How do you feel about cross genre films?
ValentineXavier replied to infinite1's topic in General Discussions
*Brotherhood of the Wolf* is one of my favorite "cross genre" films. It is part monster movie, part murder mystery, part political intrigue, part martial arts film, based on real events, and all historical costume drama/period piece. If there are any films that combine more genres than that, I don't believe I know of them. -

> {quote:title=Swithin wrote:}{quote} > Yes, "The Cook..." was a bit of a bore. But I loved Greenaway's *A Zed and Two Noughts" and liked *Drowning by Numbers*. I could never get into his *Draughtsman's Contract*. I never saw a Greenaway film I didn't like. *Prospero's Books* is my favorite. But, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without knowing their tastes well. Probably most people would hate it. And, even those who love it, like me, will likely get a headache from trying to take it all in. -

Kinokima, thanks for transcribing that. I started my recording a minute early, but missed half of that. Great film. I know I'd seen it in the past, but only really remembered the ending.. Clute is obviously very knowledgeable, and insightful. I think he could replace Bob O., when the time comes! I liked the scene of Mario's funeral, with the procession of cars with only flowers, no mourners! I wish Cesar had told Tony of his mistake with the ring, instead of letting Tony think they beat it out of him, and he ratted. I wish that Tony and Jo had communicated better, so they lived. Even though they were thieves, I was rooting for them. Interesting that Grutter and his lot were the 'bad guys,' and thieves were the 'good guys.' I don't see how the fence could set a price without actually seeing the merchandise. But, that's a small quibble, for a great film.

TCM Underground has some good films, and some awful films. I'd give *The Boogens* an "A" for awful...

I'm one who is usually offended by excessive violence, and in fact, that element hurts this otherwise fine movie. I'm not offended by excessive violence. I am offended when such brutal, evil violence is depicted as hip, stylish, and fun. But I still can't call *Pulp Fiction* one of the worst films made, even though I don't like it, because it IS well made. > Another thread reminded me of a solid candidate for worst movie of all time. *THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE* and the poor suckers who paid eight dollars to see it! I won't repeat everything I said elsewhere. But this is an unbelievably horrible piece of... > It's not my very favorite Peter Greenaway film (one of my favorite directors,) but it is an excellent film, with a fine cast - Michael Gambon, Helen Mirren, to name two. One of the worst films I have seen is *Anaconda*. The closest thing to something good I can say about the film is that Jon Voight manages to seem more like a real snake than the CGI snake does.

Groovy Flix on TCM Week of Mar 14th!

> {quote:title=FredCDobbs wrote:}{quote} > I never made it through the opening titles. > Too bad. It addressed you directly, by name, twice! It is obviously a low budget film, which you seem to dislike. But, it is well-made, and both referential, and reverential, of classic film. I thought it might induce a bit of cognitive dissonance in you, and I was curious as to how you would resolve it... -
To me, *The Projectionist* was the funniest film on this week. I can't understand how someone could find its exceedingly simple 'plot' hard to follow. *Riffifi* was by far the best film I saw this week, a great film, up there with *The Third Man*. Subtitles don't bother me, but once in a while, I can't catch them all before they change. That's what the 15 second "instant replay" button on the remote is for!

I think kids would be much better off watching ALL of what is on TCM, as compared to most of what is on broadcast TV. A few years ago, I was in hospital for almost two weeks. Their cable channels were limited to what they thought appropriate for children. They had every variety of awful prime-time crap that you can imagine, but *no* TCM. I couldn't disagree more with their choices.

So, Fred, I gotta know, did you see *The Projectionist* ? If so, what did you think of it? Of course I'd love to hear what others think of it, too. I'll post my opinion, when and if others reply. -

Such usage of employees in ads for local business has been common for years. Just had to gild the lily on your response...

I am a Stone fan. *NBK* was certainly over-the-top, as it was intended to be. It's hard to outdo the media in that regard. It worked for me, sorry it didn't work for you, even though you got the point. From the specific criticisms of many. it's evident that many did not get the point. They accuse the film of supporting exactly what it is decrying. In *Satyricon*, I believe Fellini was trying to make a film as decadent as Rome, and succeeded. But, it's not my favorite Fellini. That would be *Juliet of the Spirits*, a truly magical film. Edited by: ValentineXavier on Mar 15, 2011 11:06 PM -
Problems with the Upgrade
ValentineXavier replied to lzcutter's topic in PROBLEMS with the Message Boards
I have encountered a new problem, one that did not exist yesterday. When viewing the forum list, I don't always get the red pin when there is new content. When I click on a thread list, I do see the appropriate red and yellow pins. But, for some threads on the list, even if there is a yellow pin for new content (and there is new content,) the thread list behaves as if that particular thread has no new content, and a "mark all threads read" button is not shown. Of course, these are minor problems, and I'm sure we'd all prefer that the schedules be fixed first! -

> {quote:title=filmlover wrote:}{quote} > I can only think of three films I have ever walked out on: > > Nashville > Natural Born Killers > Fellini's Satyricon Three of my favorite films! I suspect that many who dislike the oft-reviled *Natural Born Killers* don't understand that it was meant to be an indictment of the media, for giving exposure to, and aggrandizing such people. As such, I think it works very well. It seems to me that many think its intent is to do exactly the kind of thing it is criticizing, lampooning, and taking to its logical extreme. I tend not to go to movies of the sort I would walk out of. Recently, I went to see *The Green Hornet*. If I can sit through that crap, I can sit through anything!
