  1. *The Mouse That Roared* was released in 1959, almost 1960. It's about a whole country of innocents, who invade the US and win! It was the first Peter Sellers film I saw, when I was 11 or 12. I loved it then, and still do. It had a great cast, with Leo McKern, William Hartnell, and Jean Seberg, to name a few.

  4. I watched I Love Lucy when I was a kid. But, even then, I thought it was stupid. I couldn't see why Desi stayed married to her. Lucy's noirs are much better than her TV shows.
  5. Yeah, the western slang giddy-up would probably accurate for ungawa. "Andiamo" literally means walk, but yes, it is used as you say.
  6. > {quote:title=Ronin wrote:}{quote} > > Noir: > High and Low (probably my favorite movie) Unquestionably a fine film. But, for a Kurosawa/Mifune noir, I like *Stray Dog* even better.
  7. > {quote:title=redriver wrote:}{quote} > In the Dell comic books, it's spelled "ungawa," and I think your interpretation is correct. There's also "kreegah," which translates as ATTACK! So, I was right the first time. My only mistake was thinking I'd made a mistake... Long time since I read any Dell Tarzan comics, but they probably had it right. It's been so long, predating the internet, that I don't remember where I found out that many of Tarzan's 'native' words are actually Swahili, which is a sort of aggregated language, with Bantu, Arabic, English, and many other languages incorporated.
  8. I hadn't checked www.allmovie.com for a few days. I clicked on it, and it is now "allRovi," with worse format changes than the TCM website. They don't even list running times any more! I use the IMDb, but allmovie had better descriptions, professional reviews, and ratings. They don't seem to offer the option to use the old format, like IMDb does. They plan to do the same to allmusic.com. UGH!
  9. > {quote:title=audreyforever wrote:}{quote} > I'm always shocked when people say the 2005 King Kong is better than the 1933. But that's just me! Not just you, me too. I love the 1966 *Casino Royale*, but would not compare it to the 2006 film of the same name, which I also like. I can't really call it a remake, since both films are so different, in so many ways.
  10. Well, if I understand my 40's Hollywood Swahili correctly, "cumbe" means "come" and "ungawa" means "go," "get moving," or 'hurry up." Tembo is elephant, simba is lion, and juju is magic. But, you probably knew those... addendum: actually, I think it is n'gawa. Edited by: ValentineXavier on May 8, 2011 12:38 AM
  11. > {quote:title=willbefree25 wrote:}{quote} > It's an okay channel, ruylopez. > > Too bad you just discovered it. TCM was *great* a long time ago. I've been watching TCM since it began, and it has never been better. It is more polished, and has even greater variety than when it began.
  12. Ralph Meeker, definitely. *Kiss Me Deadly* is a great film. I like his tough but sensitive persona. Mickey Spillane does very well for a non-actor. He plays Hammer as a thick-headed jerk, but pulls it off well. Keach plays Hammer more like a football coach than a hard-bitten private eye. Didn't care for him much.
  13. JOEL McCREA! JOEL McCREA! nothin' special, he's just okay... just kidding... I like him well enough.
  14. *My Dinner with Andre the Giant* Wallace Shawn revisits his 1981 classic, but with a different Andre. Adding extra excitement to their discussions about life, and everything, they wrestle between courses. Andre beats Wallace, three falls to two.

"might as well be French . . . "? I understand that you're arguing against stereotyping, but this makes no sense. OF COURSE THEY'RE EUROPEANS. > Yes, of course they are Europeans. My point was that there are a lot of Spaniards you could put in a lineup with many French, and most people couldn't pick out which nationality is which, just by looking. Is that not so? Sorry if my wording was unartful. Of course Mexico is not Spain, and probably most Mexicans are either of mixed blood, or Indian blood. But, there are some that look more European, and not unlike Heston, even if he doesn't fit the US stereotype of what a Mexican looks like.
  16. TCM isn't showing commercials, except the odd one here and there, for their own products. If they start showing regular commercials, like commercial channels, like AMC, that will raise my red flag.
  17. Bob, Bob, bo Bob, Banana-fanara fo fob Fe fie mo mob Bob! Happy Birthday, *Bob!*
  18. > {quote:title=MovieMadness wrote:}{quote} > Didn't Bing Crosby do some rap on the Road to Zanzibar? Yeah, but it was a bad rap, so he beat it. I don't think a tinfoil hat is enough. I think I'll have to start wearing a lead foil hat, to deflect some of the incredibullsh*t around here. I guess there's a chicken little born every day. Or, two, or three, or...

He smiles a lot and he looks just like Leonard Maltin. For months I thought it was Leonard Maltin. I figured he did movie reviews and political commentary. > Scheuer was a CIA man for 22 years, focusing on Bin Laden at the end of his CIA career, He is now a Professor at Georgetown University. His political opinions are all over the map, but mostly against whoever is in office. That's probably why he had to leave the CIA. I called him a spook, because that is a slang term for a CIA spy.
  20. The one on the left is a spook.
  21. It might help if you named the movie you were talking about.
  22. *This Gub For Hire* Woody Allen's comic remake of the Allan Ladd Veronica Lake classic.
  23. I like it, too. A minor noir, to be sure, but certainly entertaining. I wish TCM would show *This Gun For Hire*. I haven't seen it in a long time.
  24. > {quote:title=incredibull wrote:}{quote} > I think that his name is Ted Turner. > > > incredibull Another example of the goofy things you say, that make you not-credibull.
  25. Well, to be serious, Alexander Siddig. He was on Star Trek Deep Space Nine, playing Dr. Bashir. But, he is now a film actor, and had a good role in *Syriana*. I think he'd be good in the role.
