Not necessarily so. It's easy to put your pants on both legs at once. When you take your pants of at night, plant your bare feet firmly, and flat, on the floor. Undo your belt and unzip. Let your pants drop to the floor. Step out of them, without disturbing them. Next morning, just step in the leg holes, and pull your pants up, both legs at once. That's how I do it. Well, with jeans, anyway. :)

Well, you gave yourself away as a pretender right there. Those of us who have actually lived in 'em call them shotgun houses, and those who haven't, call them shotgun shacks. :)

  3. > {quote:title=jamesjazzguitar wrote:}{quote}My humor must be so bad that you don't get it. Haven't you ever heard the joke about eating Chinese food and being hungry again a few hours later. Thus my comment about shows was a JOKE.

    >As for your Chinese menu idea; that might work but after watching a show would we feel we need to watch it again in a few hours?

Sorry, I was a little slow on the uptake. I took your comment literally, and thought you thought I was talking about paying for cable on a per-show basis, not ala carte.

  4. Coca Cola will make your teeth soft, too. No kidding. If you want to show a child one reason that drinking pop is bad, take one of their baby teeth, when it falls out, and put it in a glass of Coke for a week. Then, take it out, and you can crumble it in your fingers.

  5. You'd need some sensitive equipment to detect any alcohol remaining, after marinating, then cooking. Alcohol boils at a lower temperature than than water - 172F - so what little was retained from marinating would escape during cooking.

To retain much alcohol in a cooked dish, one must have a fair amount to begin with, then cook at a very low, just-below simmer, or roast at a low temperature. A common use of wine, sauteing mushrooms i.e., will eliminate most of the alcohol, but leave the flavor of the wine, assuming one continues cooking for a few minutes after the wine is added.

  6. Burning down some of the many TCM films stored on my two DVRs... :D

Seriously, they are showing lots of good films I like, but I have seen most of them many times. I am looking forward to *Under the Volcano*, and *The Invisible Woman*, and more later, I'm sure.

  7. With my Chinese menu idea, what I mean is that for each tier, you could choose a set number of channels from a list, and that would be what you always got. I didn't mean choose from a list of programs.

Well, if what ESPN/Disney does isn't blackmail, then it's a protection racket. They are saying 'give ESPN to everyone for free, or you can't get anything else from us.' I can't think of any other vendors who can do anything like that. Can GM force us to buy insurance from them, or get a loan from them, in order to buy a car? No, of course not. They don't want to either, but if they could get away with it, surely they would.

I'm afraid that when the weather's that bad in my neighborhood, my electricity goes out, and I can't watch TCM. I wind up reading the newspaper by kerosene lamp light, listening to jazz and blues on the boombox.

Seriously, I share your sentiments. But, I would describe TCM as an oasis amidst deserts and junkyards. :)

  10. > {quote:title=jamesjazzguitar wrote:}{quote}I wonder if you read my entire post. I said that the city contacts with ONE cable company and thus the consumer is locked in. Cities, especially larger ones, have a lot of power when deciding what cable company should service the city. It is during the bidding process and contract negotiation that the city manager needs to do what is best for city residences. But sadly a lot of city managers fail.

    >JJG wrote earlier:

    >So the free market works for the networks but NOT for the cable companies? I only ask because that last paragraph (e.g. the 'should not be allowed' comment in particular), isn't a free market type of comment.

    >

    >Of course as I said before since each city contracts with a single cable company if there are any restrictions these should be negotiated by the city during the bidding process. Sadly city leaders are often weak in this regard (and in some cases being paid off by the cable company).

Perhaps I did not understand your earlier post (I did read it all,) but you seemed to be saying that you thought cable co.s existed in a "free market," even though the second half of your own post contradicted that, more or less. So, I went on to state that I don't think that it IS a "free market," even though we usually have an alternative, or two.

But, I think that "cities contracting with a single cable company," or only allowing a single cable company, is falling by the wayside. I know some cities have more than one now, and some have FIOS too. That was always something cities did to attract a cable provider, promising them no competition. But, slowly, we are seeing a little competition, in a few places.

    >

    > I read your other e-mail about more tiers. I agree that this is more workable than 'pure' ala carte service. Maybe there could be 5 or 6 tiers, that lump together difference networks that connect to similar audiences. The sports tier is a no-brainier but after that what networks to group could a challange. But there are some logical groups; new junkie - CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc..

    >

    > Food and Travel; etc...

Another alternative might be sort of a Chinese menu, with 5 from column A, 10 from column B, etc. I think that the major news channels, the weather channel, and all CSPAN channels should be on the lowest tier, for safety, and to promote citizenship.

About ESPN demanding that it be on all tiers, if you want any other channels from Disney, that's pure blackmail, should be illegal, and the Gov. should do something about it. Then, the idea of making tiers based on the cost per subscriber, would be a very good idea.

  11. There's nothing made with lemon that isn't better made with limes. I think there's a special place in Hell for dummies who make guacamole with lemon, instead of lime. ;):)

Key limes are very good, better than the more common Persian lime, which is big, and looks like a green lemon. There is another alternative - Mexican limes. They are round, like a Key lime, but a little bit bigger. You might find them at an ethnic food store. The place I buy them, a produce place, they are 10 for $1. Tasty and cheap!.
