To clarify, I didn't mean the actress that lead the others for screen test was British, Nova Pilbeam was Selznick's suggestion. The best screen test was this young American actress who went on to win supporting Oscar and nomination for Best Actress for one of TCM's all time favorite movies. Hope that helps.

Hint: Not to worry. She went on to great things, a supporting actress Oscar for a film made in the same decade and an Oscar nomination for leading actress a few years later.

I saw Far from Heaven too. A wonderful film and will check it out again to watch for Juanita Moore. On one of these threads there was a post about a British young girl who was a suggestion by Selznick to a director of this Best Picture winner in 1940. That film had screen tests of some great actresses but the one the director, Selznick liked best didn't get the role. Any guesses as to who that young actress was?

Yep..that's it. Back to you.

Not the one. This one is a Claudette Colbert movie.

I can't find the written word but a hunch is Juanita Moore who was nominated for Imitation of Life and now semi-retired?.. could have appeared in Far from Heaven?

Keep Calm & Carry On--The British Are Coming!

A British actor's career of 45 yrs prospered by supporting character roles. He had many good roles until in the 1960's when he was cast as a supporting character that would change his image to something of a straightman/authority figure. A well-loved role that carried him through another 20 yrs in that role. Who is he? -

Wild guess, they feature American actors portraying Asians? -
I'll try a cheap shot at this (being that it's footage of her). "Chaplin", Modern Times with Paulette Goddard?

I read once that Elizabeth Taylor had been on the top of a list of actresses considered for the role along with Fernando Lamas as Emile. Is either/or correct?
