Fun facts about your favorite stars
HollywoodGolightly replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Your Favorites
I actually liked her a lot in Ocean's Eleven, Rio Bravo and Point Blank - but to each their own. -

There aren't equals to these women today - though there may be young actresses who'd like to be the Jean Harlow of their day. And I don't refer to the look per se, but the attitude. Do they succeed? Maybe for those who don't know the real stuff.

Thanks for the reminder, ValentineXavier, I watched that a long time ago, also on TCM, but I really would like to watch it again. I read something funny about Mitchum in this Sunday's letters to Mick LaSalle: *Dear Mr. LaSalle*: What's your opinion of Robert Mitchum as an actor? -Reader, San Bruno *Dear Reader*: He was great, the best Robert Mitchum-type actor who ever lived. Maybe the only one.

ValentineXavier, I totally recommend Capitalism if you enjoyed Fahrenheit 9/11 - it's hard to think which one is "better" for Moore fans. I think I enjoyed both equally, but in some ways Sicko hits closer to home because almost everyone knows someone who's undergone some horrible deal with an HMO or other health provider.

> {quote:title=ValentineXavier wrote:}{quote} > I watched *Dersu Uzala* in its entirety last night. Great film. Unfortunately, it was plagued with digital glitches and sound dropouts, the fault of Comcast, I am sure. Sorry to hear about the glitches and dropouts, but glad you enjoyed the movie otherwise. I still haven't watched my recording, but I do know the local library has the DVD as well, if I should need to check it out. -

VP19, Thank you for mentioning the "Gunsmoke" radio series - I didn't even know it existed! -

Thank you for posting this, arlene! I had missed what moirafinnie wrote about Helen. Hope you don't mind my posting links to moira's blog entries - in case someone wants to read them: http://moviemorlocks.com/2010/03/24/helen-walker-a-well-kept-secret-part-i/ http://moviemorlocks.com/2010/03/31/helen-walker-a-well-kept-secret-part-ii-2/ -
Fun facts about your favorite stars
HollywoodGolightly replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Your Favorites
Fun facts about Angie Dickinson: * Birth name: Angeline Brown * Had a ten-year, on-again/off-again relationship with Frank Sinatra. * Said she initially declined to play the ill-fated, sexually frustrated "Kate Miller" in *Dressed to Kill* (1980) because she felt her role on the "Police Woman" (1974) TV series had made her into something of a role model, but director Brian De Palma eventually persuaded her to accept the role. -

Sherlock Holmes through the decades
HollywoodGolightly replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Films and Filmmakers
One of the most unlikely adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes character came, from all places, Disney animation, in the 1986 movie The Great Mouse Detective (the original title was to have been Basil of Baker Street, a more direct reference to Holmes). I haven't seen it in a very long time, but it is being reissued on DVD next Tuesday and I may just have a look. -
Nicholas Ray's BIGGER THAN LIFE
HollywoodGolightly replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Films and Filmmakers
One of the interesting things that is mentioned in the essay included in the Criterion edition has to do with religious allegories - most prominently, of course, the tale of Abraham with which James Mason becomes obsessed towards the end of the movie. It is an interesting way in which Ray challenges the normal notion of what a happy American family was supposed to be like in the 50s. -
The best time-travel movies of all time
HollywoodGolightly replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Kinokima, There were certainly some great time-travel TV series in the past, including as you mention, "Dr. Who" - I don't think I've seen any episodes since the days of Tom Baker. Among TV stuff I guess I'd also include "The Time Tunnel" and "Quantum Leap" (I hope I don't have the names mixed up, as I haven't seen either in many years). -
mrroberts, I got very excited when I saw what TCM had prepared for us Tuesday morning... they're very interesting titles and I don't think I have seen any of them. Definitely going to be a great day for TCM viewers!
