  1. What do you mean why? I said because I am a collector and I like how shelves look filled with DVDs and Books not everything on a hard drive where you can't even see it. If I have to keep everything on a hard drive I don't know what I am spending money for at all. Might as well just rent the videos or take the books from the library. There is no value in keeping it stored where you can't show it off. Maybe there is value for you but not for me.

And I also don't need to be told that everything is going digital. I worked in publishing & have a library science degree. I know all about it, it's still depressing to me.

I also don't mean that it is depressing that things are available for streaming or downloading. That's great if you just want to watch something. And I have been doing this for a very long time. But if I want to _own it_ I want the physical product not something digital.

  2. As a collector the idea of that makes me very sad. I do have some recordings off of TCM but I would rather have the physical DVD which looks pretty on a shelf. Mainly I try to collect Criterion though since there is more value for the DVD with the extras. It's a nice looking product.

Just saving something on a mini hard drive is practical but also pretty depressing. It's the same with the Kindle I guess. I still love my physical books but it seems people want electronic ones now.

  3. I only recently (about a year ago) got a DVD Recorder and this because my VCR broke (I don't have a DVR). This is usually how I move onto new technology when my old technology gives way. I mainly got it so I can record Match Game (my obsession that goes with Classic Films) but it has worked out great for TCM.

Not only can I now see some great titles that air late late at night, I can also record some of my favorite movies to keep. I never seem to rewatch them though because there is always something I haven't seen I want to watch first. :)

  4. I can play Region 2 DVDs and I have bought things from the UK before without a problem but I guess I won't know until I try. I am going to add those DVDs to my wish list on Amazon UK.

But hopefully TCM will consider playing Seventh Heaven soon (it won't be until after May at this point though).

Just to double check I am guessing this is the DVD set you mean right? :)

edit: Also do you know anything about this DVD of Sunrise?

  5. Gagman reviews for Street Angel are negative about the print on Netflix but no mention of this issue on Seventh Heaven. Hopefully they have the good print.

I will consider your suggestion about getting it from the UK however. Are you sure those prints are good? If I rent something with a not a great print it's one thing but buying something is a different matter.

The US Murnau/Borzage boxset however is way beyond my price range right now. Actually I think it is a shame those films are now only available in an expensive box set.

  6. Going My Way is by no means the worst Oscar Winner not even close. I actually thought it was pretty entertaining movie and no worse than something like You Can't Take it With You which is also overly sentimental. I think a lot of Oscar winners have that issue actually.

That being said it didn't deserve to win. The Oscar definitely should have went to *Double Indemnity*

  7. I am not actually suggesting that TCM play animated movies but if they ever consider might as well give them suggestions.

I didn't have the channel when they did the Miyazaki fest. I wish I did but then I guess it doesn't matter now since I have most of the Studio Ghibli films on DVD including the wonderful Only Yesterday (directed by Takahata) which remains unlicensed in the US. I am glad TCM did show these films at one time though and introduced people to these movies who might not have watched them otherwise.

As for people complaining I think that is never going to change. :)

  8. My favorite complaints are the ones when people say TCM might become like AMC. They are complaining about something that hasn't even happened yet.....no may never happen.

No one knows the future but I say let's just enjoy what we have now.

  9. Well TCM does celebrate birthdays quite often. In March a whole month will be dedicated to Jean Harlow's centennial. And throughout the year films are scheduled for birthday tributes.

But when someone just dies it makes sense for TCM to do a tribute as well. It's not emphasizing their death but celebrating the life they lived.

However I just realized why they decided to make the tribute on May 23rd. That would have been Betty Garrett's 92nd birthday. So in this case they are doing a bit of both.

  10. Seems a lot of my favorite celebrities had big egos. I can understand part of Kelly's ego but also Donen wanting to strike out on his own and he was certainly very capable on his own.

From the interview with Kelly in 1978 I would expect there were no hard feelings between him and Donen if there ever were when their partnership ended.

Speaking of Donen I would love for TCM to air his private screening again because I didn't get to see it. Here is a quote from that on their partnership

Donen acknowledges that, although he and Kelly were close friends, the task of co-directing could be difficult: "Would you like somebody sitting behind you saying, 'Don't say that. No. Try it this way'? And you have to convince them. It's tough."

  11. Exactly I agree with you (well except for Star Trek and Star Wars being that special of a phenomena when it comes to creating a fandom) but as I pointed out before there is a big difference between dressing up in costume & dressing up as pertains to your regular wardrobe.

I really don't see how Pretty Woman affected today's fashion all that much. If anything I think what Julia Roberts wore after she became more fashionable would be more popular than the clothes she wore in the early part of the movie.

And I guess it is an unpopular opinion on here but I did enjoy that movie when I saw it (it's nowhere near a favorite though and I only saw it once).

  12. There is also a difference between dressing up in costume for a special event like a convention or Halloween and following the dress of a character for your regular wardrobe.

In the sense of dressing up in costume Harry Potter is not atypical at all: Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Anime, etc but I don't think you will see people dressed up as Wizard or Klingons on a regular basis. At least I hope not. LOL

  13. From Japan besides the wonderful Studio Ghibli films which are must:

Lupin the III Castle of Cagliostro directed by Miyazaki in 1979 before his Studio Ghibli days

Millennium Actress directed by the late Satoshi Kon (actually any of his films are worthy but this is my personal favorite). Kon's films show animation is not just for kids.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time this is the best animated movie you have not seen. It came out in 2006 and is just incredibly charming. The one film that I think deserved to beat Pixar but it came to the US to late and wasn't eligible for the Academy Awards. More people need to see this movie. I know it's not old but if TCM ever did something dedicated to animation it would be great if they could play it.

Not from Japan but as a kid I loved the following non Disney cartoons. The first one is especially a Classic.

    The Last Unicorn

    Land Before Time

    Secret of Nihm

    An American Tail

Anastasia (historically inaccurate as it is)

  14. Well maybe not 2,600 people but I certainly alert my friends when a good movie is on at a reasonable time (Prime Time). Most of my friends don't get TCM and only one that does really ever takes my advice so it's a bit of a losing battle.

I did get my friend to watch Sunrise the other week. She told me she enjoyed it.

I expect Battle of Algiers was a hard sell because it was on early in the morning.

  15. Hey I never saw the film so I can't say but reviews from critics and viewers seem to disagree with you about the plot:

This is the tagline for the movie on Rotten Tomatoes:

Though Steven Soderbergh succeeds in emulating the glossy look of 1940s noirs, The Good German ultimately ends up as a self-conscious exercise in style that forgets to develop compelling characters.

I have no problem with new movies but one that gets a 32% on RT and a 6.1 on IMDB doesn't really seem worth seeing to me.

Also I have seen plenty of movies based on books where the book is great but the movie is anything but.

  16. I read an interview with Kelly from 1978 and he had nothing but kind words to say about Donen and what a good team they were together. Kelly said by the time they did It's Always Fair Weather they just became so used to each other that they no longer needed each other.
