A foley artist creates sound effects.

Fred, as someone who has studied biology, anthropology, and of course, evolution, the only part of the text you posted that is not true, racist, and offensive, it the last paragraph, Races of Man. The rest of it remains true, but today, texts would include citations of the various ancestral hominids, from australopithicines to **** habilis, that lead to **** sapiens. And, clearly, a human more closely physically resembles a chimpanzee, bonobo, or gorilla, than they resemble a monkey. That seems obvious. We have gone far beyond the text you posted, so of course we wouldn't use it today. But, apart from the last paragraph, it remains true. Much as I'd like to think they would have banned the racist part, back in those days, I doubt it. Edited by: ValentineXavier on Feb 26, 2011 4:13 PM

Joan of Arc shortened version
ValentineXavier replied to MovieMadness's topic in General Discussions
Just in case, program your DVR to run long enough to record the entire, uncut film. More than once an edited version has been listed, but a full length version shown. -
A gaffer is a stage electrician. Do you know what a foley artist is?

The worst film I can remember seeing in a theater is the recent *Green Hornet*. Worst fill I've ever seen, tossup between *Battlefield Earth* and Clint Eastwood's *The Gauntlet*. *CSA* is a very off-putting film, but it is not a racist film. It is absurdist satire, used to expose racism. Spike Lee is one of my favorite directors. I saw his first film, *She's Gotta Have It* in the theater, and it is quite a good film. *Malcolm X* and *Do the Right Thing* are powerful and important films, his best. *Four Little Girls* is also excellent, and important. His documentary about Katrina, *When the Levees Broke* is stunning. Films like *Inside Man*, and *Miracle at St. Anna* are good entertainment that most people would be surprised to find out were Spike Lee films, if they saw them without knowing.

I need info on The Movie "Giant" 1956
ValentineXavier replied to BuccaneerMoe's topic in General Discussions
This can be a real problem. Film timings may, and may not, include time for the overture, and the overture may or may not be included in the film. Same goes for intermission and exit music. *2001* is a good case in point. It is around in several lengths, depending on if the music is cut. TCM might not even know which cut of a film they are getting. More than once I have seen the listed running time change before broadcast, or even change at the broadcast time, without previous warning in the listings. Also, cable on-screen guides aren't always updated to match TCM's listings changes. The best thing you can do is to go to the IMDb. Check running times, and check alternate versions. Program your DVR to run long enough to capture the longest version listed, plus a few minutes at the beginning, and end, of the listed running time. That's about all you can do. -

Not quite sure whether to feel neglected, or triumphant, about the fact that you didn't also fisk my reply to you. I think I'll go with triumphant...

Steve was the name of one of Walter Brennan's dead bees.

It had a laser disc release in Japan years back and those seem to be the source material for most of the bootleg copies that are out there, but I'm not going to get into that. I think it was on the AVS forum where someone said that it is available in the UK. You might try searching AmazonUK.

Yep, it's a classic, and I like it. Sorry you had to see it for the first time on the IFC, with all those commercials! -

Actually, I expected a lot of people wouldn't get it, not knowing that the Who used to demolish their instruments. -
I've heard that it is available on Region 2 DVD.

I live in Ann Arbor, and used to watch CBC movies all the time. That's the first place I ever saw a Guy Maddin film, and where I saw *This Place Called Chiapas*. I haven't really watched them for years, but I'm sorry to hear about dropping the movies.

No need for embarrassment. You're hardly the first to not pick up on what I thought was an obvious implication of one of my cryptic statements. -

I certainly don't want to pay for it, and I have to pay extra every month for TCM. > > Please TCM, do not be sullied by a George Clooney movie:) You need to learn to read more carefully. I did NOT call for TCM to show *Three Kings*, or a George CLOONEY movie" as you phrase it. I specifically recommended the film to FredCDobbs, because of the parallels I see with *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre*. That said, I would have no problem with TCM showing it, or any of the other excellent films George Clooney has starred in, in the proper context. Fortunately, I am not burdened with your extreme biases. Also fortunately, TCM does not program to anyone's biases, including yours.

Well, I'm not a Weatherman, but I did attend an SDS meeting once... The film doesn't make me feel racist, and I don't think it is supposed to. It is an honest look at black and white relations. It is a bit of a play, as you have noted. To me, it shows how human people are, and that we all have reasons for behaving the way we do, and right and wrong just aren't clear, or a quality owned by one side, or the other. I think it is one of Spike's best, along with *Malcolm X*. I can understand why people would find the film discouraging. It doesn't really offer any answers. I think it was just trying to create understanding of all perspectives. Personally, I sympathized with many of the characters, even if I didn't really identify with them that much. -

> {quote:title=misswonderly wrote:}{quote} > ValentineX wrote about *Blow Up:* > > {quote:title=ValentineXavier wrote:}{quote} > > And the Yardbirds imitating The Who. > > Valentine, baby, the Yardbirds did not imitate the Who. Well, I like both bands, and I didn't mean "imitate" musically. What the YB's do imitate is the way The Who destroyed their instruments as part of the performance. I've heard that Antonioni saw The Who doing that, and asked the YBs to do it. But, I don't believe that instrument destruction was a normal thing for the YBs. I wouldn't call it "imitation," but Hendrix did pick up using feedback from The Who.
