I've been trying to identify a movie for several years now, and I hope someone here will recognize this plot. My husband saw this movie on HBO sometime in the 1980's, and these are the details he remembers:
There was secret research taking place in a cave or underground. Subjects were put into a deep sleep, and the researchers could control the levels of sleep, which they referred to as "sublevels". They used letters and/or numbers to designate the levels. They were experimenting with the levels and put some people too deeply into sleep, which resulted in death. The sleeping subjects were in pods, and when they died it was pretty gory; they possibly exploded, as blood spattered inside the pod. They tweaked the levels and found that at a certain level some type of monster would be released from the subject. Some of the researchers eventually escaped from the creatures in the cave.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any help would be deeply appreciated!

1980's movie, Indians and maybe a vision quest?

I saw this movie in the early-to-mid 1980's, or possibly in the very late 1970's. I remember very little about it, but maybe someone here will recognize it from the scant details. It featured Native Americans, and in one part (which may be the central plot to the movie, or may be a small part of it), a boy goes on some sort of spiritual journey. I thought it was a vision quest, but I'm not sure. I remember that he was to adopt the name of the first animal he saw, and that would be his own name. For example, if he saw an eagle was sitting on a branch, he would be named Sitting Eagle.
The only other thing I remember (and I remember this part pretty clearly), is that a member of the tribe died and they put him on a funeral pyre.
I wish I remembered more, but I was just a kid.
