I am hoping for at least one movie with his daughter Hayley too (I only recently realized he was her father)
I am also hoping for In Which We Serve because I loved it last time I saw it but didn't get to record it at the time.
Hobson's Choice would also be nice, okay now I am getting greedy.

Oh yay John Mills, I am looking forward to that day!

I hope they play some good silents on the John Gilbert day!
-
I would definitely love to see more foreign classics on TCM (and not just regulated to the graveyard slot). I think their birthday tribute to Kurosawa was one of the best things the channel has done & I would love to see more things like that.
-
Although out of all those stars I think Hepburn did have the greatest success in later decades.
-
I adore Katharine Hepburn now but not so much when I was younger. She was definitely an actress I had to grow into. She isn't traditionally pretty but I admire her for her personality and her intelligence.
As for my top 5 films she was in:
Bringing up Baby
Philadelphia Story
African Queen
Summertime
The Lion in Winter
And well I still have a lot to see. The only thing is despite their real life romance I am not a big fan of the Hepburn/Tracy films.
edit: And also honorable mention to Holiday because that film is just so sweet,
-
I really love how TCM does tributes but I have to admit I was upset that this was the film that had to be canceled since it was the one I was most looking forward to in May. I couldn't wait for it to be rescheduled so I ended up renting it from Netflix.

So I just heard GSN will be airing a Match Game marathon on Saturday May 8th focused on Betty White's episodes (I think it is to celebrate her stint on SNL).

I love watching Betty on those early game shows...do you like Family Feud? I like the ones with Richard Dawson more, b/c somehow he gets away with kissing every single woman on the show! Heehee! He's probably the only person who CAN get away with it.

>
I am a fan of Richard and he is definitely my favorite of the many Family Feud Hosts as well. That being said I am sort of somewhat conflicted about Richard on Feud because I know that is the reason he left Match Game and I liked him even better on there. But C'est la vie.
As for the kissing I don't think he could even get away with that today. I see so many people misinterpret it and think he is some dirty old man (well maybe he was but he was certainly a charming dirty old man if that was the case).

I am not sure of the exact date but I think sometime last year.

It's one of the best classic game shows too. Actually I was thinking the special guest portion (with all the great classic stars) might be a great fit for TCM. They could play them in-between the films.

*@ MissGoddess* Comparing GSN to TVLand is the perfect way to describe what is happening with the network.

I love it when they picked on each other on Hollywood Squares When Betty and Richard Dawson were regulars.

Match Game is the one with Richard and Betty (I am slightly obsessed lol) Actually here are two screencaps I recently took of them on the show (bad quality because it's from a youtube video)

What's My Line is sadly no longer on GSN. In fact they no longer have any black & white classic game shows on. This is something fans of these shows are very upset about.

It goes to show that TCM really is a haven for classic fans.
edit: Just saw your correction between Match Game & Hollywood Squares so excuse my post.

Yay I love Betty White so much and I am really happy to see she is just as popular as ever. She is like an inspiration still working at 88 years old and not even thinking of calling it quits.
Betty White was also a semi-regular on Match Game and appeared quite often (Allen Ludden was on the panel a couple times too).
Anyways if you want to check out Betty on GSN tomorrow is the perfect time. She will be on GSN Live sometime between 3-6 pm est answering fan's questions in between the shows that are being aired. Unfortunately the game shows that they show from 3-6 are pretty much the boring new ones (the classics are only on from 9-1) but it will be great to see Betty.

Also Match Game (11:30 AM-12:30 PM EST) & Pyramid (10:30-11:30 AM EST) are still shown on GSN but sadly Password is not so if you want to see Betty in an old game show those are your best bets.

Maybe it's just me but I certainly don't think Muni was not a great actor in retrospect. He gave in my opinion two of the best performances of the early 30's (Scarface & Fugitive From a Chain Gang). Now admittedly he didn't win for either of those films but I still think he had something.
He didn't end up doing a lot after the 30's and maybe some of his career choices were not the best but I don't think that necessarily reflects his acting ability.

How about something like *Ace in the Hole*. I think the whole media circus thing is probably even more true today.
-
I am not sure if anyone would be interested in this but as a tribute to *John Forsythe* someone posted one of his Match Game episodes on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNc4bxIqzQs (Part 1 of 5)
Here is also one for *Robert Culp*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Arc9axfNSjA (Part 1 of 5)
And I always wanted to watch *Rowans & Martin Laugh In* but I am most interested in the episodes when Larry Hovis & Richard Dawson were on the show and those seem impossible to find.

-
Well I wouldn't mind being able to sing like Julie Andrews!

And as a woman I can totally say while Cary Grant is good looking it is his voice I love most of all. But then again I am obsessed with voices in general. So I will definitely second Ronald Colman & James Mason as having sexy voices.
And though they might not be typically sexy I also love Bogart and Stewart's voice just because they are so unique.
-
Ooh theatrical release! Dare I hope it might be screened in Philadelphia?
-
I certainly would support this. I love the Criterion Collection. In fact about 85% of my Netflix queue comes from their collection.

-
Hugs! Aww thanks, I appreciate it!

> I had been trying to figure out what RL was. My only guess was that you had some affiliation with the "Rittenhouse Library", the public library just off Rittenhouse Square.
Ah no but that would have been nice because I am a librarian (and unemployed at the moment).
-
I guess for me I like the characters as they are presented in the books too much to want to see them depicted another way. I don't like seeing Watson as a comic foil because that is not what he is supposed to be. In fact Watson is my favorite of the duo in the original stories because he is so easy to relate to & likable. I just never feel any adaption really captures the real Watson.
As for Holmes when I say "weird" I don't just mean his cocaine habit. Holmes was very gifted in certain areas and flawed in other ways. One of those ways in which he was flawed would be the way he related to other people, which again makes his relationship with Watson so special.
As for the action hero part if they wanted to make an action movie call it something else. They can even be "Holmes & Watson like" but they don't have to be Holmes & Watson. I am just tired of everything having to turn into an action film. It's like Sherlock Holmes for the ADD audience of the 2000's.
-
Ha ha sorry guys RL stands for "real life" as in people I know off the Internet. I guess I have to be careful about what Internet slang I use on here.

-
I like Rathbone but I think even he was wrong for the part. He acted too normal as Holmes. I guess because Rathbone was the main character they wanted him to have certain admirable qualities. But in the actual stories Holmes while a genuis is basically an anti-social and definitely a little weird. That is what makes Holmes relationship with Watson so special because he obviously does not have the camaraderie with everyone. And if anything Watson is the normal character the audience is supposed to identify with.
I have yet to find a Watson portrayal I really like but I do like Jeremy Brett as Holmes.
-
if we are talking about French gangster films what about Pepe Le Moko with Jean Gabin from 1937.
And then a later one with Jean Gabin Touchez Pas au Grisbi aka Don't Touch the Loot where he plays an aging gangster.
-
Count me in as someone who has no interest in seeing the new film because I don't like how much it strays from the original source (and for that matter I hate Nigel Bruce's performance as Watson as well).
Quite honestly it bothers me that we can't tell a story without turning it into an action movie. Of course even in the story Holmes could "fight" a bit but the highlight of Sherlock Holmes for me was how he used his brains. Brains over brawns as they say. Turning Holmes into an "action hero" is completely missing the point of the original story.
I have also heard Hollywood has their heart on ruining Leonardo da Vinci next.
-
Oh I adore Tom Baker. He's probably my favorite too and my favorite arc was with him "City of Death" written by Douglas Adams. I also like the 3rd Doctor Pertwee.
As for the new series I still think it is really entertaining and I liked both Eccleston and Tennant as the Doctor (and this is coming from someone who can't stand most new TV series). Sure not every episode was good but that is true for the classic series too. The newest guy Matt Smith is off to an excellent start as well.

Could Movies Be Available on Demand 30 Days After Their Theatrical Release?

$20-$30 a movie, are they nuts? Mind you I don't go to the movie theater much anymore but the point of going to the theaters is the experience of seeing it on a big screen. I am not going to pay $20-30 just to watch a movie on my TV (even if it is earlier than its normal DVD release).
