  1. "The most difficult shot, that kind of freaked me when I read the script, was the work just tracking with **** in the night. You think well, it?s a simple shot ? a shot of a horse?s head galloping ? but when you think it?s at night, and the horse is black, on this rough terrain? at one point we were actually considering, and got the effects company to figure out how they could do it as a completely CG shot. Create the horse?s head and the foam coming out of his mouth and everything else. We shot some tests and got something halfway decent in pre-production, but then we dedicated a Saturday night to doing some of this work. We built a road, a 1,500-foot road, in the cottonwood forest so we could track alongside the horse in this electric golf cart thing. So it was a matter of knowing how to do it. But the fact that we did it live had a much greater impact than if we would have done it with computer generated images. It just seemed right for the film, to do everything in camera." http://www.movieline.com/2011/02/roger-deakins-interview.php?page=2 But there was definitely some CG in the film such as the snakes and apparently they used CG to make the rivers look more dangerous than they actually were.
  2. Bumping Someone uploaded the entire Truffaut/Hitchcock interviews in MP3 format http://www.filmdetail.com/2011/02/14/the-hitchcock-and-truffaut-tapes/ I had the book on my to read list for some time but this might even be better.
  3. Fred what you don't seem to understand is all those things are suggestions. No one is saying that TCM has to or should play any of those type of films. But I don't see anything wrong with people making suggestions. Maybe TCM does get an idea from those suggestions, maybe they don't. I never support when people complain that TCM doesn't show enough of these films. I think that is wrong. But I also think it is wrong to say that people cannot make suggestions of types of films they would like to see on the channel. Those long list of suggestions you posted do show that there are many different types of fans who watch TCM but it doesn't mean TCM has to honor every suggestion. Of course it would be impossible for TCM to satisfy everyone all the time. There is also difference between saying it would be nice if TCM plays more Westerns (fine) to TCM sucks because it doesn't play Westerns every Tuesday.
  4. LOL that is one of my favorite TW episodes. Just thinking of the ending makes me tear up. Probably one of the cruelest endings in history. I hope that vague comment doesn't spoil anyone.
  5. Thank you Jonas for the information Anyways I watched Street Angel today and enjoyed it. Gaynor & Farrell were really good and they had great chemistry. The film did get a bit melodramatic for me at parts towards the end but other than that I enjoyed it. Loved the scenes at the circus especially. This film also had a really nice soundtrack with certain songs being sung with words. I was impressed with that. I also liked that some of the music was the same used in one of my favorite films from the 30's Trouble in Paradise.
  6. > {quote:title=FredCDobbs wrote:}{quote} > > > No, he looked just like an old drunk washed-up Peter O?Toole, and I don?t want to see that. I?d rather remember him as the handsome Lawrence of Arabia. He wasn't trying to look like Errol Flynn he was trying to portray an Errol Flynn type character in the 50's. The fact that he looked old, drunk, and washed up means he portrayed the character perfectly. It's fine that you like him in Lawrence of Arabia more or that you didn't like this movie but I am at a loss what was wrong with his portrayal. He *was* playing an old, drunk, and washed up character.
  7. > {quote:title=FredCDobbs wrote:}{quote} > > I tried watching My Favorite Year, but it was too corny. Peter O'Toole looked like he was really drunk all through the film. He looked like an old man who would have fallen off the rope had he really tried to swing across the theater. So you mean he was doing an excellent job of portraying the character he was supposed to be playing: A drunk washed up Errol Flynn type character.
  8. I have the same type of DVD Recorder as you LoveFilmNoir. It can be frustrating when there are two things I want to record on different channels. This doesn't happen often though, the only conflicts I have is when Match Game is on at the same time as a movie I want to record on TCM. Actually I would love to have a DVR for things I just want to watch not keep but at the moment I don't want to add another monthly cost to my bill. This is why I went with the one time cost of the DVD Recorder instead. But it would be helpful to have both I think. Because I don't have a DVR my DVD-R definitely gets a lot of use. 9. Well I would say 1968 for Lion in Winter but then I have only seen Ron Moody in Oliver to compare. Then again none of the other performances seem as well known today. Was Cliff Robertson really that good as Charly? I did read the book but never saw the movie. I did think Peter O'Toole was excellent in Lion in Winter. Even more so because he played the same character in Becket but was able to make the character different in Lion. Peter O'Toole could have won for Lawrence of Arabia but then Gregory Peck was also excellent as Atticus I have no qualms with the Oscars that year as that was a tough choice. Jack Lemmon was also very good. In 1964 it is tricky, although I love Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady, Peter & Richard were equally good if not better in Becket. But then I am not sure how to choose between O'Toole and Burton in that movie and I expect the Academy voters had the same problem. 1968 seems to be the year Peter O'Toole should have won. I am less familiar with his films in later years. I did enjoy him in My Favorite Year which I saw for the first time last night but he has certainly done better. I have Ruling Class recorded and hope to catch that soon.
  10. Although I generally really enjoy Laura; I actually think it somewhat falls apart in the second half when Laura returns. The idea of Laura is more captivating than Laura herself was. Double Indemnity is definitely the stronger Noir in my opinion with great performances by Barbara, Edward and Fred. Barbara's Phyllis also happens to be my favorite femme fatale.
  11. There is no vault and there hasn't been for a long time.
  12. TCM is showing movies that won & were nominated for Oscars. No Peter O'Toole never won an Oscar but he was nominated 8 times. This is a record. And really he should have won an Oscar.
  13. Actually we will be seeing this movie LIVE in December. It is an Essential for Saturday December 24th,. So not only in December but it will air on Christmas Eve.
  14. Because they are showing Peter O'Toole's Oscar Nominated Performances.
  15. Now that I disagree with I love that song. Although I actually somewhat prefer Sinatra's version to Crosby's.
  16. What do you mean why? I said because I am a collector and I like how shelves look filled with DVDs and Books not everything on a hard drive where you can't even see it. If I have to keep everything on a hard drive I don't know what I am spending money for at all. Might as well just rent the videos or take the books from the library. There is no value in keeping it stored where you can't show it off. Maybe there is value for you but not for me. And I also don't need to be told that everything is going digital. I worked in publishing & have a library science degree. I know all about it, it's still depressing to me. I also don't mean that it is depressing that things are available for streaming or downloading. That's great if you just want to watch something. And I have been doing this for a very long time. But if I want to _own it_ I want the physical product not something digital. Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 15, 2011 11:55 PM
  17. As a collector the idea of that makes me very sad. I do have some recordings off of TCM but I would rather have the physical DVD which looks pretty on a shelf. Mainly I try to collect Criterion though since there is more value for the DVD with the extras. It's a nice looking product. Just saving something on a mini hard drive is practical but also pretty depressing. It's the same with the Kindle I guess. I still love my physical books but it seems people want electronic ones now.
  18. I only recently (about a year ago) got a DVD Recorder and this because my VCR broke (I don't have a DVR). This is usually how I move onto new technology when my old technology gives way. I mainly got it so I can record Match Game (my obsession that goes with Classic Films) but it has worked out great for TCM. Not only can I now see some great titles that air late late at night, I can also record some of my favorite movies to keep. I never seem to rewatch them though because there is always something I haven't seen I want to watch first.
  19. I can play Region 2 DVDs and I have bought things from the UK before without a problem but I guess I won't know until I try. I am going to add those DVDs to my wish list on Amazon UK. But hopefully TCM will consider playing Seventh Heaven soon (it won't be until after May at this point though). Just to double check I am guessing this is the DVD set you mean right? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Frank-Borzage-Vol-Seventh-Heaven/dp/B001TQROB2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297817543&sr=8-1 edit: Also do you know anything about this DVD of Sunrise? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sunrise-Masters-Cinema-George-OBrien/dp/B002J91V3K/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1I7XD70X81ONU&colid=3M1LARDJEFAD1 Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 15, 2011 7:57 PM
  20. Gagman reviews for Street Angel are negative about the print on Netflix but no mention of this issue on Seventh Heaven. Hopefully they have the good print. I will consider your suggestion about getting it from the UK however. Are you sure those prints are good? If I rent something with a not a great print it's one thing but buying something is a different matter. The US Murnau/Borzage boxset however is way beyond my price range right now. Actually I think it is a shame those films are now only available in an expensive box set.
  21. Going My Way is by no means the worst Oscar Winner not even close. I actually thought it was pretty entertaining movie and no worse than something like You Can't Take it With You which is also overly sentimental. I think a lot of Oscar winners have that issue actually. That being said it didn't deserve to win. The Oscar definitely should have went to *Double Indemnity*
  22. Luckily I will be home (the small benefits of being out of work). But yes I am definitely looking forward to this. I also really want to see Seventh Heaven. It is on my Netflix Queue but it would still be nice if TCM airs it.
  23. Filmlover is correct TCM did not play Kings Row on Feb 2nd
  24. I am not actually suggesting that TCM play animated movies but if they ever consider might as well give them suggestions. I didn't have the channel when they did the Miyazaki fest. I wish I did but then I guess it doesn't matter now since I have most of the Studio Ghibli films on DVD including the wonderful Only Yesterday (directed by Takahata) which remains unlicensed in the US. I am glad TCM did show these films at one time though and introduced people to these movies who might not have watched them otherwise. As for people complaining I think that is never going to change. 25. My favorite complaints are the ones when people say TCM might become like AMC. They are complaining about something that hasn't even happened yet.....no may never happen. No one knows the future but I say let's just enjoy what we have now.
