  1. I recently saw Still Walking by Hirokazu Koreeda and it was fantastic. Much better than the Japanese recent winner Departures. He is definitely on my need to watch more list. I have Nobody Knows in my instant Queue.

I have not seen anything by the other two directors you mention. Although I am also surprised Wong Kar-wai has not been recognized and also films like Yi Yi and 4 months, 3 weeks, and 2 days (although the latter was probably too controversial for the Academy.

It does seem in general there was more love for great foreign directors in the past. Not just with the Academy but in the US as a whole there seems to be a lack of appreciation for foreign cinema. I went to my art house theater and asked if the Best foreign picture winner would be playing there and the person had no idea what I was talking about. I myself have probably seen more of the classic greats than great new foreign pictures because sometimes it is hard to know what is out there.

  2. Perhaps I am jumping the gun but I have communicated with many people over the years on the Internet where English was not their first language and they do not use terms like "American". It is too obvious a mistake (and so are the other mistakes in the post). This comes off as a troll post to me.

  3. I am very disappointed that they are not coming to Philadelphia. I know that they can't go everywhere but it seems TCM never comes to this city. And I don't see the point of going to NYC & Long Island.

If it's not too expensive maybe I will try to get tickets for the NYC spot but I am still disappointed Philadelphia is left out again (and it seems a lot of people on these boards are from this area too).

  4. Although I have seen North by Northwest many times (I love it and own it on DVD). I actually have not seen Dr. Zhivago. Every time it comes on TCM I consider watching it but then I remember just how long the movie is.

I think Dr. Zhivago needs a rental where I can pause it if need be. I guess I could also record it.

  5. I saw 6 of the nominated films this year which is more than usual. Last year I only saw 3.

However with those 6 I only saw 2 more films in general: Harry Potter & How to Train Your Dragon.

It's a lot easier to see all the nominees when there aren't 10 of them (which I honestly believe is far too many). Even though this year I think the choices were far better than last year's nominees.

And despite not liking Franco as host I still want to see 127 Hours in the theater.

  6. Quite honestly the only reason why the award is the "kiss of death" or appears to be is there are very few good roles written for women these days.

I have not seen Melissa Leo's performance. She might have deserved that award. But Hailee was also phenomenal and played a great female character (a rarity in movies these days). Maybe its wrong to look at it this way but for me an award for Hailee would also be an award for a great character.

Of course I certainly hope Hailee gets more good roles if her first role is any indication she is a great actress. I also always support seeing more from Amy Adams and Helena Bonham Carter.

  7. The Bad Word Jar on the True Grit set is true. The F word was worth $5.00 and all other curse words were worth a $1.00. However Hailee had to contribute .50 every time she said Like. I think she made more in the hundreds not thousands though. :)

She comes off as real classy young lady unlike her peer Melissa Leo who won the award.

edit: Did a little research and she collected $300 and donated it all to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

  8. I've been pretty meh on the Academy's choice for foreign film lately. The Last two years I enjoyed the films (Departures and The Secret in Their Eyes) but I wouldn't call them extraordinary. Of course I did not see any of the other nominated films but a few are in my to watch list like White Ribbon & Waltz with Bashir.

I did think the 2006 choice was excellent The Lives of Others (which is funny because I was so mad it beat Pan's Labyrinth at the time until I actually saw it. Pan's was also excellent).

Not quite as good as TLoO but Counterfeiters was better than last two years choices.

As for this years winner I have not seen it yet but the premise actually sounds fairly intriguing:

With his father working abroad, bullied Elias (Markus Rygaard) finds solace in a budding friendship with a volatile new student (William J?hnk Nielsen). But the boys' shared revenge only seems to invite more violence. It has a limited release on April 1 so I am praying it will play at the art house theater in my city.

But overall I feel the Academy has a better track record with the foreign language category than the Best Picture/Best Director category. I mean this category did award the greats like: Akira Kurosawa, Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, De Sica's Bicycle Thieves, Jacques Tati, etc, etc. Whereas these directors never won: Hitchcock, Kubrick, Chaplin, Howard Hawks, etc. (I know Rebecca won but that award went to Selznick not Hitchcock)

  9. Wow they are really getting those schedules out quickly. I guess because of the film festival.

One thing I noticed is there seems to be a special on B-rated horror/sci-fi films on Thursdays. Meh! But who knows maybe I will discover something I like from these films. One of these days falls on my birthday the 9th but I am more excited about the morning of that day with a lot of pre-codes including *Night Nurse* which I still have not seen. I wish those had been in the evening instead but we can't have everything I guess.

I can't tell who the SOTM is or if there even is a SOTM

Oh and I see a lot of great movies in Prime Time Including: Dodsworth, Adventures of Robin Hood, The General, The Night of the Hunter, Bringing Up Baby, Out of the Past, Singing in the Rain Twentieth Century, and I am especially happy to see it in Prime Time: *I Know Where I'm Going*

Okay yeah some of these might be the usual suspects (and a few I already have on DVD) but I love them all just the same.

Although I have already seen it thanks to Criterion nice to see *Night Train to Munich* on the schedule in prime time as well

  10. The Foreign Film category is for Foreign Language Film so British Films don't count. There is not the same attitude against British Films as there is for Foreign Language films unless it has a very distinct regional dialect. Many people don't like to read subtitles and that is why even if it is superior many times foreign films don't have a chance against English language films.

The following films were nominated in both the foreign language and best picture category:

    Z (French, 1969); Life Is Beautiful (Italian, 1998); Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Mandarin Chinese, 2000);

There were some nominated for best picture but not best foreign film oddly

Grand Illusion (French, 1938); The Emigrants (Swedish, 1972); Cries and Whispers (Swedish, 1973); Il Postino (Italian/Spanish, 1995); and Letters from Iwo Jima (Japanese, 2006),

Grand Illusion is because the foreign language category had not been created yet and Letters from Iwo Jima is because it is actually an American production. I don't understand the others.

Also my problem with saying animation and foreign language does not belong in the Best Picture category is because it is called the Best Picture category not the Best English Live Action Film. When you say Best Animated or Best Foreign Language you mean it is only the best in those categories.

Best Picture however says it is the best film in all categories supposedly.

  11. Well the Best Animated feature is how I feel about the Best Foreign Film category. If we didn't have these categories then these films would probably never be recognized. However I also feel the fact that we need these categories show that foreign films and animated films are somehow deemed inferior to American live action films. It's a double edged sword to me.

Toy Story 3 was the best animated film of the year (which it won) but it was also one of the best films of the year out of all films animated or otherwise. It deserved to be nominated in both categories in my opinion.

Although its rare there has also been times where a foreign film was nominated both in the best picture and foreign category. A foreign film like an animated film has never won best picture

  12. I agree with you about the 10 nominees and Roger Deakins (for the person who asked he was nominated 9 times and never won.)

However I have to respectfully disagree with you about Toy Story. I have only seen 6 of the nominees but Toy Story 3 definitely deserved its spot and if anything it is a better film then both the front runners Social Network and The King's Speech. I really liked King's Speech (especially the great performances by Colin, Geoffrey, and Helena) but will it be remembered years to come. I am not entirely sure! However I am sure something like Toy Story will be remembered. People look down on animation as inferior to other types of film or something just for "kids". But the best type of movie can be enjoyed by everyone and Toy Story 3 is exactly that kind of film. I also have seen "kid" films explore complex issues like death, war, hatred way better then many an adult film.

  13. Last Airbender's awfulness goes well beyond obsession with 3D. No I didn't see it but I read enough about it and knew almost from the get go it was going to be horrible when I heard the changes they were making to the story and the cast they chose.

I loved the TV program it was based on and you couldn't take something so wonderful and turn it into something so horrible.

  14. I can't really comment much on 1971 since I've only seen The French Connection & Fiddler on the Roof. French Connection is alright but I much prefer Fiddler. I also prefer Topol's performance to Hackman's.

Still it seems Clockwork Orange and Last Picture Show (neither of which I have seen) are the nominees most highly regarded today.

  15. Sorry Johnny I am going to agree with the majority here. Dodsworth is a great film and should be remembered better today if just for Huston's wonderful natural performance.

The first time I heard about this movie was not because of TCM but someone on the Classic Film Board over at IMDB who said it was one of their favorite movies of the 30's. Because of that I was really looking forward to seeing it and it did not disappoint. Personally I am happy TCM is making it an essential because it is a real gem.

  16. I have to admit not knowing where the film was supposed to take place I thought it was set in the South or Midwest. Well I definitely didn't think the North.

I actually thought it was pretty good film although not as good as the Heiress which was also nominated that year (I have not seen the other films that were nominated).

Is this the Best Oscar winner? Definitely not! Is it the worst? Not even close.
