Cary Grant actually did not turn down James Bond. He probably would have done it but only for 1 movie. However executives saw it as a franchise and having Cary Grant for only 1 movie was not enough.
-
Well if you want to see it again you are in luck. It is coming on again on June 9th at 8:30 AM EST.
-
I don't know if this has already been mentioned. I do not feel like going through all the pages of this thread to find out but I just realized on the "Remind Me Feature" you can now only remind yourself for one date a movie is on.
I usually checked multiple dates & times a movie was coming on because sometimes for whatever reason I might miss the first time and it is good to be reminded the movie is coming on again (it also helps if I really enjoyed the movie and want to record it the 2nd time).
However this new format uses radio buttons so you can only check off one date at a time. I miss the old format which used check buttons where you could check off multiple dates you want to be reminded a movie is playing. This new format just creates extra unnecessary steps.
edit: Unless I am mistaken I also noticed there is no link to remind yourself about a movie that is playing on the movie's actual database page.

Obviously I realized you were joking but I still think you are being unfair to the employees. There were a lot of great choices this month and I am impressed.
And yes while some are not the most inspired choices (that is just my opinion) I think there are a lot of great ones to balance it off. A few of them are premieres too.
-
JohnnyGeetar I guess you missed some of the amazing films chosen by employees this month
Safe in Hell (amazing Pre-Code)
Caught (Rare Noir directed by Ophuls)
Riffifi (Great French Heist Film)
I also always cheer when Seven Samurai comes on.
And that is just to name a few of the ones I am excited for!

Well I don't know if he regretted it but I regret that Cary Grant turned down Sabrina and especially Love in the Afternoon.
Cary Grant also turned down A Star is Born (Musical), Roman Holiday, and Ninotchka. But I think these turned out fine without him.
If Cary had done A Star is Born he might have picked up another Oscar nomination. James Mason got the nomination and was great in the role.

> For pre-codes about women trying to sleep their way up in society, BABY FACE is far superior to RED-HEADED WOMAN
I don't know if I agree with that. I think both movies are interesting but Red Headed Woman definitely has the superior ending...a bad girl to the end!
Although I do like the symbolism of "rising to the top" in Baby Face.
But like others I also enjoyed Three Wise Girls on Tuesday Night. I almost didn't watch it but then I read how rare it was so now I am glad I didn't miss it. It was a bit predictable but a fun movie all the same.
And I still need to watch Suzy which I have recorded!

From a usability stand point I definitely think there are some issues. Okay I found the synopsis and remind me links by clicking Expand but only after I read that is how you do it on this message board. And even then it took me some time to find the Expand link. Just think about the many people out there who are not on this message board.
You should not need to click something else to find the summary and Remind Me button.
Otherwise though I find the grid pretty easy to read. I still don't see themes on the schedule. I was disappointed these were taken off the old schedule and now I am disappointed I don't see them on the new schedule.
edit: Never mind what I said about the themes. I do see them on the schedule now. That is a positive thing.
edit 2: I also can't find how to see beyond this month's schedule (I liked that I was able to see 2 months in advance). Does anyone know if there is a way to see April and May?

Oh I feel your pain. Not with Amarcord that actually recorded fine for me but those emergency broadcasts happen all the time when I tape something late at night.

What about this great promo
edit: Although I never heard reading was an antiquated activity. We can enjoy classic films, Jean Harlow and reading. lol

Wow Safe in Hell...what a great Pre-Code.
I loved Dorothy's Performance. But what I was most impressed about what the sympathetic portrayal of the two black characters (besides the lawyer they seemed to be the two most decent people on the Island).
The title was so very fitting too!
-
Although I doubt anyone knows him here because he is a mainly known in the UK, John Simm is very selective with his material. He definitely never works for just a pay check.
-
I am really looking forward to *Safe in Hell* tomorrow night. It sounds like a great pre-code.

Yes there is an On Demand TCM channel which usually has a few movies a month.
Btw can anyone tell me what Alfred Hitchcock Presents episodes Patricia was in? I think I want to watch some.

edit: Nevermind found the info
1. Into Thin Air (30 October 1955) - Diana Winthrop (as Pat Hitchcock)
2. The Older Sister (22 January 1956) - Margaret (as Pat Hitchcock)
3. The Belfry (13 May 1956) - Ellie Marsh (as Pat Hitchcock)
4. I Killed the Count: Part 1 (17 March 1957) - Polly Stephens (as Pat Hitchcock)
5. The Glass Eye (6 October 1957) - Saleslady (as Pat Hitchcock)
6. Silent Witness (3 November 1957) - Nancy Mason (as Pat Hitchcock)
7. The Crocodile Case (25 May 1958) - Aileen (as Pat Hitchcock)
8. The Morning of the Bride (15 February 1959) - Pat (as Pat Hitchcock)
9. The Cuckoo Clock (17 April 1960) - Dorothy (as Pat Hitchcock)

Woops for some reason I thought that other guy next to Patricia was Cary Grant but IMDB says it is Robert Cummings.
Well Robert isn't one of my favorites but I still like that picture.

-
Has she ever been invited to TCM? I don't necessarily think any famous parents' child would be appropriate but I would love to hear from the daughter of Hitchcock
And I love this pic (in between two of my favorites)

Of course Lord of the Rings is an epic

This is what an epic originally was as pertains to poetry
"is a lengthy narrative poem, ordinarily concerning a serious subject containing details of heroic deeds and events significant to a culture or nation"
-
One of the channels (I believe ABC or NBC) has exclusive rights to the Ten Commandments. The same way NBC has exclusive rights to It's a Wonderful Life.
I have no idea about the other film!
-
I love certain epics: I have sat through Gone with the Wind and The Ten Commandments many times. I also loved the Lord of the Rings films (I saw them in the theater more than once) . What about the Great Escape? Does that count as an epic? I can watch that every time its on.
I also saw Lawrence of Arabia all the way through once but I really liked it. I have a recording of it maybe I will watch it again one of these days.
What about Seven Samurai? I also only saw that only once but I liked it enough to buy the DVD.
So I definitely enjoy a lot of epics. However that being said lately (in the last few years or so) I think I am more impressed by a movie that can tell its story in less than 2 hours.
As for Ben-Hur I like it up to the chariot race after that it goes down hill for me!
-
Thanks Swithin. That is definitely above my price range but it is helpful to know it is in Chelsea.
I am trying to convince a friend or friends to go with me to split the hotel cost or at least to have someone to travel back with but so far none of them are having it. I would really like to try to find a way to go.
-
Sorry to double post but could anyone who is from NY tell me reasonably priced hotels near the place where Manchurian will be playing (or hotels near good public transportation)?
I figure I should research into this now in case I can't stay with my friend (I don't really want to bother her on a work night).
edit: Ooh looks like April 2nd is actually a Saturday!

There might have been some swear words in O Brother but I don't remember anything extensive and I saw the film fairly recently. There is also minor curse words and saying the F word constantly. For example I don't think saying God's name in vain is all that awful personally. And even hearing the F word in a film on ocassion (depending on the circumstances) doesn't bother me all that much.
Of course the way characters talk in a Coen brothers film says a whole lot about their character.

as I see in Cohen Bros films where every other word is the F word
I don't think this is true about their films at all. Even No Country for Old Men (which I disliked) was not like this. Fargo did have a lot of curse words but it was only specific characters doing the cursing.
I don't remember any curses in True Grit or O Brother.

I didn't realize the tickets were free. Well that's something. Yes traveling to NY and staying over is definitely not cheap (especially for someone who is out of work at the moment). If I can get tickets I might be able to stay over a friends place though (it being on a Monday does complicate things). Well I am definitely considering
