  1. Lots of actors make me smile whenever I see them, and most have been mentioned here several times, e.g. Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart (especially in "Harvey"), etc. Probably the pair of actors guaranteed to make me smile is Laurel & Hardy, and not just because of their on-screen antics. Knowing that they had a long and deep friendship makes what we see on-screen all the better.
  2. I've only seen Stanley Kubrick mentioned on a couple lists here. He is easily my favorite director, although I admit he doesn't necessarily have a broad appeal. One of my fondest memories of childhood was going with my now late father to see "2001: A Space Odyssey" in the theater...at 10 years old who directed a movie was the farthest thing from my mind of course, and I certainly didn't "get" the movie on all but the most basic level, but still a good memory.
  3. To the original poster's point, about twenty years ago I saw "Rear Window" for the first time during a Hitchcock film festival at a local theater. And yes, the first half hour or so was kind of boring. But ever so slowly the movie kind of sucks you in. By the time Raymond Burr discovered Grace Kelly in his apartment, I was on the edge of my seat and totally engaged. Subsequent viewings allow me to really appreciate Hitchcock's subtleties and handiwork throughout the film, from beginning to end. I would say give it another chance.
