TV channels don't rate their own films. The descriptions, and the star ratings, are provided by different program guide services. Some cable providers use one service, some another. So, the same film might have different ratings on Comcast, and Time-Warner, and the descriptions will vary as well. You certainly aren't the only one who doesn't always agree with the ratings. I bought Leonard Maltin's movie guides for years. I thought some of his ratings spot-on, and some absurd. You might find it helpful to look up film titles on www.imdb.com, the Internet Movie Data base, which has descriptions, user comments, and a 1 - 10 star rating system, based on viewer's votes. Another site, www.allmovie.com, has more professional reviews of films, descriptions, and a 1 - 4 star rating system. I often check both to decide if I want to record a film. Of course they both list the directors and the cast, which also enters into my considerations.

question to americans from a canuck
ValentineXavier replied to annelovestcm's topic in General Discussions
If I were her, I'd reply to the Customs that she would not contest the seizure, but would not agree to the destruction of the egg, because it is food, and people are starving around the world. So, she should demand that they send it to a country with starving people, that allows the eggs. Or, tell them that they could eat it themselves... assuming that they are adults, which is a fact not in evidence. -
Thank You. Hmmm... *Dark Star* would be a good candidate for TCM Underground...

?Missing?, Sat. 1/15, a chilling movie...
ValentineXavier replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
Fred, if you liked *Missing*, you really should see Costa-Gavras' earlier film, *Z*. I think it is even more exciting. As to the political aspects of Chile at the time of *Missing*, I would point out that until the CIA, ITT, and Anaconda Copper conspired to oust Allende, Chile was the only country in South America that had NEVER had a dictator, only democratically elected governments. Allende, although a communist college econ professor, was elected, and could just as easily been voted out of office. But, the US felt it must install the dictator Pinochet, to teach Latin America a lesson. -
I set my DVD recorder to record all of the shorts to its hard drive, in 3 - 6 hour blocks, and one 2.5 hour block. I covered over the face of my cable box, so I don't accidentally change the channel. If nothing goes wacky, I'll have all 40 L&H shorts in chronological order, on 8 DVDs. *Beau Hunks* is my favorite.

I see John Wayne in a wig, with long, curly locks... I'm not going any further than that.

TCM programmers are slackers
ValentineXavier replied to The_Destroyer's topic in General Discussions
Okay, I'm getting so sick and tired of your fixation on *Hot Spell* that I hereby publicly request that TCM *NEVER* show it again. Further, I vow that if they do, I will not watch it, nor anything else on that day. And, I hope that others who feel the same way will take this opportunity to publicly make the same pledge, right here in this thread. And, in any other *Hot Spell* threads that you start. -
The Ghost of Sierra de Cobre (a.k.a. The Haunting)
ValentineXavier replied to AlBrenes's topic in Horror
I've never seen it, but I'd check it out, given the chance. I looked it up, and see it was made for TV, and directed by Joseph Stephano, director of 12 eps of the classic Outer Limits. -

How do they compare to, say, Hershey's? Or Cadbury's? > > The quality of chocolate bon bons is a serious matter, ... Now, this is what makes me doubt that MM meant the chocolates. Whitman's, the lowest grade of bon bons, were, and are, crap. Even Russell Stover's, a commercial competitor, were, and are, much better. I'm sure MM could afford MUCH better chocolates, and would have had access to them in Hollywood, and in fact, bought them. Oddly enough, Stover's eventually bought out Whitman's, but Stover's are still better.

Kyle, I just checked the wikipedia, and Merriam-Websters. Both describe "mush" as cornmeal boiled in water, or milk. I'd prefer the polenta you describe...

Thanks. Glad you like spoonerisms...

*Grew ***** The Duke plays an old lawman who wants to retire, but he is afraid all his old enemies will hunt him down. So, the perfect disguise, he gets a sex change operation!

If it was remade, we'd probably get to see ants devouring people, cutting them in half with their pincers... ummm

Sad to say, if AMC is showing it, then they probably have the rights tied up. So, it may be a while before it shows up on TCM again.

Well, my humor is so obvious that sometimes people don't see it...

IS ANYONE GONNA' GO TO "TRUE GRIT?"
ValentineXavier replied to spencerl964's topic in General Discussions
Fred, you're spot on about Kim Darby. She played Miri, in a classic Star Trek ep, back then. -
Well, we fried leftover cornmeal mush in Oklahoma, too. But, I preferred hushpuppies, also called hot water cornbread, because they are just made of boiled cornmeal, a little salt, cooled, then shaped by hand, and fried.

Yes, that would be a metaphysical explanation. Could she perhaps 'dream' the rest of her life, as she is dying? Could she have entered an alternate reality, where she lived, but is still in contact with the reality where she died, and being called back to it? These are all possible explanations for this film, and the other two films I mention, but they aren't really rationally possible in the real world. One of these explanations may be what the filmmaker meant. I still just see it as an enigma, without a definitive solution. Edited by: ValentineXavier on Jan 9, 2011 9:21 PM

Well, I'm from Oklahoma. There, "mush" means corn meal mush. It's not really the same as grits, aka "hominy grits,"which are a coarser grind, and I believe, treated with lye. Mush is usually made from white corn meal, which is traditionally more finely ground than yellow corn meal. It is still that way, if you buy the brand in the round cardboard container with the Quaker Oats guy on it. If you're buying natural, organic, gourmet cornmeal, who knows how coarse the grind? But, in my family at least, real, honest-to-goodness cornbread, made w/o wheat flour, or sugar, it is made with white corn meal, because it is the finer grind. And so, polenta is a fancy version of cornmeal mush. Much tastier, of course, than the plain stuff.
