Georges Guetary was not the original choice for the part. Believe or not, Minnelli wanted Maurice Chevalier. Both Guetary and Chevalier were noted Paris Music Hall Singing Stars. It seems that someone had blacklisted Chevalier during the War--implying he was a Nazi sympatizer. MGM couldn't clear his name in time to do the picture. But of course, Chevalier was found innocent of all charges. In fact, he had worked for The Resistance, Le Maquis.
