  1. Once again mark, great wrap up of this week's programming.

I am looking forward to a pizza and the Mike Hammer films tomorrow. I caught *My Gun is Quick* over a year ago on Encore Mystery (they also would show *Kiss Me Deadly*. I remember liking it, but I have seen *Kiss Me Deadly* quite a few times since, and Meeker's "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" episodes, that I can't figure out which Hammer film I like better. Plus I also look forward to seeing Mr. Spillane himself.

  2. A new low?

This film is only being bashed because it is from 2008 and deals with rap music.

TCM has aired some terrible films from every decade....I still remember a weekend viewing of *Plan 9 From Outer Space*. Ben M couldn't even keep a straight face when he introduced it. I've seen some terrible films in the hour and 15 minute slots. Films that seem like they were made just to give contract players something to do. And no one creates a thread about them. They are okay because they are black and white, right?

It's not like this film will pop up on the schedule again any time soon. I don't understand why people can't just change the channel. I can't get into *Seven Brides for Seven Brothers* or *Dr. Zhivago* and I can't bring myself to create threads about the two films, which are aired frequently, I just change the channel. TCM has way more hits than misses for me, I can't speak for anyone else but for those of you who feel the channel has changed so much, maybe you should change the channel and find an alternative. But good luck with that.

  3. johnbabe, grow up and give it a rest.

Her SUTS day happens to be the 100th anniversary of her birth. TCM notices things like that. Now respect it. It's one thing to have an opinion and not like the work of an actor but please, be mature about it. Hissy fits because someone you don't enjoy is on the schedule makes you come off like the village idiot. Ball happened to be in some pretty good movies that aren't even close to her Lucy character, particularly her work in film noir - *The Dark Corner* and *Lured*. She, like Angela Lansbury and a few others, often have their contribution to film overshadowed by people who only remember them from their work in long running television programs.

Also, if you know anything about TCM and SUTS, you know that it is a month where viewers want to see B-pictures from these stars and TCM manages to accommodate this when they can.

Hi Kyle, do you think it is possible that they would create the TCM Remembers montages and bank them? I have always thought this was something that was done last minute. However, it is a time consuming thing, particularly when you take into consideration how many films they use for 1:08 and the significance of each clip. I can't imagine them having a vault of these for actors still alive. I wouldn't even want to know who!

When I saw what other sites call the "windshield wiper of death" my heart skipped a few beats, in my selfish fandom I hoped it wasn't a few of my surviving faves. The first clip was of him as a child coming through a door, and like another poster said, he's always looked the same so I immediately knew it was him. RIP Jackie.

cujas - as a fan of MSW (and a huge fan of Miss Lansbury), I always connect these golden era actors to her show if they appeared. I remember Jackie was in a 2-part episode playing her jailed brother in law. It was a nice episode.

  5. clore, I always enjoy your insights and once again I agree with you.

Last year, I think Woody Strode fell into this. Many of the films shown had him in bit parts. But still, it was glad to see him given recognition.

I too prefer SUTS. While some stars are used as what feels like filler, TCM will throw us a bone with a star who is barely on the network so we get to enjoy a day of their films. Gene Tierney was a perfect example of this last year with most of her films being Fox Films. This year another Fox contract player Linda Darnell will get a day.

In all my years of being a TCM viewer, films that I now consider to be personal gems and favorites were mostly discovered in August. Thank you TCM!

  6. I made DVD-Rs from TCM and FMC showings but would still buy if they came out on DVD:

IT ALL CAME TRUE (WB should have put this in that $70 Bogie boxset!!!)

    LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER

    THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS

    SUEZ

    UNTAMED

    THE UNINVITED

    THE GLASS KEY

    THE BRASHER DOUBLOON

    ALIAS NICK BEAL

    DESIREE

    PONY SOLDIER

    THE MISSISSIPPI GAMBLER

    THE LEFT HAND OF GOD

    VIOLENT SATURDAY

    THE EGYPTIAN

side note: if you look up most "classics not on DVD lists" The Uninvited and The Magnificent Ambersons always seem to make the list. Also, our most recent SOTM, Mr. Milland has several great films that are not on DVD.

  7. You sound like maybe you need actual audio of him using the nword against a black extra or giving an extreme opinions on blacks to believe it.

I'm not surprised he's racist and I doubt he was the only one. It was a sign of the times. If the studios were ignorant to some of these things, of course some of the actors were bound to be!

Yikes! I hope everyone is okay. Some of the footage I seen on CNN from the St Louis area including the airport is scary.

Too bad TCM never schedules movies around weather, but that goodness for DVR. Delmer Daves and Douglas Sirk are two film directors whose films are perfect to watch a whole afternoon and evening of when the weather's bad, sky is dark and you have something warm to munch on. I'll also add Vincent Sherman to the list.

    > Please stop playing silent movies, foreign movies, moves that have too much sex (should be on HBO), which is very disgusting and should not be played on cable television even though you show these movies late at night. You have changed your movies so much we are getting tired of TCM because of all that we have posted here, but we are paying for trash. Just look what you have scheduled on Easter Sunday out of all days, just horrible.

You wrote your cable provider to complain? With what, ink and quill? Oh please! If you don't like it, change the channel. Or, instead of complaining about the disgusting images on your screen after midnight, turn the TV off and do the grown up with your partner.

I actually am looking forward to Sunday's line up. I fear that if enough people like this poster in America have their way, our entire society will be censored beyond belief.

    > LOL, Fred is so old that he never approved of widescreen cave drawings. ; )

LMAOOOOOOO!! This thread has me holding my sides laughing.

I am enjoying the arguments from both sides, even though I am for original aspect ratio. I will say this though, letterboxing really helped to improve film making particularly for on location filming in Technicolor. David lean would have probably shot the desert scenes of *Lawrence of Arabia* on a sound stage and saved whatever tens or hundreds of thousands versus on location if there was no letter boxing.

One thing I will say is that there are some films that have black bars that are HUGE. I don't see them too often, but they are out there and pop up on TCM. The only widescreen film I have found a little distracting to date was *How The West Was Won* and that was because of those lines down the middle. I don't know if the version I saw wasn't the best restored copy but I remember the color on the right panel was faded compared to the other two and the picture looked a little curled. Weird.

Bhowani Junction is currently playing. The bars seem to be about 3-4 inches thick on the TV I am watching it on yet I don't think it is distracting from my viewing experience and I wear corrective lenses.

    > TCM, you were my favorite channel, I love watching classic movies, but lately too many movies are in Letterbox! I have a new large flat screen tv, but the movies in letterbox are so small that they look like a sliver, they just are not enjoyable to watch for me. I try zooming them, but that just makes the picture quality bad. What can I do? What is the point of having a huge tv if the movies only take up a sliver of it? Please bring back Full Screen. I wish there was some way we could have a choice and pick which version we want to see. I don't want to stop watching my favorite channel, but these letterbox movies are just too hard to see.

    ****.

    (cue TCM letterbox featurette)

  12. I recently caught Caprice on FMC and what a boring movie...and Doris Day is so attractive, but why did they choose that wig for her?

I watched the movie with Widmark and it was weird to see him in a light comedy like that, although I love his voice. Maybe they couldn't get Dan Dailey on loan from Fox?? Did Widmark have a mustache also? Doris Day had a career where she was the victim of some bad and/or cheesy scripts.

  13. Thanks for your synopsis on the schedule Mark, this is going to be a great week.

Am I the only person who has really enjoyed Milland as SOTM? Does anyone know if the availability of his films has anything to do with TCM making a deal with some studious to have more access to their archives (like Paramount?) if so, I can only imagine who is SOTM for Sept-Dec!

  14. This thread has made by weary, dreary, rainy day. Sadly I didn't record *Susan Slade* yet I did enjoy Joan last night in the melodrama that is *Daisy Kenyon* (even though I own it on DVD). I did record *Parrish* last week and it is on the DVR. I had others I planned on watching before it, but having remembered the juicy chic drama that was *Where Love Has Gone* a few months back, I may have to watch *Parrish* sooner (and see what the bad reviews are about).

  15. It may have been your settings. I had two thin black bars on my TV and the subtitles were not cut, nor were heads etc in long shots. The subtitles were easy to read. The picture didn't feel stretched out nor cropped. For a film that uses a steady camera, and has many background details meant to capture the viewer's attention, any cropping would have been very evident.

    > As mentioned before, the 1943 version of HEAVEN CAN WAIT is shown fairly regularly on Fox Movie Channel.

What does "fairly regularly" mean? FMC hasn't shown Heaven Can Wait since 2008 or even before then. I ended up buying the Criterion DVD. FMC airs films in cycles for months at a time then go even up to years (depending on the film) before they air it again. It's one of the cons of the channel.

  17. yanceycravat, as a watcher of FMC, I couldn't agree more. FMC picks about 20-30 titles and shuffles them in a vicious cycle for a few months. They don't even have a way to request movies and know your voice is being heard. All you can do is "contact us". They are millions of gems of films, whether restored or not, that they could play yet they will choose to play the same films over and over again. They also don't play tribute to deceased stars regularly although they played Cleopatra for 24 hours on a Sunday when Liz Taylor passed. Stars like Gloria Stuart, Paul Newman, and Richard Widmark all did quite a few films at Fox and didn't get recognized. They don't even do themes of their films, there is more emphasis on the between film filler dedicated to new releases and Fox Searchlight projects.
