The Diana Dors George Brent appreication thread
Kordagirl replied to dsclassic's topic in General Discussions
Oh dear I have to say it ... 'What are Diana Dors?' - British judge in case where, for some reason I can't remember, a ref. to the splendiferous Miss D. was made. True story. Glad to see her getting her due. She's MARVELOUS in an early '70's children's film (equally good for adults if not more so) 'THE AMAZING MR BLUNDEN' in which she plays a deliciously evil would-be-child-murdering housekeeper. Really glad to know abt. her books! -

DEFINITELY original titles. Nearly always better. -
Capuchin's post made me think of 'The Pink Panther' ... hope you're all better now Capuchin. I find a little whiskey makes that cider go down better. Love the Dr Zhivago in Raleigh story! That's why your grandmother always tells you to take a cardigan or jacket when you go to the cinema! Be careful shovelling Ham. Don't know why but I like Goodbye Mr Chips on a cold day. Nought to do with climate just cozy factor. Stay warm & keep cool all.

Don't think I've ever seen a creepier performance than Attenborough's in this ... chilling doesn't even begin to describe it ... and John Hurt, oh heavens. All the stranger for being true. Agree abt. Attenborough & Malden & would add John Hurt to the list! Definitely one for TCM. After watching this it's most unsettling to see Attenborough as Santa in the re-make of 'Miracle on 34th St.' ! The Mouse that Roared - alternative Q-bomb

Would you believe I've never seen Moonstruck?! Nothing against it just not good at getting round to things. Now that I know John Mahoney's in it will definitely watch soon. He's great in everything I've ever seen him in. Probably my most up-to-date viewing of Mahoney would be Frazier but it's not as if that's an old show, it only started ... oh, wait ...! Sure it would give me a turn to see him now. gives me a turn to see me now! -
I almost died a two weeks ago and I need your prayers.

Will definitely be praying/lighting candles for you, Kim. I can't imagine what you must be going through ... I'd definitely have an edge too. Lawyer maybe just for what happened at hospital and not the accident itself? At any rate, lawyer or not, I really hope things will work out. I've seen with my mother what can happen in a hospital if someone's not there every minute to be watching out. Hope you can stay strong. -
How exciting to get to meet the author ... she must have been a fascinating person indeed. Thanks so much for sharing that - it makes the movie all the more enjoyable. Can't imagine an actual human being resembling Greer Garson! That would be a nice way to go through life. I can't wait to watch the film all the way through, especially now that I know more about the background of it ... things like that can give it a different sort of life. Re. TikiSoo, love the idea of a day of school movies! There really is something about them ... you get the good stuff about school without the bad ... can feel all cozy and remember-y while you conveniently block out the adolescent miseries! Books about school so much fun too ... much more fun than real school books! The school in the film is called Calvin Coolidge, isn't it? Am I right in thinking he's the president that used the non-existent word 'normalcy'? If I'm right that would be quite the irony!

After having heard my mother talk about this movie all my life (she uses the title as a catch-phrase for the way she & I tend to go about things) I finally have the chance to see it then go and miss all but about the last 45 mins. ... However, based on that alone I'm buying the DVD! Can't believe TCM on their website info. about this film doesn't list the MAGNIFICENT Patrick Bedford or Jose Rodriguez, who has so much screen presence it's uncanny. Those who like this might also like Sandy Dennis in 'Thank You all Very Much.' She was such a great actress, subtle and fascinating. A+ TCM!

'Eight Men Out' 1988 Charlie Sheen again! Keeps turning up like a bad penny! Like him as an actor though. All the best. -

Where have you gone, Joe diMaggio ...? don't think it was growing up, just the world changing so much. Feel much the same way about football (soccer), those stupid hooligans, and boxing. Just not the same somehow. How exciting those games must have been! You're really a part of history. The one with John Mahoney and John Cusack is really good but I still can't remember the name! I could do something sensible like look it up. Thanks again for your kind words. Say it's so, Joe! -
Really should've posted my earlier burst of excitement under this thread not general discussions. I don't get promoted to the upper fifth. Is this a movie or is this a movie? Just perfection. Everyone in it - Michael Redgrave OF COURSE, one of his best I think, Leslie Howard's equally talented son Ronald, and Brian Smith being utterly amazing. Hyde-White magnificent as ever. Apparently the Greek words on the blackboard in the first schoolroom scene are, in fact from ... the Browning Version of the Agamemnon and mean: 'And, through desire of one across the main, A ghost will seem within the house to reign. And hateful to the husband is the grace Of well-shaped statues: in place of eyes Those blanks - all Aphrodite dies.' As if the film itself didn't rip one up enough. Had to grab the nearest equivalent to a handkerchief which happened to be a coffee filter. That cd. be a new rating for the weep-factor; not how many Kleenex but how many coffee filters. musicalnovelty, how true abt. Madame Ouspenskaya! Any film's worth it for that alone. Appropriate for your moniker too ... a novelty indeed!

The Mouse that Roared - alternative Q-bomb
Kordagirl replied to Kordagirl's topic in General Discussions
Thank you clearskies, v. nice to hear as I always worry I'm boring people by going off-topic and not being moviebuff enough. All the talk about baseball last night brought an old song abt. Hank Greenberg back into my mind, 'Goodbye, Mr. Ball, goodbye, you are gonna see an awful lot of sky ...' Once it's in your head it doesn't want to leave. I always worry about getting wet in the shower too. It's like some sort of plumbing accident that invariably happens when you've got nothing on. Most embarrassing. -

How can anyone, seeing this photo, claim that steroids don't cause permanent problems? Just look at the size of the heads, and the bizarre growths protruding from the shoulder areas, of the two team members at back. Sure seems like baseball ain't what it used to be, but then, you know me, Al. -
BUT DADDY, WE LIKE STARING AT THE INDIAN HEAD! Great photo ... hope everyone's year is equally enjoyable! Thanks and best to all at home and station!

Kordagirl replied to Kordagirl's topic in General Discussions
Oh dear ... perhaps it might help erase the bad memory if you watch the film again? Is quite funny and there's only the one reference to baseball. I think. I really am sorry about your Braves. Sounds horrible. Childhood Sports Traumas have a way of lingering. Am guessing 'Field of Dreams' is probably not your favourite film or does it work the opposite way - non-baseball films you don't like, baseball films you do? How about 'Damn Yankees'? If only they'd had the sense to cast Cagney as the Coach who sings 'You Gotta Have Heart'!!! Apart from that am pretty ignorant on baseball films. Oh - Pride of the Yankees? There was a really good one not long ago with John Mahoney. can't remember name. Yikes, hope I'm not torturing you. Here you are really deeply affected and I just keep listing bloody baseball films. Sorry. Happy New Year Wrigley Field scene in Ferris Bueller OK? S-Wing ... S-Orry ... -

OMG what a super way to start the New Year!!!! My mother will be SO happy about this! I had no idea that's how he got his start. I'd better warn the neighbours - I have a feeling there's going to be a lot more singing when Mum sees this! Thank you hamradio! -

Hamradio ... I don't know where my brain is going these days ... how could I have ignored your ref. to WGN using the wonderful 'Let's Go the the Lobby' ads?! Was thrilled to bits at seeing it. My mother was so excited she burst out into a heartfelt rendition of 'The Man with the Texaco Star.' Which ostensibly has nothing to do with 'Let's Go to the Lobby,' just a slight tidal wave of nostlgia. Happy New Year! -
Gregorian Calendar not good enough for TCM?

Fascinating thanks for sharing! -
Thought it would be fun, since you're all such a darned interesting lot, to share thoughts on various aspects of films turned into books. A few to start us off ... MRS MINIVER REBECCA RANDOM HARVEST THE THIN MAN All opinions greatly appreciated!

I liked that song too, glad you reminded me of it.

Thanks Holly, I was trying to think of bigger roles than the one Audrey had in LAVENDER HILL MOB. It's been decades since I've seen YOUNG WIVES' TALE so the old memory's probably playing tricks, but it seems like she had a better part in the latter. Not familiar with NOUS IRONS ... sounds interesting.

NOBODY PUTS FERRIS IN THE CORNER! While it's not classic as in CLASSIC, lavenderblue made an excellent point in that TCM has shown far worse - real schlock - that is by no means the better for being older than 'Ferris.' And honestly, just how many more times are they going to show '7 Brides for 7 Brothers'? It's a good movie but seems like it's on every time I turn round. ODDLY CHRISTMASSY Though I've seen 'Bueller' more times than I care to admit, I'd never before watched it during the Christmas season, and it suddenly hit me ... it's actually a bit - a bit - like 'A Christmas Carol.' Allright, only a bit, but enough to make it more enjoyable. Which reminds me, did TCM ignore Alistair Sim this year? Am hoping I'm mistaken. While on the whole I prefer older stuff, an occasional more recent offering has its place as long as it's good. 'Bueller' beats 'Alien Teens Attack!' every time. NO WAY ... WAY! Can't help wondering - because I did it too, briefly - if part of the negative reaction to this being shown is simply the pistol-whipping effect of TIME. Do a double-take every time I realize the 80's were twenty-&-more years ago. Everybody knows the 60's were twenty years ago! Oh, wait ... PRAISES OF TCM Thought the Christmas-time & New Year's selections this year were excellent. The Barbara Stanwyck films were marvelous, 'Holmes for Christmas' incredibly clever and good fun, 'Holiday Affair' a splendid example of Mitchum's versatility, 'Thin Man' series tailor-made for New Year's Eve. Only wish I could be a fan - officially - of Asta. Is anyone else out there bats enough to think there should be a separate 'Animal Stars' section? Considering I've been known to watch entire films just for a dog, I may not be the best judge.
