Until the technology becomes cheap & easy to use for everyone then it should only be an option not a requirement.
I can imagine telling someone's grandmother that to enjoy TCM she needs to download the movies from the Internet.
For the record TCM does keep up with current technology. They are on facebook & twitter. They have monthly Online Pod Casts. However unlike ABC or CBS they do not own the content they show. That is why they are not streaming their films Online. I expect that would cost extra.
If people want to watch Classic Movies online there are many legal titles on Netflix & Hulu+ and many illegal ones of Youtube. There are also a bunch of films that no longer have a copyright on the Internet Archive.

I was just thinking I wonder if anyone actually did watch Return of the King for the first time on TCM last night and if so what they would think because the film is so dependent on the other two in the series. I understand why TCM only showed ROTK because it is the film in the trilogy that won Best Picture but if you never saw the other two it is somewhat hard to fully appreciate the 3rd I think.
Of course I don't want to think about the complaints if they ever did show all 3 on TCM. I am definitely not suggesting it. lol
Besides while I don't through a fit like some people when the occasional modern film comes on I am much happier with the older ones

Do you also pay everyone else's monthly cable bill? I wish you would pay mine.

> I think IMDB is good for cast/credits/production details/etc. User reviews are hit & miss, more often the latter. The message boards are mostly useless. Few knowledgeable people and too many youngins who have just seen Sergio Leone's westerns for the first time.

I guess you don't hang out at the *Classic Film Board* over there. I think there are a lot of arrogant members there but they definitely know their film.

Hmm, I figured *you* would deny you ever played "Pretty In Pink" lol
My goodness is JonasEB TCM? I never knew! LOL

I'll defend LOTR as great films (because they are in my opinion) but personally it doesn't affect me if TCM shows them or not. I already own all 3 on DVD. I can watch them anytime I want of course I rarely do because they are so long. Thus despite loving ROTK I did not watch it when it just aired on TCM.
But ROTK did win the best picture Oscar and that is why it is being shown at 10:00 PM EST like the other Best Picture winners this month. They choose a large selection of Best Pictures from many different years from the 1st one Wings to the Lord of the Rings. I expect next year they will show some of the same ones again but many different ones too.

I don't always agree with Fred but at least he does actually talk about movies he enjoys. You however seem to have just joined this website to complain. There is nothing sensible about that.
I love old classic films but I am pretty sure the Lord of the Rings films will be remembered 20 years and even 50 years from now because they are based on a very famous & beloved Classic fantasy story from the 1950's. The films successfully captured the essence of these novels. And I was a fan of the novels first. There was much more to these movies than the CGI.
While the majority of films shown on TCM are from the studio era the channel has been showing the occasional recent film since its creation (no they did not play 2000 films in the 1990's however). So there is nothing new here. There has also always been more recent films in Oscar month. Again nothing new here. But I guess the complaints are nothing new either. They are getting old however.

I don't want to even think of RO's replacement but I have no problem with Baldwin co-hosting the essentials. He is obviously a classic film aficinado and he does have chemistry with Osbourne.
That being said I would love if Scorsese could somehow co-host the essentials. I am sure this would never work out with his schedule but his love of films and knowledge is also wonderful. Has he ever been chosen as a guest programmer at least?
Actually a month of film directors as guest programmers like they did with the film critics would be really neat.

Lord of the Rings is the type of film that would not have worked without CG. I love the book and I honestly thought it wouldn't work but Peter Jackson pleasantly surprised me.
However most films do not need the amount of CG that is used. CG is fine when it is used to enhance a good story not in place of a story.
edit: However I disagree about Pixar. I do love 2D animation (which is why I am happy Studio Ghibli sticks with it) but Pixar is definitely the best at CG animation. There is a sense of magic in their films and more importantly there is always a good story.

I liked the idea of the story but it didn't seem focused enough for me. The 3 friends' stories was too much for 1 movie or at least what they tried to do with them.
But the roller skating and trash can dance were amazing. Worth watching for that!

Criterion definitely has the rights to City Lights and all of Chaplin's films. They just announced The Great Dictator for release in May. I expect City Lights will be their next big Chaplin announcement.
Modern Times is also now on DVD. And The Immigrant is included as an extra on Au Revoir Les Enfants.

"The most difficult shot, that kind of freaked me when I read the script, was the work just tracking with **** in the night. You think well, it?s a simple shot ? a shot of a horse?s head galloping ? but when you think it?s at night, and the horse is black, on this rough terrain? at one point we were actually considering, and got the effects company to figure out how they could do it as a completely CG shot. Create the horse?s head and the foam coming out of his mouth and everything else. We shot some tests and got something halfway decent in pre-production, but then we dedicated a Saturday night to doing some of this work. We built a road, a 1,500-foot road, in the cottonwood forest so we could track alongside the horse in this electric golf cart thing. So it was a matter of knowing how to do it. But the fact that we did it live had a much greater impact than if we would have done it with computer generated images. It just seemed right for the film, to do everything in camera."

But there was definitely some CG in the film such as the snakes and apparently they used CG to make the rivers look more dangerous than they actually were.

Fred what you don't seem to understand is all those things are suggestions. No one is saying that TCM has to or should play any of those type of films. But I don't see anything wrong with people making suggestions. Maybe TCM does get an idea from those suggestions, maybe they don't.
I never support when people complain that TCM doesn't show enough of these films. I think that is wrong. But I also think it is wrong to say that people cannot make suggestions of types of films they would like to see on the channel. Those long list of suggestions you posted do show that there are many different types of fans who watch TCM but it doesn't mean TCM has to honor every suggestion. Of course it would be impossible for TCM to satisfy everyone all the time.
There is also difference between saying it would be nice if TCM plays more Westerns (fine) to TCM sucks because it doesn't play Westerns every Tuesday.

LOL that is one of my favorite TW episodes. Just thinking of the ending makes me tear up. Probably one of the cruelest endings in history. I hope that vague comment doesn't spoil anyone.

Thank you Jonas for the information

Anyways I watched Street Angel today and enjoyed it. Gaynor & Farrell were really good and they had great chemistry. The film did get a bit melodramatic for me at parts towards the end but other than that I enjoyed it. Loved the scenes at the circus especially.
This film also had a really nice soundtrack with certain songs being sung with words. I was impressed with that. I also liked that some of the music was the same used in one of my favorite films from the 30's Trouble in Paradise.

He wasn't trying to look like Errol Flynn he was trying to portray an Errol Flynn type character in the 50's. The fact that he looked old, drunk, and washed up means he portrayed the character perfectly.
It's fine that you like him in Lawrence of Arabia more or that you didn't like this movie but I am at a loss what was wrong with his portrayal. He *was* playing an old, drunk, and washed up character.

> I tried watching My Favorite Year, but it was too corny. Peter O'Toole looked like he was really drunk all through the film. He looked like an old man who would have fallen off the rope had he really tried to swing across the theater.
So you mean he was doing an excellent job of portraying the character he was supposed to be playing: A drunk washed up Errol Flynn type character.

I have the same type of DVD Recorder as you LoveFilmNoir. It can be frustrating when there are two things I want to record on different channels. This doesn't happen often though, the only conflicts I have is when Match Game is on at the same time as a movie I want to record on TCM.
Actually I would love to have a DVR for things I just want to watch not keep but at the moment I don't want to add another monthly cost to my bill. This is why I went with the one time cost of the DVD Recorder instead. But it would be helpful to have both I think. Because I don't have a DVR my DVD-R definitely gets a lot of use.

Well I would say 1968 for Lion in Winter but then I have only seen Ron Moody in Oliver to compare. Then again none of the other performances seem as well known today. Was Cliff Robertson really that good as Charly? I did read the book but never saw the movie. I did think Peter O'Toole was excellent in Lion in Winter. Even more so because he played the same character in Becket but was able to make the character different in Lion.
Peter O'Toole could have won for Lawrence of Arabia but then Gregory Peck was also excellent as Atticus I have no qualms with the Oscars that year as that was a tough choice. Jack Lemmon was also very good.
In 1964 it is tricky, although I love Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady, Peter & Richard were equally good if not better in Becket. But then I am not sure how to choose between O'Toole and Burton in that movie and I expect the Academy voters had the same problem.
1968 seems to be the year Peter O'Toole should have won. I am less familiar with his films in later years. I did enjoy him in My Favorite Year which I saw for the first time last night but he has certainly done better.
I have Ruling Class recorded and hope to catch that soon.

Although I generally really enjoy Laura; I actually think it somewhat falls apart in the second half when Laura returns. The idea of Laura is more captivating than Laura herself was.
Double Indemnity is definitely the stronger Noir in my opinion with great performances by Barbara, Edward and Fred. Barbara's Phyllis also happens to be my favorite femme fatale.

There is no vault and there hasn't been for a long time.

TCM is showing movies that won & were nominated for Oscars.
No Peter O'Toole never won an Oscar but he was nominated 8 times. This is a record. And really he should have won an Oscar.

Actually we will be seeing this movie LIVE in December. It is an Essential for Saturday December 24th,. So not only in December but it will air on Christmas Eve.

I really like Depp but I am sorry are there no Native Americans they could have cast? This is what you get from white washing Hollywood.
edit: Okay I see that Depp's maternal grandfather was apparently Cherokee. I suppose that is better than nothing.
