  1. Back when T-Zone was still on the air as a first run show, there was a story that they filmed an ep about a small southern town that was so racist that the townspeople turned into pigs, but it was decided not to show this ep. If it still exists, I'd love to see that ep.

  2. I just happened across the wikipedia article on Film Noir. It is informative and engaging. I recommend that noir fans check it out. It has lots of interesting information. One thing I learned is that the term "film noir" was coined in France in 1946, not by Francois Truffaut in the 50s, as I had read several other places.

  3. *Randolph, the Rude-Nosed Reindeer*

Everyone knows the story of Rudolph, but this is the story of his son, Randolph. Randolph was quite a cut-up. One of his favorite things was goosing people, and other reindeer, with his nose. Perhaps he was trying to show it off, even if it didn't glow like dad's.

Rudolph was getting a bit long in the antler, and needed extra urging from Santa to lift off from the rooftops. Santa wanted to replace him with son Randolph, but he was just too undisciplined, too much the joker. Then, Santa had a bright idea. He hitched Randolph up right behind Rudolph. Randolph's constant goosing was just the urging Rudolph needed, and with each goose, his nose glowed a little redder!

I think *The Searchers* and *Rio Grande* are the best two films. So, by all means, see *Rio Grande*, since you haven't seen it. For the other one, I'd say *Fort Apache*, even though I think it would have been a better film, if Fonda and Wayne had switched roles. SWAYR is too sentimental, and formulaic, to me, anyway.

Listen? Well, they did reply to my e-mail, saying that the commercials were necessary, so that they could afford to make new programming 'in the independent spirit.' So, I guess they "listened." Will they change their new ways? Almost certainly NOT, unless they start losing money. Bravo and AMC went this way, and they're still around, so I guess what the IFC was is gone for good. Unless The Z Channel comes to cable... :)

Oh, come on now! Everyone knows that most Klingons are Canadian... or is that most Canadians are Klingons? I forget... :)

Doubtless, that accounts for lots of things not being in true HD, but there are a number of things TCM shows which are available in HD. So, how come they aren't showing those in HD? *North by Northwest* is a good example. I've posed this question here before, and no one seems to have an answer.

If that's the case, your TV may need some adjustment. With HD, you should get a sharper picture, and truer colors, but the picture shouldn't look "cooked."

Once upon a time, the phone company charged extra if you used a "touch tone" phone, instead of a dial phone. I think that eventually, there won't be extra HD charges, that will just be the norm. But, it's gonna take a few years!

  9. I'd just second what phroso said. I've seen *Big Deal on Madonna Street*, also *Lady Liberty*, and *Bocaccio 70*, which he did a segment in. I'd bet that few of his films made it to the US, or Canada, so that's why we're not really familiar with him.

Oh, it's Mario, not "Maio," but I bet you knew that.

  10. There are already several threads discussing this, although they haven't been active lately.

TCMHD channel exists, but not all cable systems, or satellite systems, carry it yet.

It isn't really HD yet, and they don't advertise that it is.

They upconvert SD, but usually, when they show a widescreen film, it is zoomed to fill the screen, so you should get close to the picture quality of an anamorphic DVD, which is better than SD.

When will they really have HD? I don't think they have announced a date, but the hints are that it will be phased in over the next couple of years, as HD transfers become available.

  11. Of the performances I am familiar with, which is most, I agree. My own pick for the most overlooked performance would be Joseph Calleia as Sgt. Pete Menzies, Orson Welles' (Capt. Quinlan) right hand man in *Touch of Evil*. He steals scenes from Welles and Heston, most remarkable! I think it is easily the equal of any on TCM's list.

  12. When they edit down programs, they are just throwing away content that they paid good money for. I think it would make more sense to bundle shows. Show three old half-hour shows in a two hour timeslot, unedited. Show two hour programs in a 2.5 hour timeslot. I'm a fan of the old Perry Mason series, but that was made unwatchable by editing. There are even a couple where you never see the character who did it, until Perry reveals them in court. All of their previous screen time had been cut out. How the heck are you supposed to figure out who did it that way?
