    Casablancalover: I stand corrected; I might have cast the net too narrowly. I’ve not seen all the movies you mentioned but from what I know they deal with good people trying to overcome situations that most folks would link with evil. As Francis of Assisi told his band; “Preach the Gospel, use words when necessary”.

  2. Thank you for seconding my choice of Sam Elliott. I thought he might sound too Southwestern to some people for something regarding Lincoln but I could listen to him all day. Another reason to envy Katharine Ross.

  3. Celia Lovsky was one of the people I once dreamed of working with. As the photo shows even in old age she was more beautiful than most 20 year olds. Thank you, Mongo, for brightening my day.

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}I'm still wrapping my mind around a 4-hour funeral. No wonder Cissy cracked at the end; who wouldn't have? I'm glad it's all over so the family can hopefully have some private time and that there was no place at the church for a certain singer and his brood who had the nerve to show up. Sometimes justice is served. Cane we just leave it alone now?{font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}Thank you for your defense of the movie. I understand that Jennifer Jones had some connection with the Catholic Church in her youth and Charles Bickford was a lifelong one; if so, they probably did take their portrayals more seriously than others might have and played these people as reverently as possible. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}While Gladys Cooper's Sister Marie Therese was excellently played the truth is that she never came to believe in Bernadette's visions and died thinking her a phony. This came from a lecture about Lourdes from a priest so I'm sadly accepting the movie is untruthful in that instance. Oddly, it's doubtful that the mother of Lucia, the oldest Fatima child, believed them either. The movie's almost like *Lady Jane* which is 90 percent true but the 10 percent that isn't takes over the story and breaks your heart if you know the truth. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}That Hollywood made the film so moving rather than cynical is something that would never happen today. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}Alexander Scourby? Thank you, Drago. Since you've broken the ice, there's Edward Herrmann and Monte Markham who seem to have taken his place in modern times. As he seems to really love American history there's also Sam Elliott. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}She lived 95 years and had a happy professional and personal life. I'm certain that the Harmon family is grieving at her loss but also taking comfort in that and that so many fans remembers her so fondly.{font}

    {font:}{color:black}Jack: I didn't realize that this was a birthday card to you or you're a real Valentine until now. Please accept belated good wishes for many more and my gratitude for all I've learned from you about movies these past few years. Calories or no, I hope you got some real chocolate nut brownies.{font}

    Okay, I finally get John Barrymore's appeal. If his talent matched his looks, no wonder he was such a star. It's sad that by the time we see most of his films on TCM he'd let himself become so disapated. Nobody seems to have learned much from it all or we wouldn't be reading about Whitney Houston.

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}Governor Christie's reasons for having the flags lowered made sense and he came across as a very compassionate person. The family was always proud to be from New Jersey and the funeral will be there. He's right; "There but for the grace..."{font}

  11. {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:Times New Roman}I just heard about Bruno Serrato, the Italian immigrant who’s become a California restrauntur and philanthropist. This exchange from Rocky immediately came to mind. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:Times New Roman}“Rocky, do you believe that America is still the land of opportunity?” {font}

    {font:Times New Roman}I watched the British Film Award-their Oscars-show last night and *The Help *did well winning Viola Davis one for her performance. She commented on such an American story being recognized elsewhere. Also a young Black British actor took one home; he sounds like there but looks like any of those we know here. Some roles are racial-neutral; others need a person of that race to tell it properly. I guess the important thing is that the integrity of the story is kept. {font}

    And another one in the making. Even if it turns out Whitney Houston was not back on drugs-which I hope-it's a reminder that the damage done to your body by drug abuse, espically cocaine, is often permanent and can have a timebomb effect that might not come to roost until long after someone's quit. I understand that the heart is among the most vulnerable organs and, with the brain, the most vital. My sympathy to her daughter.

    {font:}{color:black}I watched it again and was struck by the fact that the problems this couple faced didn't really have all that much to do with money. Wealth and power did contribute to Bick's arrogance but was not the main source of his conflicts with Leslie. They had to learn to accept each other as they were and love regardless, deal with the fact that their expatiations for their children did not match what the children wanted, and finally the fact that the their world was changing and they had become the "older generation" with those behind them now running the show. This is true of all families regardless of their economic status. This is what keeps the story moving. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}I guess you're right about the family coloring from a genetic standpoint but I never noticed it before. Jordan and Juana have so little time together in the film I didn't catch the lack of sparks but she was a religious and cultured Mexican woman so would have been reserved in that department in public. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}Travel was more difficult back then and we're talking about 2,000 miles at least. Maybe the Lyntons didn't go to Texas or if they did, it didn't seem important to the story. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}FredC: That scene is also in the book and is one of my favorites. Most of scenes involving the Mexicans show how discriminated they were. It’s ironic that Angel, whom Leslie has to fight to save as a sick child, is the one who dies in defense of the country that allows such treatment of his people. The restaurant incident shows that while Bick has changed in his views a bit, he and the country have a long way to go. OK, maybe it’s just family honor but I’d rather see it as Leslie does. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}A big gaffe seems to appear when Bob and Judy get married. Pearl Harbor is announced as they leave their car and head for a bedroom in the Benedict house. When we see them come down it’s Christmas morning. Insert your own risqué comment. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}None of this has changed my love for this movie. I find so much to like and nothing is perfect. Enjoyed seeing it again. {font}

    Add me to the list. He was nearly always a vilain; as soon as he came on screen you knew who the hero would be gunning down before the fade out. If he didn't achieve star status he had a long career which a lot of them did not.

    I thought I was the only one who'd recognize his name and face; it's nice to know there are two more out there.

  17. {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}Actually when I first saw the play I thought the player was showboating. I sure they're going to explain it to death on ESPN. That's kind of their job.{font}{font:}{color:black} {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}This was an odd if understandable play. You don't usually see a team behind not wanting to score a touchdown that late in the game. I guess it was a calculated risk. If it worked and they got the field goal in the last seconds, it worked. If it went wild, they were out of luck. As it went they got the TD then had to hold off the Patriots for nearly a minute which they really didn't do. Brady's pass was a foot too short or they would have won.{font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}I don't think I'll ever forget the look of shock and grief on Robert Kraft's face at the end. He was devastated for the team and the memory of his wife they were all praying for. I liked the way the Giants came back from such a bad early season start but that look took some starch out of the win for me.{font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}

    {font:}{color:black}I'm reading the "American" comments with great interest. I don't know what else we USA residents can call ourselves as the USM folks are Mexicans and those of the provinces of Canada are Canadians. It's true that in a sense the residents of both continents are all Americans-especially with populations moving around-but the term seems to be universally understood to be USA folks. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}Interesting trivia point Current Oscar nominee Rooney Mara is related to the Mara family who owns the New York Giants.{font}{font:}{color:black} {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}The Rooney comes from the Pittsburg Steelers Rooney family; she's double football royalty. {font}

    {font:Times New Roman} {font}{font:}{color:black}I've been reading about all the scheduled events and almost wishing I'd waited until this year to go. I did say almost. I knew last year it might be my only opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and would not have missed anything I saw or meeting you, Lynn, Kyle and Meg for anything. My finances are almost non-existent this year so a return is out. I'm trying to put together a few hundred dollars to finally see my sister in Texas.{font}

    After having TCM on most of the day I gave in and am watching the game. I turned it on just before six and was surprised to see it was already dark in Indianapolis. It was still light here in Tampa and went dark just after 6:45. Does being closer to the Equator give us more daylight?

    I'm leaning towards the Giants because I like the classy Manning family but after reading a beautiful article about Myra Kraft and why the Patriots are wearing black armbands in her memory I can't be sad if they win. I'll just enjoy the game and commercials no matter who wins.
