Sorry to butt into this conversation but Rudolph Valentino's voice (I guess it has nothing to do with Lang though)

Should voices be added to some silent movies?

The best example is The Last Laugh. I believe there is only one title card at the end. Sunrise (also directed by Murnau) has very few. -

Although most silent films had Orchestra scores even back when they were first made. There are some exceptions like I believe the Passion of Joan or Arc is meant to be completely silent. -
I think your post shows that there are a lot of different things people want to see on the channel. And I bet just as many people would complain if some of these things were shown on the channel. I am always open to new ideas but I don't complain because TCM doesn't show exactly what I want. Of course more foreign films would be a nice thing. I did have to laugh at the request for anime films. Besides Classic films, anime is my next big love. I know TCM has shown the Studio Ghibli films in the past (including the unlicensed Only Yesterday which is awesome) but for some reason anime films on TCM just doesn't fit for me. And it is not really hard to find other places to watch anime.

Happy Anniversary Fred! I am pretty new here but I am glad you can teach me about the good ol days of TCM.

Yes I could see Ginger getting a 24 hour tribute on her birthday possibly. Although they might wait until August. Of course I wouldn't mind if that day was for Lucille Ball because I actually have seen very few of her movies. edit: And one reason I want to see Ronald Colman as SOTM is because I have not seen any of his silents and that would be a good chance to see them. Clips from THE BIG PARADE have been posted many times, and they are repeatedly taken down after a short period of time. I am more interested to see if I like it more than Sunrise & The Crowd two of the films it beat for best picture (well I guess Sunrise did win the Unique & Artistic award). I actually had Wings saved to watch on my youtube queue for awhile but now I am really glad I waited so I can watch it on a bigger (albeit not huge) TV screen. -
I don't think it is necessarily the short look just the style. Thinking about it I am not a big fan of the 1950's style that much either but I love women's hair in the 20's and 30's and popular styles tended to be on the short side.

Who was actually better: STREISAND or HEPBURN?
Kinokima replied to MyFavoriteFilms's topic in General Discussions
I don't know about Hepburn VS Streisand because I have not seen Funny Girl and it isn't really fair of me to compare (although I do love Hepburn in A Lion in Winter). But I totally think the Oscar should have went to O'Toole. How could he never have won a competitive Oscar? Although in some ways I think his 8 nominations must count more than some people's 1 Oscar to show what a great actor he was. 1968 was a dreadful year for the Academy to begin with. I mean somehow Oliver walked home with the Best Picture. -

Thanks for the clips Fred but Wings will be a first time viewing experience for me tomorrow and I want to save everything from the movie for then. -

Title cards were often added after the fact. They were not necessarily added in place of dialog (and when the people's lips are moving they are not necessarily even saying the words on the card) but perhaps to give the viewer the gist of what was going on that maybe you can't say with visuals but I never think these title card over take the picture. I do like when my silent films have less title card as possible (it is also why I love Murnau so much) but I can tell you that adding voices or even voice over narration (although that is the lesser of the two evils) would take me way more out of the picture. Case in Point: Chaplin adding narration to his movie Gold Rush while interesting because it's Chaplin completely removes me from the picture and adds too much exposition. Although in that case I think Chaplin added more narration than was on the original title cards (I don't complain about this because it was Chaplin's own work to do what he saw fit, I just enjoy the film without the narration more). -
Actually the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is upcoming for this season. It will be during SUTS so we are assuming either Wayne or Stewart will get a day this year (who knows both of them may get days).

I agree Miss Wonderly if a silent film cannot be appreciated as a silent film than I don't even see the point of getting younger people to watch it because you are missing the major aspect of what makes silent films so special: The absence of speech but just the visuals and music to tell a story. -
Yes color looked much more vibrant to me in old films. I expect now what ever process is used is much cheaper. I like watching old movies/TV shows that take place on airplanes and noticing all the leg room that we no longer get. I was watching A Fish Called Wanda the other day (which isn't even that old) and I don't think the airport scene would work at all in today's environment. Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 5, 2011 2:33 PM

The 10:00 PM films are also all the Best Picture Winners. My guess is they are putting these on at 10 EST instead of 8 because it is sort of still prime time on the East Coast but not too late or early in other time zones.

Well if you mean you chose a different photo...otherwise everything you did was correct. I think it should work with any photo. Try it with something that didn't work before. If you scroll over a photo on Photobucket you will see "Email & IM, Direct Link, HTML Code, & IMG Code. On this site you always want to use just the Direct Link with the exclamation points you don't need any of the extra coding (it is different on other sites. On most blogs you need the HTML Code and on other message boards you usually need the IMG Code) -

I don't think Ginger Rogers will be SOTM in July since she was just SOTM this past March 2010. It does seem odd they didn't wait for her Centennial to make her SOTM but I can't see them choosing her again so soon. She could very well be chosen for August SUTS though. -
Definitely some great choices this year but especially Bicycle Thieves. I love that movie and I am really interested in hearing their thoughts on it. It is definitely an essential. I also have yet to see the following: Hannah and her Sisters, The Loneliness of a Long Distance Runner, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, The Misfits, & The Cat People so I will be looking forward to them all (although I am not sure how I feel about an 80's movie chosen as an Essential). And with Love Me Tonight I hope they make a point to say see there were great musicals before 42nd Street. Also really cool they got Miracle on 34th Street for Christmas

WESTERNS: why such a love 'em or hate 'em genre?
Kinokima replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
I actually do like Butch Cassidy but that is definitely not your typical Western. I would say that probably is a Western to appeal to the female demographic ahem. I admit I have a weak spot for "buddy films" which is what I consider it more than a Western. I don't often agree with IMDB genre top lists but it is probably the most popular film site. But that list might be a little outdated. This is the current top Western list on IMDB. http://www.icheckmovies.com/list/western/ The Sergio Leone films are still in the top 2 but they are pretty popular. -

Definitely no! It would be like adding color to B&W films except even worse
