  1. as I see in Cohen Bros films where every other word is the F word I don't think this is true about their films at all. Even No Country for Old Men (which I disliked) was not like this. Fargo did have a lot of curse words but it was only specific characters doing the cursing. I don't remember any curses in True Grit or O Brother.
  2. I didn't realize the tickets were free. Well that's something. Yes traveling to NY and staying over is definitely not cheap (especially for someone who is out of work at the moment). If I can get tickets I might be able to stay over a friends place though (it being on a Monday does complicate things). Well I am definitely considering Edited by: Kinokima on Mar 3, 2011 9:31 AM
  3. Perhaps I am jumping the gun but I have communicated with many people over the years on the Internet where English was not their first language and they do not use terms like "American". It is too obvious a mistake (and so are the other mistakes in the post). This comes off as a troll post to me.
  4. I am very disappointed that they are not coming to Philadelphia. I know that they can't go everywhere but it seems TCM never comes to this city. And I don't see the point of going to NYC & Long Island. If it's not too expensive maybe I will try to get tickets for the NYC spot but I am still disappointed Philadelphia is left out again (and it seems a lot of people on these boards are from this area too).
  5. Criterion will be putting a lot of titles they have licensed but are not out on DVD yet on Hulu+. I didn't notice those titles specifically but I did notice a lot of Chaplin titles not on DVD by Criterion yet.
  6. Wow they are really getting those schedules out quickly. I guess because of the film festival. One thing I noticed is there seems to be a special on B-rated horror/sci-fi films on Thursdays. Meh! But who knows maybe I will discover something I like from these films. One of these days falls on my birthday the 9th but I am more excited about the morning of that day with a lot of pre-codes including *Night Nurse* which I still have not seen. I wish those had been in the evening instead but we can't have everything I guess. I can't tell who the SOTM is or if there even is a SOTM Oh and I see a lot of great movies in Prime Time Including: Dodsworth, Adventures of Robin Hood, The General, The Night of the Hunter, Bringing Up Baby, Out of the Past, Singing in the Rain Twentieth Century, and I am especially happy to see it in Prime Time: *I Know Where I'm Going* Okay yeah some of these might be the usual suspects (and a few I already have on DVD) but I love them all just the same. Although I have already seen it thanks to Criterion nice to see *Night Train to Munich* on the schedule in prime time as well
  7. Last Airbender's awfulness goes well beyond obsession with 3D. No I didn't see it but I read enough about it and knew almost from the get go it was going to be horrible when I heard the changes they were making to the story and the cast they chose. I loved the TV program it was based on and you couldn't take something so wonderful and turn it into something so horrible. Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 28, 2011 8:06 AM
  8. I think I might have misunderstood this thread late at night. Is this about the film You Were Never Lovelier? Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 28, 2011 8:01 AM
  9. If you had bet money you would have did well for yourself I was so upset Deakins lost cinematography AGAIN. Other then that my feelings ranged from okay to happy with the winners. Colin Firth and Toy Story 3 were the best wins of the evening.
  10. I can't really comment much on 1971 since I've only seen The French Connection & Fiddler on the Roof. French Connection is alright but I much prefer Fiddler. I also prefer Topol's performance to Hackman's. Still it seems Clockwork Orange and Last Picture Show (neither of which I have seen) are the nominees most highly regarded today.
  11. Sorry Johnny I am going to agree with the majority here. Dodsworth is a great film and should be remembered better today if just for Huston's wonderful natural performance. The first time I heard about this movie was not because of TCM but someone on the Classic Film Board over at IMDB who said it was one of their favorite movies of the 30's. Because of that I was really looking forward to seeing it and it did not disappoint. Personally I am happy TCM is making it an essential because it is a real gem.
  12. BUMP Found a great right up on this film from the MOMA which screened Holiday recently. I wish I could have went. http://www.moma.org/explore/inside_out/2011/02/22/george-cukors-holiday/
  13. Oh yes if White Heat had been nominated that would have been an excellent choice. I don't think the Academy really went for gangster films until the Godfather though in the 1970's. The Set-up was also a great film from that year. There is also the Third Man but I think that was eligible for the 1950 Oscars not 1949.
  14. I have to admit not knowing where the film was supposed to take place I thought it was set in the South or Midwest. Well I definitely didn't think the North. I actually thought it was pretty good film although not as good as the Heiress which was also nominated that year (I have not seen the other films that were nominated). Is this the Best Oscar winner? Definitely not! Is it the worst? Not even close.
  15. Until the technology becomes cheap & easy to use for everyone then it should only be an option not a requirement. I can imagine telling someone's grandmother that to enjoy TCM she needs to download the movies from the Internet. For the record TCM does keep up with current technology. They are on facebook & twitter. They have monthly Online Pod Casts. However unlike ABC or CBS they do not own the content they show. That is why they are not streaming their films Online. I expect that would cost extra. If people want to watch Classic Movies online there are many legal titles on Netflix & Hulu+ and many illegal ones of Youtube. There are also a bunch of films that no longer have a copyright on the Internet Archive.
  16. I was just thinking I wonder if anyone actually did watch Return of the King for the first time on TCM last night and if so what they would think because the film is so dependent on the other two in the series. I understand why TCM only showed ROTK because it is the film in the trilogy that won Best Picture but if you never saw the other two it is somewhat hard to fully appreciate the 3rd I think. Of course I don't want to think about the complaints if they ever did show all 3 on TCM. I am definitely not suggesting it. lol Besides while I don't through a fit like some people when the occasional modern film comes on I am much happier with the older ones Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 22, 2011 12:01 AM
  17. Do you also pay everyone else's monthly cable bill? I wish you would pay mine.
  18. > I think IMDB is good for cast/credits/production details/etc. User reviews are hit & miss, more often the latter. The message boards are mostly useless. Few knowledgeable people and too many youngins who have just seen Sergio Leone's westerns for the first time. > I guess you don't hang out at the *Classic Film Board* over there. I think there are a lot of arrogant members there but they definitely know their film.
  19. Hmm, I figured *you* would deny you ever played "Pretty In Pink" lol My goodness is JonasEB TCM? I never knew! LOL
  20. I'll defend LOTR as great films (because they are in my opinion) but personally it doesn't affect me if TCM shows them or not. I already own all 3 on DVD. I can watch them anytime I want of course I rarely do because they are so long. Thus despite loving ROTK I did not watch it when it just aired on TCM. But ROTK did win the best picture Oscar and that is why it is being shown at 10:00 PM EST like the other Best Picture winners this month. They choose a large selection of Best Pictures from many different years from the 1st one Wings to the Lord of the Rings. I expect next year they will show some of the same ones again but many different ones too.
  21. I don't always agree with Fred but at least he does actually talk about movies he enjoys. You however seem to have just joined this website to complain. There is nothing sensible about that. I love old classic films but I am pretty sure the Lord of the Rings films will be remembered 20 years and even 50 years from now because they are based on a very famous & beloved Classic fantasy story from the 1950's. The films successfully captured the essence of these novels. And I was a fan of the novels first. There was much more to these movies than the CGI. While the majority of films shown on TCM are from the studio era the channel has been showing the occasional recent film since its creation (no they did not play 2000 films in the 1990's however). So there is nothing new here. There has also always been more recent films in Oscar month. Again nothing new here. But I guess the complaints are nothing new either. They are getting old however.
  22. I don't want to even think of RO's replacement but I have no problem with Baldwin co-hosting the essentials. He is obviously a classic film aficinado and he does have chemistry with Osbourne. That being said I would love if Scorsese could somehow co-host the essentials. I am sure this would never work out with his schedule but his love of films and knowledge is also wonderful. Has he ever been chosen as a guest programmer at least? Actually a month of film directors as guest programmers like they did with the film critics would be really neat. 23. Lord of the Rings is the type of film that would not have worked without CG. I love the book and I honestly thought it wouldn't work but Peter Jackson pleasantly surprised me. However most films do not need the amount of CG that is used. CG is fine when it is used to enhance a good story not in place of a story. edit: However I disagree about Pixar. I do love 2D animation (which is why I am happy Studio Ghibli sticks with it) but Pixar is definitely the best at CG animation. There is a sense of magic in their films and more importantly there is always a good story. Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 19, 2011 11:50 AM
  24. I liked the idea of the story but it didn't seem focused enough for me. The 3 friends' stories was too much for 1 movie or at least what they tried to do with them. But the roller skating and trash can dance were amazing. Worth watching for that!
  25. Criterion definitely has the rights to City Lights and all of Chaplin's films. They just announced The Great Dictator for release in May. I expect City Lights will be their next big Chaplin announcement. Modern Times is also now on DVD. And The Immigrant is included as an extra on Au Revoir Les Enfants.
