[can someone please help me]

i am looking for a movie about a women who cannot read and her husband is in the service and he takes there children, so she goes to a friend in California and she is willing to work cooking and cleaning if her employers will tech her to read and a musician falls in love with her and helps her get her children back. I do not remember the name nor any of the stars as I was young when I saw it, but it was a good movie and would like to know if i can order it but have to know the name first.

when i was a little girl i saw a heart wrenching movie about a family that had to leave there I believe it was Kentucky home and the mom promised she would buy there home, anyway she made money by carving dolls out of wood and she stuffed it down inside her coat, her daughter got her leg or legs cut off by a train and passed away, anyway the women made a statue of her daughter out of wood.i thought the star was Jane Fonda but i have looked and cannot find it so I need help has anyone seen it and who is the star as well as the name please.
