how it would have felt right when the movie first came out, but I have seen so many other violent movies that it is probably impossible to really relive the experience of watching it for the first time in 1967. -

Fun facts about your favorite stars
HollywoodGolightly replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Your Favorites
Just "Holly" is fine, arlene What I like about her is that she seemed equally good at comedy, drama, and also musicals (even if they did dub her voice for the songs). She was good at playing a wholesome, all-American girl and she could also be a deceitful femme fatale - like she was in White Heat. -
This is a great noirish western (or Westernish noir?) from director Robert Wise, not on DVD, but TCM shows it now and then - and they're showing it again on Monday at 9am ET. *Blood On The Moon* (1949) A gunslinger hired to drive off a rancher falls in love with the man's daughter. Cast: Robert Mitchum, Barbara Bel Geddes, Robert Preston, Walter Brennan Dir: Robert Wise BW-88 mins, TV-G I don't remember the plot details all that well, but I haven't forgotten the beautiful B&W cinematography - stark, crisp - much of it shot at night, apparently (it didn't look like day-for-night to me). Plus that cast... just great.

"Three Godfathers" (1936/1948) on TCM Dec. 23rd / 25th
HollywoodGolightly replied to Film_Fatale's topic in Westerns
The 1936 version is going to be shown on TCM on Monday morning, at 7:30am ET. A great chance to catch one of the best 30s westerns, and one that isn't even on DVD yet (and perhaps never will?) -

Well, I guess folks who were curious about The Silver Chalice have a better idea of why Paul Newman once placed an add to apologize for it. The good thing is that Nicholas Ray's King of Kings, which is coming up next, is a much better movie - possibly one of the best tellings of the story of Jesus Christ. -
The Bat Whispers is coming on June 23rd!

This is also one of those early experiments with widescreen photography from the early 30s (just like The Big Trail with John Wayne). The process with which it was filmed was called Magnifilm and supposedly has a screen aspect ratio of 2.0:1. I hope TCM can show a letterboxed version (there is also apparently a version of the movie that was filmed in the normal aspect ratio of the 30s, the Academy ratio). -
I think I may have heard something about that film, but I don't remember any details. I'm also hopeful that TCM may show it at some point!

Fun facts about your favorite stars

Fun facts about Virginia Mayo: * Birth name: Virginia Clara Jones * Early on, using her real name of Virginia Jones, she played a straight woman in vaudeville for four years to a performing horse act. The "horse" was comprised of two men known as the Mayo Brothers; hence her stage name. * Her vocals were always dubbed: by Louanne Hogan in *The Princess and the Pirate* (1944), by Betty Russell in *The Kid from Brooklyn* (1946), by Jeri Sullavan in *A Song Is Born* (1948) and by Bonnie Lou Williams in her 6 singing roles at WB from 1949 to 1957. -

Fun facts about Anthony Quinn: * Birth name: Antonio Rudolfo Oaxaca Quinn * Appeared in more movies with other Oscar-winning actors than any other Oscar-winning actor - a total of 46 Oscar-winning co-stars (28 male, 18 female). * Became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1947, just before he was "gray-listed" for his association with Communists such as screenwriter John Howard Lawson and what were termed "fellow travelers", though he himself was never called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. -

When Bing Crosby sings in the movies...
HollywoodGolightly replied to GreatMoviesFan's topic in General Discussions
I think he's got a nice singing voice, but he doesn't have huge appeal for me otherwise. As for the stuff he reportedly did to his kids - I can understand why this is one of the things by which many movie fans judge him. And they have every right to, of course. But it just makes me wonder - could there have been major Hollywood stars doing stuff that was as bad, if not worse, but that we just never found out about? What if one of the stars I like had done something like that and I'd never known about it? That's really not something I want to think about happening. -
