  1. I hope they eventually show Swiss Family Robinson, which re-teams Third Man on the Mountain co-stars James MacArthur and Janet Munro.

And don't forget James Mac Arthur's first movie assignment at Disney, THE LIGHT IN THE FOREST. That one would be a premiere showing on TCM.

  2.   I am very pleased to see this pairing up of Disney with TCM. Last night was a pure delight. My only regret is that this looks like a 4 times a year hook-up instead of a monthly affair. The following is a list of films I hope Disney and TCM will air:

                     SONG OF THE SOUTH

                     SO DEAR TO MY HEART

SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON        - Both the 1940 version and the 1960 version.

The 1940 version, unseen for years, was made independently and released by RKO,but is under Disney control going back to when the 1960 remake was produced at Disney.

                     THE LIGHT IN THE FOREST

MAKE MINE MUSIC          - THE UN-EDITED VERSION. That means The Martins and The Coys segment and the All the Cats Join segment without any deletions.

                     FUN AND FANCY FREE

MELODY TIME              - THE UN-EDITED VERSION.     That means the Pecos Bill segment shown as it was seen in theaters back in 1948.

I am sure many of our members on this board have their want lists also. Please enter your wish lists.

  3. It's great to have Disney films being shown on TCM. I have only a few concerns. I want them to be shown as they were originally shown in the theaters. For example, if they show the Pecos Bill segment from MELODY TIME, I want the cigarette put back in his mouth. It was eliminated for video. Regarding MAKE MINE MUSIC,there were 10 segments not 9 as in the video presentation, restore the Hatfield and Coys segment. I also think a Benny Goodman segment was eliminated for the video presentation of one of these films.

  4. So that should rule out any showings of Marion Davies' movies, or Norma Shearer movies, or Bella Darvi movies or Juliette Greco movies (oh wait, scratch those last two), or THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI, or a couple of Paulette Goddard movies done by Chaplin, or.....

Bella Darvi would not have gone anywhere without the help of Darryl Zanuck.  The same for a very nice lady,Ms.Ralston through her marriage to Herbert Yates.

  5.   Two great character actors worked at Republic, Lloyd Nolan and Charles Bickford. Lloyd Nolan appeared in GANGS OF CHICAGO and BEHIND THE NEWS, both from 1940. Charles Bickford was in GANGS OF NEW YORK made in 1938 with Ann Dvorak.

Other Republic films I would like to see starred Don Barry on hiatus from his western films.

                          REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR

                         THE TRAITOR WITHIN

                          THE WESTSIDE KID

                          THE CHICAGO KID

                          THE LAST CROOKED MILE

SLIPPY MC GEE  .... and a few others.

  7. yeah, but aren't 50s, 60s and 70s oldsters entitled to a few crumbs every now and then?  older folks count too.

who died and made the friggin' millennials king?

We usually get movies more to the liking of seniors in the Fall and Christmas season.  That way Hollywood can show off its intelligence come  Academy Award nomination  time  early the following year.

  8. simple enough. they handed the reins of the industry over to twentysomethings and thirtysomethings who were weaned on video games and home computers, captain planet and power rangers...and it is showing.

Exodus of Gods and Kings is a perfect example.

Fifty or even fourty years ago a film with that kind of subject matter would have been either a biblical or an historical epic, but in today's environment it is merely just another vehicle for hyper-kinetic action sequences courtesy of cgi.

Hollywood today is just one long continuous 3rd season of the original star trek.

    ...and it is getting worse.

You nailed it perfectly. I know it's not good to judge something before you see it,but I predict it will be all special effects without a heart and soul. The Ten Commandments of 60 years ago had some silly dialogue, but it was an emotional experience. At least for me.The comic book industry has taken over Hollywood.  Hollywood goes where the money is.

  9. What exactly are they doing with that library?

Really nothing. Well I should say , put on the market about 15 mod DVD titles per year; mostly from their package of Universal horror films from the 30's and 40's and  Jon Hall / Maria Montez costumers from the 40's. Where is ? :

                                           CORVETTE  K-225

                                    RIDE THE PINK HORSE

                                      THE WEB

                                   NORTH WEST MOUNTED

                                   THE SUSPECT

                                   BACK STREET  [1932]

                                         IVY

                                   FOLLOW THE BOYS [1944]

                                    SIX BRIDGES TO CROSS

KISS THE BLOOD OFF MY HANDS

                                     ETC.

  10. I posted this thread 2 months ago. I found Barry Monush's e-mail address and I contacted him yesterday. He was very kind in replying to my query so quickly. For those of us who loved these books it is sad to know that Volume 64 was the last of its kind. Mr.Monush said   a lack of interest, the large number of releases each year and the internet have brought SCREEN WORLD to an end.

  11. just did a goole search, which in turn took me to...TCM and a review from Leonard's book! Has the review changed thru the years?

D: John Cromwell. Randolph Scott, Kay Johnson, Arthur Hohl, Robert Barrat, Janet Beecher, Edward Ellis, Dorothy Burgess. Little- known, well-acted adaptation of a Phil Stong novel, focusing on unhappy wife Johnson and her desire for bachelor Scott. Highly unusual (for its time) in its depiction of the underbelly of small-town life, filled with gossip, prejudice, and hypocrisy.

Sounds a bit like the Columbia film Party Wire, with Jean Arthur, and Victor Jory, also from 1935

Yes, that's the review I am referring to.  Mr. Maltin gave it 3 stars. I must say 90 % of the time I agree with his reviews.

  12.    By the way, there is another adaptation of a Philip Stong novel that never gets played on TCM for one reason or another. I don't have it. I have never seen it. It's called VILLAGE TALE, made at RKO in 1935 with Randolph Scott and Kay Johnson. See what Leonard Maltin has to say about it in one of his yearly film guides.

  13. The Stranger's Returns is a Pre-Code movies.   Often pre-code movies were re-released after the production code was enforced in July 1934,  and changes were made to the movie because of the code.     Note that this is just one reason there are multiple versions of films.  e.g.  there were different versions for different parts of the country (theaters in the south and midwest would get a different version than theaters in the west or northeast),   US versions (usually with a ligher ending),  verses European versions (with a more realistic \ darker ending),   there were versions for the troops overseas and than the US release (e.g. The Big Sleep)  etc...

So in many ways there is no such thing as the 'original' version.   e.g. what is 'original' for the south isn't the same for the west.

The owners of the copyright decides what version they release.  Do they care?  Well in most cases NO.   They are releasing a movie to make money not to protect the integrity of the film as art.   In the perfect world all versions would be made available so one could choose which one they want.

I beg to differ with you. Not all versions should be made available. The version that really matters is the one directed by the director, King Vidor.  By the way, the complete version I have is on a disc and doesn't look to be that old. I would venture to guess that it might have been on TNT before TCM ever got started.

  14. Thanks for telling us what the original real ending is.  Sounds better.  I can't understand why "the powers that be" cut the last minute out.  Amazing are the screen mutilations big and small that take place for no good reason or seemingly for no good reason.

You're quite welcome. I wonder if "the powers that be" will restore the missing footage. If I have it,they should have it. If they care...???
