And should be to all fans of classic movies. Call me ignorant then. I am definitely a L&H fan, and even thought about him, when posting about *Them Thar Hills*, but didn't know his name, so I didn't post about him. -
Seldom seen RKO films on TCM

> {quote:title=MyFavoriteFilms wrote:}{quote} > What does bother me is when I take the effort to read something and it is erroneous...complete waste of time. I've long suspected you were related to NOMAD. I don't particularly care for long posts, but they would be a lot easier to deal with, if this website wasn't so primitive that one encounters them from the bottom, up. -
Why does ?The Thing? go from 35mm to 16mm ??

> {quote:title=FredCDobbs wrote:}{quote} > Mankiewicz makes stuff up. If he needs some history or background about a film, he just manufactures it, Fred, he is hardly the first person to hypothesize that 'the flying saucer scare' was just a reaction to the supposed 'Red menace,' just as the Japanese monster films were inspired by the fear of nuclear bombs/war. Of course the commies didn't have flying saucers, but we didn't know that for sure, we were paranoid about what they might have, or be up to. Now, you don't have to agree with this analysis of culture and history, but don't accuse Ben of making it up, because he didn't, others did, long before he mentioned it. -
Too Much Mickey Rooney, Silents and Foreign language

> {quote:title=FredCDobbs wrote:}{quote} > > {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > > If Rooney in QUICKSAND needed to raise some money, he should have gotten some buddies together and put on a show. > > LOL! Thats a good point. The Rooney of *Killer McCoy* could have done it with a few quick games of pool. I don't call myself a Mickey Rooney fan. I don't care for the Andy Hardy series. But, Mickey Rooney has made some damn fine movies, like *The Strip*, *Quicksand*, *Killer McCoy*, and a number of others. I'm glad TCM is showing them. If he was in a silent foreign language film, I'd watch that too. -
Movies I'd like to see on TCM, but have little hope.

I'd always heard it referred to as "The Bicycle Thief," so I did a bit of quick checking, on IMDb, Allmovie, and the wikipedia. The literal translation of the Italian title is 'thieves of bicycles.' The film was originally released as *The Bicycle Thief* in the US. In the UK, and recently in the US with the Criterion edition, the title translation was corrected to *Bicycle Thieves*. But, some people prefer the original English title. I think I do too, but clearly, either is correct, since one was in use for many years, and the other is the correct translation. -

I'd really like to see the classic noir *Christmas Holiday*, the restored version of Ken Russell's *The Devils*, and some Jodorowsky films, like *El Topo*, *The Holy Mountain*, and *Santa Sangre*. Russell and Jodorowsky would be a good fit for TCM Underground. -

> {quote:title=traceyk65 wrote:}{quote} > That's a good list. I'd also like to see some of Jean Gabin's french films besides Quai des Brumes , Le Jour se Leve and Grand Illusion. Don't get me wrong, I like those films, but I'd like to see Pepe le Moko and maybe a few of his later films, like Le Chat or Touchez pas au Grisbi (love that title!) AND, I'm still waiting for someone to put out a version of Martin Roumagnac with subtitles...and not the chopped-up version shown in the States under the title The Room Upstairs. > > Oh and since for some reason Ive never seen it, Id like to see The Bicycle Thieves as well, but I have no idea if that's been played on TCM before. Maybe a monthly theme on French/European film? New wave? Is that the term I want? The ones that came out in the 50's and were shown in Art Houses and so on? *Quay des Brumes*, aka *Port of Shadows*, *Le Jour se Leve*, aka *Daybreak*, and *The Bicycle Thief* have all been on TCM, I think within the last year. Perhaps you missed them, because they used the English titles. I think *Pepe le Moko* and *Grand Illusion* were shown as well. I'm sure *Moontide* was shown. The sequel is called Several Species of Small Furry Criminals, Gathered Together in a Bar, and Grooving With a Dick.

Thanks, guys! I guess TCM couldn't get it. The IMDb lists it as being released on Dec. 10th, 2010!

Help yourself.

Medak has made a few great movies. *The Ruling Class*, with Peter O'Toole, is one of my favorites. *The Krays* and *Romeo Is Bleeding* are also quite good. Perhaps he doesn't get the credit yhe deserves because he has done so much TV.

Portrayals of drunks on screen

Well, I work on a college campus. I would say that a much higher level of alcohol consumption is socially acceptable among many of the kids here, than you will ever see in 30s films. -
About a week or so ago, I saw a film on the Dec. schedule that is no longer there. It was scheduled for 2am, Saturday Dec. 11th, aka Friday night. It was letterboxed, and the title began with "The Wonderful World of," but I can't remember the rest. Now, *Santa Claus* is scheduled in that slot, but previously, it followed the dropped film. Does anyone know the full title of the dropped film?

Yeah, that's a good one, directed by Fritz Lang. I forgot about it.

W. C. Fields usually played a lush. In *Them Thar Hills*, Stan, Ollie, and Mae Busch get uproariously tipsy from drinking "water" from a well where moonshiners dumped their whiskey. -

-
He was NOT a killer in *The Ox-bow Incident*. He and his buddy vote NOT to hang the suspects, and Fonda tries to stop the hanging, but is overpowered. Later, he takes Dana Andrews' letter to his wife. The posse started out legal, with approval from a judge. Fonda tries to keep it legal, but fails.
-
Well, in *Young Tom Edison*, he does work on the railroad, but I don't recall if the song was in the film.

Moguls and Movie Stars debunking John Wayne
ValentineXavier replied to DONQSONOFZORRO's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Since I dislike John Wayne, I am eminently qualified to render an opinion on which are his best films... They are: *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* *Red River* *The Searchers* *Legend of the Lost* *Reap the Wild Wind* *The Big Trail*
