In the early 70's there existed a bar on Pacific Coast Highway just south of Malibu called The Raft. As a student at the new Pepperdine U. with a penchant for booze, I wandered in there with my fake ID one weeknight; it was empty but for a man and woman at the bar. Lee Marvin I of course recognized immediately. The woman had short, black hair and was trying to get him to leave. She became sorta famous later..Michele Triola, the first "palimony" gal. Marvin gave a look that froze me. I wanted to say something to him, but the look I received said "Back off." Edited by: Ascotrudgeracer on Feb 1, 2011 11:49 AM

THE most amazing dance number in cinema his BAR NONE! Eleanor Powell and Astaire dancing on that incredible mirrored floor to "Begin the Beguine." The way it builds up to a near frenzy...delicious and perfect in every way.

Greatest Revenge Moments in Cinema

Marvin deserved (in the movie, of course) to be trussed, laid on his side, and Gloria should have poured the boiling coffee into his ear...through a funnel. -
Not scheduled, but I'm waiting for it. With that "reveal" ending, I can't stop thinking about this minor masterpiece. Any fans out there?

From 1958, my two cents... This remarkable film for adults only features the finest career work of David Niven, Rita Hayworth and Burt Lancaster.

Baby Doll (1956) coming on next
Ascotrudgeracer replied to MovieMadness's topic in General Discussions
1) The film had the same eerie look to the exterior scenes and I think I've figured it out: just as no lens filters were used outdoors to make the clouds pop out (as in "High Noon") making the sky look drab and lifeless, that's what I see by Kazan here. 2) It proves out one inarguable fact: Karl Malden NEVER gave a bad performance. Please stop showing political movies.

Hmmmm...never thought about that, but you are correct. But this film, "Battle of Algiers" is so well made -- including a cast of thousands -- you will think it must be at least part documentary, but it isn't! Normally I can stand subtitled movies, but this is, well, do not miss it. Morning, Feb. 9. -

I believe it is true that whenever one discusses religion or politics, nearly every time one merely polarizes others to their own position; in other words, on those two subjects, you never can bring anyone over "to the other side." regarding political films (and I believe this IS one) do NOT miss "Battle of Algiers" Feb. 9. It demonstrates the utter impossibility of occupying a country that refuses to cooperate. -

Yes, freedom of speech, expression, press freedoms MUST be protected at all costs! After all, it is just words, and it is impossible to have freedom of speech...within certain limits. You all know the court ruling: you can say anything other than yelling "fire!" in a crowded theater...unless, of course, there IS a fire. Libel, slander...that's a different horse. Leave it to lawyers to make coin off that. -
Today's "Stars"...Rehab SISSIES!

If a car company or airline, had the failure rate of these "clinics" you yourself would howl. Wait and see, there will be Congressional investigations into "rehabs." -

I challenge you people on this board to check the PRICE it costs to go to a Charlie Sheen, Lohan, etc., rehab facility. It is a BUSINESS! Look at the failure rate, the re-addiction rate. It's a scam, you know it, but you have the common reaction to it: "Isn't it wonderful so-and-so it trying to change." People can cure themselves, but the rehab industry convinces society "you can't do it alone." Of course you can...for free. It's like dieting...it shouldn't COST money, it should SAVE you money; buy less food, don't eat so much, take personal responsibility. -

Where DeNiro disembowels the old mafia don who shotgunned his mother and murdered his father...BEAUTIFUL! Even though the old man looked to be dying anyway, DeNiro guts him with his knife, AND gets away. One reason I say Godfather II was better than the first.

One point is, rehab is an INDUSTRY! As far as alcoholism, geography has more to do with it than anything! PROOF: peoples living near the equator, peoples living in the Middle East, drink alcohol, but alcoholism rates are near zero. But the farther north one looks, alcoholism rates skyrocket (Russia, the Arctic). Then there is this: choose jail or rehab. Whatever happened to personal responsibility and sheer courage to change without a bunch of highly-paid experts? We're not talking about cancer. -

Ascotrudgeracer replied to Ascotrudgeracer's topic in General Discussions
"Rehab" is a lucrative INDUSTRY for business types seizing on an opportunity to get very rich. Why do you think there are so many "rehab" places in Malibu, Palm Beach and other lush locations? I beat the most serious addiction possible -- prescription narcotics -- by locking myself in my house until my opiate receptors were empty. I couldn't afford -- nor would I want -- a beachfront villa with doctors and nurses to wipe my...brow. On this site, we respect and honor the great stars of yesterday, not spoiled brats who cry in their piles of cocaine because "Daddy didn't see me hit my home run in Little League" ... which is why I spend my money on drugs and hookers. BORING! New Age "Help Me Rhonda" Mommie didn't love me enough so my millions of dollars are meaningless! BABIES! -
Charlie Sheen walks into "rehab." Can you imagine John Barrymore, Errol Flynn, John Wayne, etc., entering a "rehab facility"? HAH! Those oldtime, great party animals, including Spencer Tracy, wouldn't have anything to do with these lightweights, who cry to momma and doctor because they like to get drunk and high. Why I say, nothing new is any good. The oldtime greats have these pretenders beat in all ways.

Elizabeth Scott...Beautiful...Lesbian Icon?

Call me Mr. Off Topic...I care not. Debra Paget was the most beautiful, perfect woman EVER in an Elvis movie. Nobody talks about her, but she was OOOooohh! -
Elizabeth Scott...Beautiful...Lesbian Icon?

Seen it spelled both ways. "The Strange Loves of Martha Ivers" thought it was "Elizabeth" but I am often wrong. -
Loved her in all her pictures, especially when Van Heflin and Kirk Douglas were cast (you know the film). But the story is, she was gay before it became fashionable. OK friends, let's start burning up the 'net!

What is it with gay males and Joan Crawford?
Ascotrudgeracer replied to soniquemd21921's topic in General Discussions
My off-topic is (and has always been) WHY is it important for anyone to trumpet their sexual preferences to the world? I love organic long-grain organic brown rice with freshly steamed veggies, but I don't broadcast that fact to the world. (Oops, I guess I just did!). ;-D -
Dobsie, thanx for the heads-up. Voight and Schell...never better. I'm thinking there is a great deal of truth in this film; so well done.

"Triumph of the Will" (1935)

Starting sometime in the 1960's, this movie played daily for 12 years in San Francisco, of all places. -
"Triumph of the Will" (1935)
Ascotrudgeracer replied to Ascotrudgeracer's topic in General Discussions
Let's see...Stalin murdered 50 million, Mao Tse Tung murdered 70 million (of his own), Truman had the civilian populations of Nagasaki and Hiroshima incinerated (how that is not a war crime defies logic...apparently dripping water down someone's throat IS a war crime; seems like the opposite should be true), so these hot button knee-jerk issues are dumb. All leaders have people killed when it suits them. History is written by the victors, as everyone knows. Cinephiles are intelligent enough to watch "Triumph" without going out and joining the American Nazi Party, for goodness sakes!
