Enumerating Edelstein?s employers
ValentineXavier replied to PhygLeGuy's topic in General Discussions
> {quote:title=PhygLeGuy wrote:}{quote} > At any rate, for this correspondent, PREHISTORIC WOMEN qualified as a keeper solely on the basis of Mr. Edelstein’s introduction. Much as I enjoyed his intro, for THIS correspondent, there were more than enough hot brunettes in the film to qualify it as a keeper... Oh, and the fact that it's not available on DVD. So glad TCM showed it in WS! -
Flix to Groove Hard To--Week of October 24th!!

I have a confession to make that will probably make Keaton fans hate me, but *What, No Beer?* is my favorite Keaton film. At least it was, when I saw it 20 or 30 years ago. Minor Quibble - the original Godzilla film does NOT have Raymond Burr in it. The 80m 1956 re-release for-the-US version has Burr in it. I wish that someday, TCM would run the longer (96m,) original 1954 Japanese release *Gojira*. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047034/ -

Looking for a movie title of a black and white movie

That film has a great 'dream sequence' done by Salvador Dali. -
Herpes, too, I hear... Of course I stole that joke from Cheech and Chong...

He stole it from him, who stole it . . .

TCM has shown a few made-for-TV movies. I seem to recall that a few years ago, they showed several *The Man From Uncle* TV movies. I always look up aspect ratios of films made after 1953, and sometimes I have found that the movie was made for TV. There is one made-for-TV movie I would really like to see again. It is the 1988 film noir ghost story *Gotham*, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Virginia Madsen. I'd be happy if TCM showed it! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095246/

It does sound intriguing.

The discussion has been very civil, mostly factual, and laced with humor. I realize that this board isn't really for politics, but if the thread continues in the same vein, I see no reason to close it. No one is forced to participate. I am curious to know what, specifically, you have found naive. But, I have no wish to draw you into a conversation in which you have no desire to participate. So, don't feel obligated to reply. Willbefree25, I also try to evaluate new information and opinions, and I can be swayed to change mine. Although I consider myself a liberal, or even a radical, and independent, I generally support Dems. But, there are things Clinton, Obama, and other Dems have done that I disagree with strongly, and even some things done by GOP presidents and Congressmen, that I agree with.

"It's woefully Overrated" says Richard Schickel

BingFan, allow me, a Kurosawa lover, to recommend some of his films that are not costume dramas. They are modern, and you might like them, especially if you are a film noir fan: *Stray Dog* *High and Low* *The Bad Sleep Well* Film Goddess, In *The Grapes of Wrath*, Tom Joad's experiences were commonplace then. His reactions, namely stiff resistance and refusal to accept repression, were exemplary, but not common. Fortunately, they were not unique, either. Many did speak out, and resist. Most people would be overcome by what he experienced. Dislike this fine film if you will. But, if you continue to think it unrealistic, you need to read up on the history of the era. -
The Big Combo--not a fast food deal

> {quote:title=FredCDobbs wrote:}{quote} >. And tell me, why did Conte kill his two bodyguards BEFORE he made his final escape? He obviously needed them right up to the very end." That was a vain attempt to keep you and sprocket man from thinking that the film was predictable. The plot isn't unusual, but the film is intense and atmospheric. I think it's a fine classic noir. Earlier in this thread, I posted (the IMDb was my source) that this 1955 film was meant to be in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Delving a bit deeper, into the IMDb forums, someone cites that the UCLA Film Archive's restored print is in 1.66:1, so that would seem to be the intended aspect ratio. TCM showed it at 1.33:1, so we didn't lose too much. I could not find a DVD with it in 1.66:1. -

Altered States (1980) movie came true?
ValentineXavier replied to hamradio's topic in General Discussions
Yow! I live in Ann Arbor, and didn't realize that we still had them then. Back when *Altered States* was made, they were a fad, and the movie made them more popular, IIRC. I liked the movie, but I was rather upset that the mushroom they chose to use is a deadly poison, unlike the popular mushrooms of the day. -
> {quote:title=MovieProfessor wrote:}{quote}" >Wind Across the Everglades" is one of my all time favorite films of Nick Ray. One of my favorites as well. I don't think I'd seen it since I was a teen, in the 60s. It made quite an impression on me then. I just wish TCM had shown us the wide screen version.

Actually, that is what I was so pointedly NOT saying... I must credit Keith Olbermann, for the "Plan 9 9 9 From Outer Space" line, as he has used it repeatedly. It actually occurred to me before I heard it on his show, though.
-
*Plan 9 9 9 From Outer Space* A space alien manages to pass himself off as a dead senator, by constantly covering the bottom half of his face with his arm. As a senator, he manages to sneak an amendment into an obscure bill that makes it legal for the dead to vote. His goal is to vote aliens into office all over the US, and then, the whole world, by resurrecting the dead. A police inspector from Chicago, with a remarkable resemblance to Tor Johnson, notices that the dead folks he sees voting are a whole 'nother class of dead voters than he is used to. So, he goes undercover as a dead ghoul, exposing the alien plot, and saving the Earth from alien domination.

I hope you don't mean me - I know I type it a lot, but I always try to divide it up, as it should be. One day "alot" may be correct, but it isn't already...

The capital gains tax was reduced to 15% in 2003, not "19%."

The Big Combo--not a fast food deal
ValentineXavier replied to slaytonf's topic in General Discussions
TCM doesn't list *The Big Combo* as letterboxed, but its aspect ratio is 1.85:1, so I am going to record it on both TCM SD and TCM HD. IT's a good film, and rarely shown. -
> {quote:title=MovieMadness wrote:}{quote} >... Not this tax and spend stuff we have been trying for the past three years. > > Obama has lowered taxes quite a bit, so "tax and spend" which has also been used to label other Dems is not accurate. Most of our deficit is sue to 'spend and spend, but cut taxes' that we did under W. > PS Last time I checked this country was so good people were still sneaking in. Anyone unhappy can always sneak out. > I guess you haven't checked lately. Illegal immigration is down, due to a lack of jobs, and lots of Mexicans are sneaking back. And, the disparity of the distribution of wealth has been increasing. From the wikipedia: >In the United States at the end of 2001, 10% of the population owned 71% of the wealth and the top 1% owned 38%. On the other hand, the bottom 40% owned less than 1% of the nation's wealth.[13] According to this 2006 study by the Federal Reserve System, from 1989 to 2004, the distribution in the United States had been changing with indications there was a greater concentration of wealth held by the top 10% and top 1% of the population.[1] A PBS report by Solman on Aug. 16, 2011 now found that financial gains over the last decade in the United States have been mostly made at the "tippy-top" of the economic food chain as more people fall out of the middle class. The top 20 percent of Americans now holds 84 percent of U.S. wealth.[2], the 2nd 20 % holds 11%, the third 20 % 4 %.
