  1. Glady's Cooper always plays that type of overbearing mother well. She also did great in Now Voyager. Although I didn't see Cathleen Nesbit as so much playing a snob but someone who couldn't stand up to Cooper. Kerr was marvelous and I am sorry she never won a competitive Oscar. One of the Academy's many mistakes. The more I watch of Wendy Hiller the more I love her too. She is another actress I would love to see for 2011 SUTS.
  2. > {quote:title=LonesomePolecat wrote:}{quote} > I ADORE the Marx Brothers!!! But not their films past Day at the Races. I think they are so funny. Wordplay, slapstick, and musical humor! Hysterical, clever puns, innuendo, and instrument playing too. Oh how I love them. > > But I know lots of people that don't get the jokes, aka think the jokes are funny, so they hate them. > > Therefore it would seem that the Marx Brothers polarize people, doesn't it? Interesting.... I think a lot of comedy is polarizing actually but I think you and Miss Wonderly covered what I love about them. They really are not just one thing. They cover so many different types of humor in each of the brothers personalities & quirks. They are a great mixture of both visual humor and humor that relies on words. They are wonderful!
  3. > {quote:title=redriver wrote:}{quote} > When I was young, impressionists still did Gary Cooper and Kirk Douglas. Now they'd be wasting their time. Nobody knows what they sound like! What voices do impressionists copy anymore? Everyone would be so boring!
  4. I couldn't believe that Ronald Colman has never been SOTM so I checked and you are indeed correct. That is just a travesty. I might have to start the Ronald Colman for SOTM campaign soon well if no one else beats me to it!
  5. Well Katharine Hepburn was SUTS last year so 8/6 could also be Ginger Rogers or even Lucille Ball. 8/13 could be Stewart but also Wayne 8/20 Taylor was last year but maybe Clift or Winters? edit: Also YES to Ronald Colman. Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 4, 2011 3:07 PM
  6. That is one of the things I like about old films. I wouldn't say that they all talked funny but I loved that everyone sounded so distinct. Now everyone (for the most part) sounds pretty much the same and it is quite boring for me. You listed some of my favorite voices: Bogart, Stewart, Cagney, but also Lorre, Grant, and well anyone from the UK but especially Mason & Colman. Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 4, 2011 9:25 AM
  7. What I wrote was just a suggestion of something weekly TCM could do However I know TCM does their "race in Hollywood" series (not sure if they will have it this year). *I actually think it would be nice if that could turn it into a regular weekly thing like Imports or Silent Sundays but dedicated to positive portrayals of minorities in film*. They could also show films of minorities behind the camera too. How you twisted or misinterpreted my words: The 'race in Hollywood' series was in May last year, and each year they focus on a different group. It is not fair to tell African American viewers they should keep checking back for five years before the African race is featured again in one of these series. Nowhere did I say African Americans should have to rely only on the yearly Race in Hollywood Series to see their films. All I did was make a suggestion of how more programming for minorities can be added to the schedule on a more consistent basis. As for my arguments being flawed just because I disagree with you..... edit: And yes I edited some of my replies to add things but I never changed the intent of anything I said. I have even admitted when I was wrong on this thread such as when I said February was chosen randomly. Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 3, 2011 6:37 PM
  8. MFF why do you constantly try to twist what I say or do you just not read carefully? I don't see how I was telling anyone to wait a number of years for TCM to highlight their group. What I suggested was maybe TCM could do a *weekly* series of minority representation in Hollywood. I also mentioned I would be thrilled about a retrospective of African American films at any time of the year. The only thing I have said is it does not have to *only* be in February even though I understand why Aretha would want this type of thing in February the fact of the matter is Febuary is a weird/special month on TCM and they do not follow their regular programming schedule: There are no birthday tributes, no holiday celebrations, no Silent Sunday, No Imports, etc. So they are definitely not signaling out Black History month in February. 9. I am all for an African American film retrospective. However I know TCM does their "race in Hollywood" series (not sure if they will have it this year). I actually think it would be nice if that could turn it into a regular weekly thing like Imports or Silent Sundays but dedicated to positive portrayals of minorities in film. They could also show films of minorities behind the camera too.
  10. There was a reason February was chosen of course so I shouldn't have said it was random (many events happened in Feb such as the birth of DuBois & the 15th Amendment) but I don't think the month itself is what makes Black History important. The History of the Black people in America happened all year round. And I know for a fact there is criticism that Feb is the shortest month of the year. edit: I am also not trying to say the month itself should be taken away but I do feel Black History should be celebrated more than once a year. That is why *if* TCM celebrates Black History another month I don't see this as a bad thing. It would be good to see that Black History is not forgotten once February is over. 11. Look at Artuo's post? I am going to be silly and quote myself Maybe one day that will change but for now that is how it is. Yeah I obviously said that it can never change.
  12. But you do realize February has nothing to do with Black History at all. It is just a random month chosen. There is also pretty much a month chosen for every minority group. But I think these months while nice in theory take away from the fact that people's heritages can be celebrated all year round not just one month a year.
  13. > {quote:title=MyFavoriteFilms wrote:}{quote} > > And to use your argument, we could do a month of Oscar films in June or July...yes? LOL It doesn't really matter to me when TCM celebrates Oscars or if they celebrate it at all except they have been doing this pretty much since the channel started and people should expect it. It is not a new thing and TCM does not do it to purposely forget about other events that happen in February including Black History month You're right...they would complain if Black History month was celebrated in the summer on TCM because that would seem odd and out of sync with the way it is commemorated in our society. Well that would just be pathetic and I don't think anyone with an ounce of sense would complain about something like this. Black History and Achievements should not be regulated to only one month a year. The month should not be an issue at all. We should be able to celebrate Black History any time of the year as much as we want. It does not have to be regulated to February or only one month of the year. Black History is not about the month of February but about Black History.
  14. > {quote:title=MyFavoriteFilms wrote:}{quote} > > And again I don't see what the big deal is because Black History can be celebrated any time. > > I think a lot of African Americans would disagree with that statement. It's like saying that Kwanzaa should wait till June. Kwanzaa like Christmas and Hanukkah is an actual holiday. Black History Month is not. To say we can *only* celebrate Black History one month a year is absolutely ridiculous to me. So if TCM decided to celebrate Black History in July viewers would actually complain because it is not officially Black History month. For the record Black History is celebrated in October in the UK so it goes to show how important the date actually is. Edited by: Kinokima on Feb 3, 2011 1:21 PM
  15. First of all there are black themes films on this month. Perhaps not to specifically celebrate Black History month but it is not like there are no black themed pictures on: The Defiant Ones is on this month and so is Ali (which I believe is a premier). Perhaps there is more that I am missing.... I also don't understand what is so special specifically about Amistad that should be the one film that is shown every year to celebrate black history month. You mention Ben-Hur (which I am not a big fan of) but I expect that is shown more often because you know it actually won _Best Picture._ I don't think Presidents Day or Chinese New Year are more important than Black History Month but I certainly think they are just as important. But neither of these things get celebrated in February either. Everyone is saying they can dedicate a day of Oscar films for Black History Month. Well they can also dedicate a day of President Oscar films and they can also dedicate a day of Oscar films to Chinese History. And they can also dedicate a day of Oscar films to every birthday that happens in February that people want celebrated in February. And maybe they will do this for one of the Oscar months. But the point is this month changes every year. So just because one year they do a day of Black History Oscar films doesn't mean they have to do it every year or they are ignoring Black History month. And again I don't see what the big deal is because Black History can be celebrated any time. It doesn't have to just be in February because that is the official month. And in fact it shouldn't just be in February. I don't think it is ridiculous to say it would be nice if TCM shows more films dedicated to Black History or Race Films but I do think it is ridiculous to say it has to be in February. It is like you are saying oh no we missed Black History month now TCM can't celebrate these films at another time. And that's just silly to me.
  16. For *years* now February has always been 31 Days of Oscars and August has always been SUTS. These are special things on the channel that people have come to expect. No they don't have to do it that way but I don't see why they should change it either especially since they are two popular months on TCM. There is no rule that says Black History can *only* be celebrated in February. TCM can celebrate Black History, Race Films, the Civil Rights movement and so forth another month. It doesn't have to be February. Heck there are a lot of things that happen in February. Chinese New Years is during that month too. There are several birthdays including the Presidents Day etc. If they start accommodating all these things in February then 31 Days of Oscars is no longer 31 Days of Oscars and it just becomes like any other month (maybe some people wouldn't mind that). But the point is February is not just like any other month on TCM. It doesn't have Multiple Themes, it doesn't have the SOTM, it doesn't have imports or silent sundays, etc. It has always been a month dedicated to Oscar History. Maybe one day that will change but for now that is how it is.
  17. Oh I especially love the one with Lang & the Monkey. But the one with Lang drinking his coffee reminds me of one of my favorite Lang quotes Q- How do you like your coffee? And Lang replies Black Like My Soul
  18. Oh Anna May Wong for SUTS would make me totally happy. I really hope TCM takes her into consideration. Gloria Swanson would be really cool too.
  19. This is one I definitely do not want to miss. Niven, Kerr and Hiller I love them all.
  20. > {quote:title=Arturo wrote:}{quote} > Every month (except maybe February and August) it seems TCM has more than one theme going on. A Star of the Month every Tuesday or whatever, another theme on Thursdays. Why can't TCM accomodate Black History Month AND 31 Days of Oscars during February. Say, every Tuesday and Thursday during primetime program those black-themed films that may have had one (or more) nominations and/or wins. There should be enough out there to fill the month. How hard can that be? Seems like a win-win situation IMHO. Exactly every month *except* February & August. It is not like TCM is purposely ignoring black history month just like they are not ignoring anyone's birthday in February & August. But SUTS and 31 Days of Oscars are regularly scheduled special things on TCM. If TCM does what you say then they would have to also accomodate those birthday tributes every February and August too somehow. They can celebrate black history another month. It doesn't have to necessarily coincide with the official Black History Month.
  21. I always felt Audrey Hepburn and Jack Lemmon would have been an interesting team up. Paul Newman would have been great too!
  22. > {quote:title=misswonderly wrote:}{quote} > How come so many people (even many on this thread) don't like the Marx Brothers? I don't get it...what's not to like? I guess comedy is just very subjective. It's probably the most subjective thing out there. But I adore the Marx Brothers and as I said they were what originally inspired this thread. I also love Harpo on his harp. Harpo's autobiography is definitely on my to read list this year.
  23. > {quote:title=drednm wrote:}{quote} > > 6) Favorite musical number not featuring Astaire or Kelly > > June Allyson and Peter Lawford in "The Varsity Drag" from *Good News*. If we are talking dancing mine is probably Deborah Kerr & Yul Brynner dancing to "Shall we Dance" in the King and I. I also think King and I has the best dubbing (Deborah Kerr) in a musical. I also love the dancing during "To Life: in Fiddler on the Roof. If we are talking songs in musicals without Kelly or Astaire well that is a little more complicated. It will probably be something from Fiddler again because that is my favorite musical. Oh and without Astaire I also love when Ginger opens with "We're in the Money" in The Gold Diggers of 1933 "Isn't it Romantic" from Love Me Tonight is also quite lovely.
  24. > {quote:title=rosebette wrote:}{quote} > Maybe this is a silly post, but as a New Englander, pleasant thoughts of Errol, adventure, and romance are one way to beat the winter blues! If TCM ran a marathon of those flicks right now, I'd be happily in my PJs with a pile of snacks under a down comforter, parked in front of the set. I definitely wouldn't be opposed to that
  25. Aretha I understand your point and I wouldn't mind if TCM shows more films in general that deal with black heritage. I am especially interested in seeing more race films in the future because I don't know very much about them. A month dedicated to these type of films would be really neat. However February is *always* 31 Days of Oscar so unfortunately you are never going to see films in February dedicated to Black History Month. It's the same when people say why does so and so's birthday never get celebrated on TCM in February. This is a regular special thing with TCM just like August is always Summer Under the Stars.
