  1. Did you ever see *Eversmile New Jersey* with Daniel day Lewis? he is quite good at light comedy, with a satiric edge. Clive Owen does tend to play darker parts, but I think he could well be very versatile, given the chance. He certainly wouldn't have any trouble handling the "urbane" part. "Witty" begins with the script. Could he deliver it right? I think he could.

Fred, World Import is a reputable place. For international models, and for units that require hardware modifications to be region-free, they are definitely a source to consider. For some of those cheaper Philips and JVC units, probably all they did was enter a code with the supplied remote, to make them region-free. It might well be cheaper to buy the unit elsewhere, look up the region hack on www.videohelp.com, and hack it yourself.

Another reputable source for high-end, hardware-modified equipment is www.jvbdigital.com

Often, they will sell you the mod kit, if you want to install it yourself, and save money.

    > Good one, Valentine. 3 Movie titles for the price of one. Maybe it's about time we hired an accountant to set up our new movie idea business $$$

    Thank you, thank you!

12 Angry Men in Black Narcissus, and its sequel, were also three titles in one. I was thinking it might be fun to have a thread, or maybe do it here, where we see how many film titles we can string together. It could get quite long!

Indeed. I was always trying to twirl a rope! I read his bio, or perhaps autobio? back when I was a kid. He was really amazing, more than people remember these days.

    >

A bit of an irony for me... I can never quite appreciate this film, or any other about the Earps, because of my childhood in Oklahoma. My great grandpa drilled into me that the Earps were the bad guys, not the good guys. One of their descendants, Ancel Earp, IIRC, lived in OKC, and there were billboards with his name on them around town. What for, I don't recall. But every time we would pass one, he would go on a tear about the Earps. I kinda idolized him, so the bias stuck. I haven't really researched it, but I have occasionally read things that did portray the Earps as bad guys.

I'm definitely not in that camp. I think Juliet is his best, most fully realized surrealist cinematic portrait. Starring, of course, his wife. I also think 1980's *City of Women* is an excellent, under appreciated film.

Truly lots of great foreign cinema in the 60s, including Costa-Gavras' stunning *Z*, released in 1969.

  7. Were they eventually found out, when ice cream was found on the crutch?

*Gone With The Wind and the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe*

Scarlett is so despondent after being rejected by Rhett that she journeys to Morocco. There, she is abducted and wooed by sheik Sean Connery. But, she still longs for Tara. One day, in the depths of the Palace, she finds an old wardrobe. She opens it, while thinking of Tara. She steps in, and is transported to Tara as it was before the war, but all the people are now animals.

But, let me ask you, IF they were to make the Thin Man today, or Philo Vance Mysteries who in today's gaggle of actors could play either character with the wit and sophistication as our boy Bill. The only person I could think of was George Clooney. Can you think of anyone?

Clive Owen, and Daniel Day Lewis.

You are the only one here arguing for the burning or banning of films. You are no longer willing to state your position, or explain or elaborate on it. You accuse those who argue against your position of "intolerance," when what they are arguing against your intolerance of certain films, which you won't specify. This makes any rational debate on the issue impossible. I see no point in continuing.

Or hide much else, either. If they found an actress that she thinks looks as good as she did, she might not squawk so much.

True, that's what Dr. Brulov thought might be possible, and they were approaching it from that angle, but Ingrid didn't really buy it. Still, I consider amnesia to be a "mental illness," which I would define broadly, and he is being treated for it.

Another time, after running KENTUCKY, he said something akin to "Walter Brennan won an Academy Award for THAT!?!" It was very funny.

Just before that gig, Dave Dixon was a top DJ on Detroit's hippest rock and roll station of the era, WABX. He was indeed *very* opinionated. He would chew someone out for requesting a song, and/or asking for a dedication, and be especially vociferous about it if it was a song he didn't like. He was eventually fired, but I'm sure most of us missed him.

  13. Yeah, I'm disappointed that way all the time, but usually on SD movie channels other than TCM. I most always turn the thing off, in disgust. They start widescreen, so that you can see all the titles, but it sure seems like bait-and-switch to me. I'd bet that TCM was surprised, or a true WS print was unavailable.

*The Fifth Element* is worth watching for Chris Tucker's performance alone. It's stunning, hard to believe he could keep up that rapid-fire monologue.

  15. Well, I realize that being insane, as in mental illness in its extreme form, is not the same as mentally handicapped, or '****,' which I think is often due to overt physical reasons. But, is it still considered an illness? I don't know, I'm not a doctor. At any rate, I didn't mean to offend anyone, especially not the "bull goose loonies." ;) (a line from One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.)
