Stray Dog is one of my favorite Kurosawa films. I love film noir, and it is a classic noir. Ikiru is another non-samurai favorite, as is Dersu Uzala, which went unmentioned.

Having trouble recording to dvd.
ValentineXavier replied to cteddiesgirl's topic in General Discussions
Just to show the odd things that can show up in cable signals - Years back, before AMC went commercial, for a few weeks there was an extremely low frequency hum on AMC, coming from the right channel. This was so low that even most decent hifi systems would not reproduce it. But, my system has no low-pass filter, since I have Vandersteen speakers, that reproduce down below the audible range, and I like it that way. Well, there was a surge in that very low drone, and it blew my right channel main amp! -

If she did say, it's either in this thread or the Holmes thread in Hot Topics. Yeah, I was thinking she was on U-verse. So, it seems that some, but not all, people on some, but not all, services have/had the problem. Kind of a tough nut to crack... But, I don't think it is by any means definite that the origin of the problem is with TCM. Or, if it is with TCM, perhaps something in their signal is being interpreted by some providers' equipment as copy protection, but isn't interpreted as such by others. -

Some people on the AVS Forum, with DirecTV, say they had/have no problem. This seems an odd problem, indeed. Probably take a team of TV engineers, and some surveys, to figure it out. -

Universal Announces "The Thing" Prequel

The 1982 film had three railroad tank car loads of gelatinous slime, and the 1951 film had James Arness playing a giant carrot. I'll go with the giant carrot. -
If so, I must have seen it somewhere else on the cable dial. Perhaps FMC? Who knows.

FGtC is a fine film, and gets shown pretty regularly. I think TCM is where I've seen it before. Are you sure it's a premiere? Great title! Edited by: ValentineXavier on Jan 3, 2010 3:54 PM

The films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger

> {quote:title=JonnyGeetar wrote:}{quote} > In comparison to Psycho or even Homocidal it just doesn't hold up. Well, I disagree. I think Peeping Tom is Powell's best film, and to quote Allmovie.com, "a more daring and audacious film than (Psycho.)" The fetishism, the parallels and allusions, to various aspects of the film biz, the fact that "Tom" is as much a victim as his victims, are all way ahead of their time. I find Peeping Tom much more gripping, and believable, than Psycho, which I also like a lot. For its day, the style is beyond bizarre, yet it seems like part of the real world. Psycho, for all its greatness, the zillion quick cuts of the shower scene, etc., seems like a story, whereas Peeping Tom seems like it is really happening. -

I posted about this problem on the Audio Video Science Forum, and have gotten a few replies. No one has had such problems, but no one with U-verse has responded yet. -
Good list, but they left off my favorite, Dead Man, with Johnny Depp and Robert Mitchum.

It's available, but obviously the think we are too "rural" an area to appreciate the offerings of TCM. I would appreciate it more than some of the C**P they offer in our local lineup. Who do we have to beg to in order that TCM is added? It's really strange that you don't have TCM, since Comcast has it everywhere they operate in my state. I doubt that it has anything to do with you being "rural." The only reason I can think of is if they don't have enough bandwidth on your local system.

> {quote:title=lzcutter wrote:}{quote} > OK, > > ValentineXavier wants to help try to figure out what is going on. In one of the various Holmes' threads she asks people *HAVING* problems recording movies from TCM since Saturday: > > 1) What cable satellite provider are you using? > > 2) How are you recording- to your DVR or Tivo or to a DVD-Recorder or a computer or VHS machine? > > Not everyone is having a problem so it's not coming from TCM. But with more info from those having problems, perhaps the more savvy tech types will be able to help. No offense, Liz, but I'm a he. My handle is Brando's name in The Fugitive Kind, my favorite Brando movie. A few facts: One should never have trouble recording to their DVR, even if there is copy protection on a certain channel, or broadcast. The anti-copy signal is inserted at the head end of the cable, or satellite service. It does not come from a copy-protected DVD played by the cable channel, nor does it originate with a cable channel, although they may request that the cable or satellite service insert it. At least, that's what I have read on the Audio Video Science Forum. If you swear you are a cable or satellite engineer, and tell me I'm wrong, then I'll believe you... Anti-copy signal IS transmitted over analog outputs, like the S-Video, and composite outputs used to run to a DVDR (DVD recorder.) VCRs often don't detect the modern anti-copy signals from cable/satellite. Most, if not all DVDRs will detect legitimate anti-copy signals. My 2006 Pioneer 640 does, when there is one present. I have Comcast, and have never had any trouble recording anything from TCM, including the entire Rathbone/Bruce series. Just watched The Scarlet Claw again. Some DVDRs, Sony is notorious for this, see anti-copy signals where there aren't any, quite frequently, others only once in a while. The upshot is that TCM likely has NOTHING to do with this problem, it was probably a problem with your satellite/cable provider. Some if you could NOT record, please state your cable/satellite provider, and the extent of the problem - just certain films, all of TCM, etc. So far, I think only UVerse subscribers have said they couldn't record it, on a DVDR. There are several iterations of UVerse. Some are still on phone lines, some have fiber optics, IIRC. So, if you have UVerse, what sort of connection? I am certainly not an expert on the subject, but I spend a lot of time on the Audio Video Science Forum, and the Satellite/Cable tech people who post there say that the copy protection signal must be transmitted by the Sat./Cable provider, and sometimes they do so in error. Perhaps this is what happened with TCM and The Scarlet Claw. It can't hurt to complain to your provider about this. Perhaps they will correct the problem. The fact that many of us had no problems recording from TCM shows that it is NOT TCM doing it. -

> {quote:title=cteddiesgirl wrote:}{quote} > I'm with AT&T Uverse. Like I said, I've been recording for months, including just a couple days ago. I recorded Christmas in July and Chicken Every Sunday which were both shown Christmas Eve with no problems. I haven't even changed to a new pack of discs. > I've tried recording from the DVR and recording live while the program is being shown. It's just all of a sudden that I can no longer record anything from TCM. It sounds like Uverse has added copy protection. You could try calling them and asking about it, to see if it was deliberate. Of course most CSRs will be totally ignorant of this. If your DVDRs will record to DVD Ram discs, sometimes those are able to record copy protected programs. Also, there are filters available that remove copy protection, and will let you record. I have Comcast cable, and no recording problem on TCM, or anything else. I can even record OnDemand programs. -

I'm a fan of the film, at least in part because I love flashbacks. There is at least one film, whose name escapes me at the moment, that has several more layers of flashbacks!

Fargo took place during the winter. If Help qualifies as a thriller, there is a winter scene in it, and of course On Her Majesty's Secret Service had a great winter chase scene, as do a couple of other Bond films. I think there are a number of thrillers about WWII which include winter scenes. I'll let others name those, if they wish to.
