  1. can you describe the missing 60 sec.??

I would be most happy to do that.  I thought my post was going to drift into thread oblivion. Glad to see there is someone out there who cares about completeness.  I am going to use capital letters. I am not yelling; just want to make things clear.

               TCM  VERSION

MIRIAM HOPKINS AND FRANCHOT TONE  MEET BY A FENCE OUT IN THE FIELD. FRANCHOT TONE TELLS MIRIAM HOPKINS HE IS GOING TO ACCEPT THE COLLEGE TEACHING JOB. MIRIAM HOPKINS IS SAD BUT UNDERSTANDS. FRANCHOT TONE SAYS,"GOODBYE....YOU'RE A GRAND GIRL".  THEN WE SEE A CLOSE-UP OF A PLOW TILLING THE EARTH WITH THE WORDS THE END ON THE SCREEN.

             THE COMPLETE VERSION

MIRIAM HOPKINS AND FRANCHOT TONE MEET BY A FENCE OUT IN THE FIELD. FRANCHOT TONE TELLS MIRIAM HOPKINSHE IS GOING TO ACCEPT THE COLLEGE TEACHING JOB. MIRIAM HOPKINS IS SAD BUT UNDERSTANDS. FRANCHOT TONE SAYS,"GOODBYE....YOU'RE A GRAND GIRL".  STU ERWIN ATOP A HORSE APPEARS ON SCREEN AND YELLS TO MIRIAM HOPKINS,"COME ON BOSS, WE'RE STARTIN'".  A SMILING MIRIAM HOPKINS STILL STANDING NEXT TO FRANCHOT TONE SAYS TO FRANCHOT TONE,"BOSS...HE MEANS ME". AS SHE WALKS AWAY FROM FRANCHOT  TONE SHE WAVES GOODBYE AND RIDES OFF WITH STU ERWIN. SHE NOW HAS FULLY ACCEPTED HER NEW LIFE AS A FARMER AND COUNTRY GIRL. THEN , AS IN THE VERSION SHOWN ON TCM,WE SEE A CLOSE-UP OF A PLOW TILLING THE EARTH WITH THE WORDS THE END ON THE SCREEN.

I hope, not only you , but others who care about completeness will take note of what I have just written; especially the Warner Archive who might want to release this excellent film on DVD.

  2. So why was the last minute cut out on the TCM version shown?  I had not seen the movie before.  Enjoyed it a lot.  Why and who cut out the last minute you mention?  A Hays Code mutilation of later years "for the public good"?

I have no idea as to why and who. The missing part would be of no interest whatsoever to the Hays office.

  3.   After many years of not being able to screen this movie,it finally appeared on TCM.  An excellent story with wonderful acting by Barrymore, Hopkins, Tone and Erwin. There is one major problem with the print shown on TCM tonight. About 60 seconds at the very end is missing. It does not end on such  a down note as seen on TCM tonight. I know !  I have the movie in my collection. I hope that if the Warner Archive plans to release a DVD of this movie, they will restore the missing footage. It is so much more uplifting.

  4.    Jewish people are a very happy people when they are not harassed or at the worst murdered by people who call themselves Christians. The last two thousand years bear this out. Why did many Jewish actors change their names ? They didn't do it because they were ashamed of their heritage. They did it so they could work and be popular among those misguided souls out there who went to the movies.

  5. Well, Cary Grant was an ad man in MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE. And he and Myrna Loy had a maid (played by Louise Beavers). Only in the movies, right?

By the way, SKYLARK is coming up again on September 14th for those who missed it last night.

If your cable provider is Comcast, SKYLARK should be on On Demand for the next few days.

  6.   This is a post for those who appreciate trivia. No, I am not hijacking this thread. It all got started when the fact that Lauren Bacall had to keep her Jewish heritage a secret from director, Howard Hawks. Mr. Hawks had a malady called anti-semitism. Well, enough of that. On TCM today was THE OUTRAGE. Guess what the main players had in common.

         PAUL NEWMAN

         CLAIRE BLOOM

         LAURENCE HARVEY

         EDWARD G. ROBINSON

         WILLIAM SHATNER

         HOWARD DA SILVA

  7.   I had never seen this movie . It was hidden, until tonight , in the Universal vault. Made by Paramount in 1941. It is a thoroughly delightful comedy played to perfection by an impeccable cast of Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, Brian Aherne and Walter Abel. Anybody else out there have the same opinion ?

  8.   I guess my favorites are those coffee table studio histories listing their films in chronological order with comments on each fillm. The series started with MGM in the mid-70's and finished with Columbia around 1989. I also am very proud of my SCREEN WORLD collection. Of course, I have many books on James Cagney. My favorite being CAGNEY BY CAGNEY.

  9. YES!  Or if they were African American or Arabic or Oriental.  Doesn't matter as it has nothing to do with the topic in the first place.

I would think a Jews would be more offended than me by the postings.

If you want to hijack a topic, start a new one.

I am quite sure Lauren Bacall wouldn't mind if she read it.

  10. We've stumbled upon an expert on who's Jewish. Too bad my late grandfather never got to meet you.

Here's a few more.  HE RAN ALL THE WAY with John Garfield and Shelley Winters,SON OF ALI BABA with Tony Curtis,Piper Laurie, and Susan Cabot. There's 3 in that one.  FORGET PARIS with Billy Crystal and Debra Winger. DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS with Richard Dreyfuss and Bette Midler. SCENES FROM A MALL with Woody Allen and Bette Midler. FUNNY LADY with Barbara Streisand and James Caan. Thanks for the compliment. That's what happens when you encourage me. I'll meet your grandfather up there someday.

  11.   Yes,it's official. There will be a tribute to Lauren Bacall beginning on Sept. 15 and concluding on Sept. 16. The Jewish Experience on Film theme for Sept. 16 will go on as originally scheduled. Topbilled had it right.

  12.   Just don't bump SKYLARK, AN ACT OF MURDER, SWORD IN THE DESERT.  Premieres from the vaults of Universal are hard to come by.  I hope TCM is smart enough to pick a day when there are no premieres on the schedule.

  13.    Please TCM , DON'T change the September 16 schedule as it stands now. The Jewish Experience on Film is something I am looking forward to. Find another day for her well deserved tribute. As a person of Jewish heritage herself, I am sure Lauren Bacall would agree with me.
