Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry aka Stepin Fetchit was a highly literate African-American who was the first black actor to become a millionaire and the first to receive a screen credit. He played stereotypes of the times and received strong criticism from both Black and White groups. But considering there were few roles for black actors as lawyers or doctors or any kind of professionals in mainstream Hollywood I always though he did what he had to do to make a good living. He was also a writer for the "Chicago Defender" the largest black and most influential weekly newspaper in the United States. Sadly in 1947 he had to declare bankruptcy. Even though he was criticized by leaders in the black community , in 1976 he was awarded a special NAACP Image Award and in 1978 he was inducted into the Black Film Makers Hall of Fame.
It was a mark on us as a nation in the treatment of certain groups as portrayed in films and the black actors and actresses were at the top of the list, but I can't blame him or the others for what they did in order to make a better life for themselves and their families The words of the great Hattie McDaniel when criticized for playing maids "I would rather play one then be one" still ring true...

Great looking art of the Duke. Wish my bank account was a mite bigger, so I could add to my collection..Thanks for sharing MissG....

It didn't hurt "Hang "Em High" to have good ol" Ben Johnson in it either....Just wish his role had been larger....

Howard Hawks "Barbary Coast" came out in 1935 and Frank Lloyd's "Wells Fargo" arrived in 1937 two years before "Union Pacific". Both are well done, big budget Westerns....

Iz, I know the stretch of road you're speaking of, I drove it plenty of times when I lived down there and you're right. Once I though I saw a one arm man waiting for a train, but it could have been the heat.....

He didn't invent the Winchester '73. What Williams did was to invent a "Floating Chamber" system that was used by Remington, Colt, Browning and Winchester in their different models...

Thanks for the info Iz, I had heard years ago about them bringing the Nevada dirt to film the interiors in Hollywood and using the same colored soil. But I wasn't sure if it were true or not.I'll check for the book. Thanks again.....

A truly great singer, nobody could sell a song like Sinatra, there were other great singers but Frank had a special quality to his music. He was also a damn fine actor until he got lazy and just churned them out to make a buck or his leading lady. But like JefC stated , just look at some of his work and when he put himself into the part he really delivered. His portrayal of a drug addict in "Man with the Golden Arm" is still one of the best put on screen and his withdrawal scenes are riveting.Like I said he did get lazy with his singing and acting at times, but when he bought the goods to the table, well, you were in for a feast.....

You got that right. An excellent actor who is often taken for granted because he is so good .... A natural,

There are certain films I have on DVD that if I an switching channels and come across "Casablanca" or "The Seachers" or "The Roaring 20"s" in all likely hood I'll stop and watch. To me it's like running into an old friend on the street and stopping to pass the time of day.Not all films in my collection, but certain ones.....But if it comes between "Frankenstein" or "Port of the Seven Seas" I'll vote for "Port" or any of the others mentioned which I've never seen....

"You American haters boar me to tears, Ms Barham. I've delt with Europeans all my life. I know all about us parvenus from the states who come over here and race around your old Cathedral towns with our cameras and Coca Cola bottles. Brawl in your pubs and paw your women and act like we own the world. We over tip, we talk too loud, we think we can buy anything with a Hershey bar. I've had Germans and Italians tell me how politically ingenious we are and perhaps so. But we haven't managed a Hitler or Mussolini yet. I've had Frenchmen call me a savage because I only too an half hour for lunch. Hell, Ms Barham, the only reason the French take two hours for lunch is because the service in their restaurants is so lousy. The most tedious is you British. We crass Americans didn't introduce war to your little island. This war, Ms Barham, to which we Americans are so insensitive is the result of 2,000 years of European greed, barbarism, superstition and stupidity. Don't blame it on our Coca Cola bottles. Europe was a going brothel long before we came to town."

I have never heard or read that statement regarding Jeffery Lynn. In" Memo from David O. Selznick" Rudy Behlmer states in D.O.S. memo from Nov.18, 1938, "...I saw the test with Paulette Goddard-Jeffery Lynn and though there was enormous improvement in her work....I was completely unimpressed with Jeffery Lynn and I think we should forget about him as Ashley"

The original "Time for Beany" was a puppet show from 1950 to 1955 with Stan Freberg and Daws Butler and was a Emmy winner for three years as a children's show. It was created by Bob Clampett and was bough back as an animated series. A big fan of the show was Albert Einstein who once ended a meeting stating, "Excuse me it's time for Beany"....

His father made it to 62 and he also died of a heart attack on stage in his son's arms...
Two famous remarks about Tyrone Power;
Wally Cox in an underwear ad..."Outside I may look like Wally Cox, But inside I'm Tyrone Power"
Romantic novelist Barbara Cartland replied when ask how she was able to write such hot and steamy scenes in her books while she was a virgin "WE didn't need sex, We had Tyrone Power".....

I was born and raised in New York and was a die hard Yankee fan as was my Mom and sisters. My father was a die hard Brooklyn Dodger fan. It got interesting around our house if the Yankees and Dodgers wound up in the World Series. My first job in TV was at WOR and they covered all the Met home games and I ran camera behind the batter. My 2nd job was at WPIX and they did all the Yankee home games. The control room was next to their dressing room, so was always seeing Mantle, Maris, Ford, Berra and the rest going in and out.If we wanted a autograph ball all we had to do was ask the guard in front of the dressing room door and he would put a ball in a wire basket and the Yankees would sign it. One year for her birthday I got one for my mother. Signed by the 1966 Yankee team. When she passed away she wanted my oldest son to have it and it's in a display case in his home.It was such a thrill for me to do all those home games and get to meet a lot of them and work with Mel Allen, Phil Rizzuto and "Red" Barber among others......

Stan Freberg was a comic genius and I still have about half a dozen of his albums including his "Stan Freberg Presents The United States of America" a complete Broadway show on an album. It starts with Columbus and ends with the end of the American Revolutionary War. It is a masterpiece. His parody of popular songs and TV shows are still classic pieces of comedy, like his send up of "Dragnet" with "St George and the Dragon net" and his poke at McCarthyism "Little Blue Riding Hood"," only the color had been changed to prevent an investigation"" His radio show on CBS was the last comedy show produced on radio. Also if you ever get the chance to hear his "Green Christmas" take it because it lampoons the Advertising industry on exploiting that holiday,

From the direction {John Sturges } and the acting {Tracy, Ryan,Francis, Brennan, Borgnine , Marvin } to the location { Lone Pine, Ca. } and film score { Andre Previn,} everything in this film works. This was MGM's first Cinemascope film and Spencer Tracy's last for MGM. Oddly Tracy was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, but lost out to co star Ernest Borgnine for "Marty"

I just returned in Mr. Peabody's WABAC { pronounced way back } machine having enjoyed meeting some old friends. If you were sick there was always "Dr. Kildare" , "Ben Casey" or Dr. Conrad Steiner {Richard Boone} on "Medic". If you needed a family who understood you there was always "Father Knows Best" or "Ozzie and Harriet Nelson" and their son David and Rickey. You felt safe with Sgt. Joe Friday on "Dragnet" looking for "Just the facts Ma'am"r Capt Dan Mathews { Broderick Crawford} out on "Highway Patrol" 10-4.. Of course there were the real shows "Crusader Rabbit" with Rags the Tiger or "Rin Tin Tin" or "Fury" or "Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle". Or maybe the best of the kid shows no one remembers Paul Tripp "Mr. I. Magination". If you wanted a real western hero there was always Hoppy, Gene or Roy. also "Sgt Preston of the Yukon" along with his faithful dog King., "Tales of the Texas Rangers", "Colt .45" with Wade Preston or "The Restless Gun" with John Payne or the town to tough to die "Tombstone Territory" and father and son in "Wichita Town" Joel McCrea and son Jody { sadly it wasn't on long.. If you needed a laugh there was "Topper", "Our Miss Brooks", "December Bride" or "Meet Mr McNutley" with Ray Milland. AH the good ol' days, well more or less......
