Sure, Oklahoma is OK. I'm not a big fan of musicals in general, but I've seen bits and pieces of both, and State Fair seems to be more wallpapery than Oklahoma, and so a little better as a contrast to the trailer language. Wouldn't want to take the spotlight off Gloria, but Jeanne Crain is a lovely lady in her own right. Decisions, decisions.

Whaddaya mean TCM, small-time? Yeah, some of these guys are penny-ante, but Sam Jaffe and Louis Calhern are big-time all the way. The Asphalt Jungle is a superb film noir, but I saw it not that long ago, so I may skip it this time. Manhandled might turn out to be fairly routine, but haven't seen it before, so I'll probably tune in and watch. Only one way to find out how it stacks up.

Since the first nickelodeon opened, never has there been such an explosion of passion on the screen, never has such a sublime story about human destiny been told, never has the soul of human depravity underneath the outer surface of everyday life been so rawly exposed. The movie-going public will discover a whole new dimension to the art of the motion picture. You'll sigh, you'll laugh, you'll puke, you'll hang on in a roller coaster of roiling human emotions when you enter your local theater to view...State Fair. HFH.

Haven't had much luck in posting a Roxy Music song, let me try this one and see what happens. Roxy's heyday was in the early to mid 1970s, but like a lot of bands, they would go on "hiatus" and pop up with with a new album every once in a while. Here is a later version of the group covering John Lennon's Jealous Guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FuMi2hhg_w

The Blonde Fever trailer is a nice example of the species, especially with that heartfelt introduction of two new Hollywood players by Mr. Whorf. Mary did seem to be a bit over- wrough though, but maybe that's just that brief clip. Surprised there was no "Got Blonde Fever? Gloria has the cure" line in there somewhere. Anyway, HFH.

Holly, if u want to take it that way, you golightly girl. I was really thinking of all that Hollywood ballyhoo that was such a part of the "Golden Age" of the movies, like Gloria's cheesecake photos, which just about everybody did. And it is quite a nice shot of good old Gloria. Of course they still do it, but it's not as corny as the old school. I enjoy those old time trailers, where every picture is the greatest adventure ever to come to the screen, the greatest romance of all time that will set your heart beating, etc. Got to love it. HFH.

Joy Division had a brief run in 1979 and 1980, when lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. The band had previously agreed that if any member left the group, they would no longer use the name, and they kept to that, morphing into the synth band New Order, which went on to further success. Joy Division doing their semi-downer rock song Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Gloria "mixes paint with pulchritude." That's a classic line in itself. They just don't write them like that anymore, at least with a straight face. Hooray for Hollywood.

Yes, I don't think Act Naturally would be too high on anyone's list of best Beatles' songs, but it is a good little number, and Ringo doesn't get to be to the forefront very often. Going to try one more time to post it with a different number and see what happens. Nope. SMFYTPOS SOS
-
Good old Ringo got to sing at least one song on every Beatles' album. He does the lead vocals on the Beatles' cover of Buck Owens's big hit Act Naturally. Even won an Oscar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO2sjR6XP9U George is getting sick of SMFYTPOS. He's very frustrated with this garbage site. They better get on the ball or George will be angry. Ringo got shafted again. Let me try this one, It Won't Be Long by the Beatles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8ai5fleyjA

I don't go as much as I used to, but I usually went to a non-chain theater. The last chain theater I went to on a regular basis was Regal. I don't know if they have a strict policy, but I'm sure they would rather people buy their overpriced candy. Thanks, but no thanks. I did buy popcorn and a soda, so they got me anyway.
-
I've always snuck my candy into the movies. Easy in winter, a little more difficult in summer, but still doable. I suppose popcorn and sodas might work, but it would be pretty hard and might leave one with bad posture. I prefer M & Ms, nonpareils, and those jumbo Hershey bars, whose separate rectangles are pleasant to ration out over the course of the movie. Yum yum yummy.

Okay, the Who didn't work out too well the first time. Let me try the Who 2.0 and see if that turns out better. Taking a brief tour of teenage wasteland via Baba O'Riley.

I've always felt sorry for the teacher in The Blackboard Jungle who had all his rare jazz records used as premature frisbees by his students. But dude, you really should have seen that coming.

As Pete Townshend might have joked, the Who by Won't Get Fooled Again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp6-WG5LLqE But of course, Pete didn't know about unreliable garbagey old MFYTPOS. One more time. The Cranberries performing Linger.

The Jam were from the punk/new wave era, but added a mod sensibility and a touch of Motown to the proceedings. Here they perform Town Called Malice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay_DmG4uGnU&NR=1

Came across this interesting video by chance. From the Freddie Mercury Memorial Concert, the royal family of English rock, glitter/glam branch. David Bowie, Mick Ronson, the remaining members of Queen, and Ian Hunter performing Mott the Hoople's All The Young Dudes.

ROMAN POLANSKI - POLANSKI LANDS LIFETIME HONOUR!!! Woo Hoo!!!
sineast replied to CelluloidKid's topic in General Discussions
Just goes to show being a talented movie director does not interfere with being a sleazebag. One might think that with his own personal suffering, he might have tried to spare others the same. Apparently not. Polanski did learn his lesson though. He waited until someone thirty years his junior was above the age of consent and then married her. Way to go, Fearless Child Rapist. -
The trance rockers supreme, Mazzy Star, perform Fade Into You.

There's no doubt the Bible is a cultural document, though the culture it documents is rather parochial, though some of its content mirrors universal concerns. It does, again in a narrow sphere, tell at least part of the story of human activity. And its cultural influence on later times is significant and obvious. Despite all that, its primitive supernaturalism is a factor that renders much of its content and teachings very suspect.
