That doesn't make a lick of sense to me. On my HDTV, a 4x3 image has exactly the same size on the SD channel, as on the HD channel. And, as RazorX wrote, a LB image will fill the screen when viewed on the HD channel, but must be zoomed to fill the screen on the SD channel.

I DVRed the film from TCM SD. It did look overscanned. I enjoyed the film, but it is very unlike other Bunuel films I have seen, and not among my favorites of his. Still, I am glad to have seen it.

  2. Thanks for the link, I've bookmarked it. Indeed, that should be a more accurate resource than the IMDb. But, I would assume that TCM uses it as the source for their TRT listings. Sometimes the TCM TRT listings are wrong. Therefore, we need another source to check against.

When I do find differences between TCM and the IMDb, I will also check check AFI. If I find discrepancies between TCM listings, and AFI listings, that will indeed be informative.

  3. Mark, and Kreiger, you are both quite correct, there is no definitive source for running times. That is, in part, why I mentioned the IMDb, just to let people know what I was going by. I have checked running times between the IMDb, Allmovie (now all Rovi,) and the wikipedia, many times. They most always agree. Of course, any one may be the source for the listing on another.

I, too, have checked DVD release time listings. I have found that even they are often wrong, for their own release. The only source I consider definitive is Criterion, for their DVD releases. Even then, there are often other versions, with other TRTs. My point with this thread is just to alert people as best we can.

No, I know Eye of the Beholder very well. The ep I read about was never shown anywhere. Possibly, Rod wrote the script, but it wasn't shot. I think it was shot, but I read about it in the 60s, or 70s, so I don't remember for certain. Also, it was a whole southern town that turned into pigs, because of their racism, and ran squealing through the streets. That's very different than EotB.

  5. From *The Grapes of Wrath:*

    >*Ma Joad:* How am I gonna know about ya, Tommy? Why they could kill ya and I'd never know. They could hurt ya. How am I gonna know?

    >*Tom Joad:* Well, maybe it's like Casy says. A fellow ain't got a soul of his own, just little piece of a big soul, the one big soul that belongs to everybody, then...

    >*Ma Joad:* Then what, Tom?

    >*Tom Joad:* Then it don't matter. I'll be all around in the dark - I'll be everywhere. Wherever you can look - wherever there's a fight, so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there. I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad. I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know supper's ready, and when the people are eatin' the stuff they raise and livin' in the houses they build - I'll be there, too.

    >*Ma Joad:* I don't understand it, Tom.

    >*Tom Joad:* Me, neither, Ma, but - just somethin' I been thinkin' about.

  6. That's *original aspect ratio*, and *total running time*

My intention with this thread is to have a place to post OAR and TRT discrepancies between what the TCM schedule says, and what other sources, like the IMDb, say. Hopefully, this will help us extend recording times when needed, and record from TCMHD, or SD, depending on the film. I will post time differences of greater than two minutes. I will only be posting for films I am planning on recording, so there will be plenty I don't list. So, please, help us all out, when you notice something - POST IT!

PS - don't forget to allow for intros and outros, during the appropriate hours.

    23 Thursday 6:30am EST

*White Shadows in the South Seas* 85m (TCM) 88m (IMDb)

    24 Friday 1:30pm EST

*In Old Arizona* 99m (TCM), 95m (IMDb)

    25 Saturday 2:30am EST

*Them!* TCM does not show letterboxed, IMDb says it's 1.75:1

    27 Monday 3pm EST

*Boomerang (1947)* listed as letterboxed, but it's 1.37:1.

Record on SD channel, lest top and bottom be cropped on the HD channel

    28 Tuesday 6am EST

*Tristiana* listed as LB, OAR is 1.66:1

98m (TCM), also 95m and 105m cuts (IMDb)

    28 Tuesday 4:30pm EST

*On the Rivera (1951)* listed as letterboxed, but it's 1.37:1.

Record on SD channel, lest top and bottom be cropped on the HD channel

That's all I've got for now.

Are you sure? I think they used his time off to build an android RO to replace him, so he can go on forever... :)

I recall reading, way back when, that there was an ep of T-Zone that was never shown, because of "racial issues," and it had a town of southern racists who all turned into pigs. I wonder if that was the same ep you have heard about. I wonder if it still exists? I'd sure like to see it!

  9. In place of each photo, I'm seeing a little message screen that says:

    >Upgrade to pro today

    >Bandwidth exceeded

    >Photobucket

But, when I click on them, I can see them. Photos in earlier posts display that way too, unless they were posted by someone else.

I don't doubt it. I just meant that I couldn't confirm it to back you up. But, I can confirm that there are many permutations of that expression that are in common usage, so it is easy for someone to make a mistake.

Admit it. It's only the wealthy Canadians who can afford imported fig leaves. The rest of you wear maple leaves. :D
