Always though Alan Ladd had a great sounding voice. I worked with a radio sound engineer years ago and he said he though Ladd had the perfect radio voice.
James Earl Jones- What more can you say.
Claude Raines-like velvet
Honorable Mention The Late Don "Thunder Throat" LaFontaine--Not a actor in the true sense but the King of Movie Trailers. If you went to a movie between 1964 and 2008 you heard his voice over for movie trailers...."In a world....."
Just a few , there are so many other great sounding actors and actresses out there and I'm sure they will be listed here....

All the films mentioned here are some of my all time favorites, but one that is missing is Jules Dassin's "Rififi" in 1955
Dassin left the U.S. after being blacklisted by the HUAC in early 1950's and moved to France. He directed "Rafifi" on a shoe string budget and with no big name stars.Shot in black and white it is one of the most thrilling film noir gangster films done in the 50's or for that matter anytime. The robbery of the jewelry store is still amazing and was banned in a few countries because they though it was a blueprint on how to commit a robbery.
Dassin walked away with the "Best Director"award at the Cannes Film Festival. If you've never seen it do yourself a big favor and rent it....

Like Beauty, Comedy is in the eye of the beholder. In my eyes Keaton was a Comic Genius as was Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Harold Lloyd,Laurel and Hardy, Bob Hope with or without Bing. The Stooges were great when I was a kid and I will still get a laugh out of them, the same as with Abbott and Costello, some of their bits are timeless. Zasu Pitts was more silly then funny and likable. The Ritz Brothers and Wheeler and Woolsey never did much for me although they did have a large fan base.
If you don't find someone funny, that's your loss, as mine is with the Ritz's and W&W. But the men and women Patsy Kelly, Zasu, Thelma Todd. There are not to many female comics I can think of besides the ones I mentioned. I'm sure I be reprimanded for omitting some. There were plenty of actresses that were great at playing comic roles like Jean Harlow, Roz Russell, Irene Dunn Claudette Colbert , Ginger Rogers and the wonderful Eve Arden among others.
But Keaton is FUNNY........

Considering all the westerns he did, I remember an interview where Henry Fonda stated he didn't like horses and they scared him. Which I can't say I blame him. I user to ride some and they always scared me.

I believe she appeared in almost every western series in the 1950 and 60's from "Maverick" to "Gunsmoke", to "Wagon Train" to "Cheyenne" and plenty other western and non westerns. She also played the murdered wife of Richard Kimble { David Janssen } in the TV series "The Fugitive". needless to say she wasn't in the show long and Beaver Cleaver's school teacher...Sadly she died in 1991 at age 60 of a heart attack....

Reed Hadley has a really terrific bass voice. He did many V/O for films like "Call Northside 777", "Boomerang" among others and documentaries . He was the original "Red Ryder" on radio. Nany many fil credits, "I Shot Jesse James" 'Guadalcanal Diary" as Richard Tregaskis the reported who covered the assault and wrote the book, yes he was Dr. Mason in LHTH., 2 TV series "Racket Squad" and "Public Defender". Sadly he died of a heart attack at age 63.....

It may have been Mel Brooks who stated the difference between comedy and tragedy :
Comedy is when a man walking down a street falls into an open man hole.
Tragedy is if I get a paper cut.........

MBF- A few others from the "Show-Me-State" : Jean Harlow, Don Cheadle, Betty Grable,John Goodman,Kevin Kline...Also Frank and Jesse James { the real one} and Calamity Jane , so many movies have been made about them they deserve "Honorable Mention"

"Racket Squad" was a series starring Reed Hadley as Capt. James Braddock. They investigated con and bunko artist. People who scammed the public.
The opening was a police dispatcher sitting at a police switch board answering "Rrrrrrracket Squad"
It aired from 1950 to 53.....

The main thing they could learn is how to be funny. Most of them have to resort to vulgar language to get a laugh. I'm not a prude about the use of certain words, but most of the so called comics have only those words to fall back on and I loved George Carlin and Richard Pryor . But I guess that's progress.....

From what I've heard and read of Samuel Goldwyn he used his kid gloves on no one. They say that's why he was an independent producer, because none of his pardners could stand him. His actors, directors, writers and most who worked for him said he would drive them crazy, but he was the most successful independent producer ever in Hollywood.....
-
Samuel Goldwyn who was a glove salesman before he started in motion pictures was the one who supposedly came up with the idea for the glove for Lloyd to wear and cover up the hand.
And Keaton was very funny.....

I think Dick Powell understood the medium of Television and what could be accomplished and the payoffs. There were plenty of stars that didn't want to be associated with TV because they feared it would hurt their careers, fortunately Powell and Niven and Boyer were not among them .I don't know why McCrea and Russell backed out, it couldn't have been money because McCrea was one of the richest stars in Hollywood. But Powell was savvy enough to see the potential and he was right. I remember watching his anthology series and I also remember Peter Falk winning an Emmy for one of the shows on the series "The Price of Tomatoes". Powell stayed with the hosting right up to the end. On Jan. 1, 1963 he hosted for the final time { of course it was filmed in advance } and the next day Jan. 2, 1963 he passed away of cancer at age 58.. Many still link his death to the film he directed for Howard Hughes "The Conqueror" which was filmed in the Las Vegas desert not far from where Atomic Bomb testing was done.Besides Powell a large number of cast and crew, John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Agnes Moorehead, Pedro Armendanz { he died as a result of a self inflicted gunshot wound, but he was dying from a slow death from cancer. He died in June 1963} all died of some form of cancer. Of the 220 or so crew by 1981 a reported 91 had come down with some form of cancer.
After Powell's death some of the biggest stars in Hollywood appeared as guest host on the "Dick Powell Show" such as John Wayne, Robert Mitchum {Powell had directed both of them in films} also Gregory Peck, Robert Taylor, Frank Sinatra and Ronald Reagan, which says to me that there was a lot of respect for the man in Hollywood......

She was born in Utah and attended Brigham Young University and studied for the stage under Maria Ouspenskaya . All reports on her were that she was just the opposite of the screen tough moll she played. She was one of the nicest people a lot of actors worked with..

Holly are you talking about the two talking while sitting and the camera is in the water. The story goes Ford was mad about something and to be a B******, he made the crew wade into the cold water while Stewart and Widmark were sitting on the log and carry this long conservation without a cut,,,,But it turned out to be something special with critics and fans.....

Iz hope I can help.Dick Powell started Four Star Productions in 1952 along with Charles Boyer. Joel McCrea and Roz Russell were suppose to be a part of it but backed and David Niven was bought on. The idea was that each star would rotate but they had only three stars so the fourth star would be the guest star..So that meant Powell and Boyer and Niven would star each week and the fourth week would be a guest star.. Later Ida Lupino came aboard but unlike the other Three she owned no stock in the Co.Some of the shows they produced were "Trackdown", "Dick Powells Zane Grey Theater" "Burke's Law" "The Big Valley", "The June Allyson Show" { Wonder how she got in there?} .Also were "Wanted :Dead or Alive". "Black Saddle" "The Detectives with Robert Taylor",'Honey West", "Richard Diamond, Private Detective".. These were just some of the shows they produced....

She loved doing that series and it showed. A female headed "Bonanza" I liked the series, But enjoyed it the most when she was the main character in the story that night. It made a star out of Lee Majors and Linda Evans.....Majors told the story of Stanwyck taking him to task when he developed a "Star Complex" during the show's run. And I bet when Barbara took someone to task they were taken to task.
Actually the series was based on a real family and ranch called the "Hill Ranch" in Calaveras County near Stockton Ca. After the father was murdered in 1861 the mother took over the thousand acre ranch with her daughter and three sons...

I don't hate this film, but it's way down on my list of Ford films. Even Ford disliked it calling it a "Piece of Crap" and he only did it for the money and as a favor to Harry Cohn, head of Columbia pictures, who died before it was released. Even after bringing in his # 1 screenwriter Frank Nugent { The Seachers} he was still not happy and the box office proved him right.Stewart and Widmark were unhappy also, but there is a fan base out there for this film.
