When I watched Bob O and Leonard Maltin, I felt like I was eavesdropping on two old friends having a good time! I really enjoyed the intros and outros although through a glitch, I deleted SKYSCRAPER SOULS by accident. My dad isn't a classic movie buff, but he loves a good western or Myrna Loy. I called him and told him his favorite vamp was on in prime time. He expected to see William Powell as well, but nonetheless, he was grooving too!

TCM Retrospective subjects you'd like to see

TikiSoo, I believe as of 9:04 AM EST today, Mr. Landau is still with us. Ditto on your sentiments regarding how he is being remembered. I think the same with Vincent Price. -

The mini-tributes are "new" productions especially made for TCM, > where "Word of Mouth" sometimes seems to be excerpted from previous programs, perhaps even > "MGM: When the Lion Roars," which was produced for TNT, and aired there before the debut of TCM. I went back and changed the subject to what I originally had it at because I just turned on a recording and saw a retrospective and Word of Mouth back to back and they are two different things. What I was referring to was when we hear someone discuss a star while we see various film clips and still of them and they usually end it with "For Turner Classic Movies, I'm......" with their signature. -
This Hollywood leading lady guest starred in an episode where she attempted to plagiarize the work of her old friend, JB Fletcher in "Murder She Wrote"

Hilarious and spot on. Well written! I watched *The Prowler* 2 times in 2 days and you about covered it. I'm still laughing at "Foiled by a little unprotected dancing in the living room with the radio on."

Speaking of Jeans, what about that Jean Simmons. Her voice was lovely and she spoke the same in every part.

Ditto fredbaetz. I have heard great things about both films. I have seen neither. Universal owns the rights to these Paramounts and the premium cable movie networks - HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Encore seem to have the rights to air them (although they usually only air the "popular" choices of the pickings). Does anyone know how long this agreement will last? Or do we start hounding the programmers of those channels? Or does TCM have a Paramount rabbit up its sleeve for 2011?

Wonderly, I had to rename my thread because I think "Word of Mouth" may ring more bells. Yesterday, while watching something off of my DVR, I saw Chazz Palmenteri speak about Edward G. Robinson. It is clear that the two never met or worked together, yet he is still able to speak great things about Robinson's acting abilities and career. I would like to see more of this. Regarding Bob Mitchum, I actually figured he had one but it just didn't play regularly. Who better than to do his than Jane Russell or even his son, right? I believe Cary Grant has two with one by Tony Curtis. I really enjoyed the one Mary Badham did for Gregory Peck. I guess it does have a sweeter touch when the person speaking knew the subject personally. Mitchum worked with some great people who are still with us so it would be great to see one of him. Would love to see character actors get "Word of Mouth" pieces done on them. -
Film noir runneth over on the schedule lately

> {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > It now appears that Comcast only selectively shafted people in Philly. What have they got against me? I still don't understand what is going on with these cable companies or these channels. Dish is dropping some Fox channels (I believe FSN and FX) because they claim Fox charges ridiculous amounts for them. I'm not in Philly enough so I wish it were I that was shafted and not you. However, if and when I do decide to be permanent there, I think I may have to switch over to DirecTV depending on my channel options and pricing. -

Too much of a good thing is bad! Do you not get Encore Mystery? Also, I checked 2 weeks ago and I am still getting FMC in Philadelphia. -
*The Glass Key (1942)* is coming up on Encore Mysteries channel on October 17th at 4:30AM EST.

ValentineX, I'm glad you do! I am not to sure with Comcast and other cable companies but I am glad you have Encore Mystery channel. Do yourself a favor and keep a look out on their schedule, or even download it monthly from the website. Why? Because they show the same film over and over again but then they slip in a classic that is rare and only play it once in the month. Some months they play the Sherlock Holmes PD films, TOUCH OF EVIL and CAPE FEAR (1962) quite a few times and they slip in something rare. I once caught MY GUN IS QUICK (1957) and never saw it again. If Encore channels have access to the Paramounts of the 40s, I guess I should try and shoot them an email with a list of some other films I'd like to see. -

Surely you jest. -
fredbaetz, I agree. The story did take some liberties but definitely not with Mrs. Duchin which was a big part in his relation ship with his son Peter. If Hollywood had taken that type of liberty with this story where they had Novak throughout this film, she still wouldn't have had the chops to "carry" this film the way some people may think.

Every day TCM airs retrospectives in between films. While I enjoy hearing Paul Newman talk about Elizabeth Taylor, Carrie Fisher candidly talk about mom Debbie Reynolds, and Kevin Spacey discuss Jack Lemmon, there are several other stars I can't help but wish they had one....or if they did, it was played often. I thought of this tonight as I saw the one Chazz Palminteri do for Edward G. Robinson. I'd love to see one for: Edmond O'Brien (this guy should be SOTM soon) Gene Tierney Joseph Cotten Robert Mitchum Victor Mature Virginia Mayo Audrey Totter Van Heflin Claudette Colbert Joanne Woodward Dana Andrews If any of these actually do have one, and may not have aired in a while, please do tell! (I searched the site) What are some of yours?

For those with DirecTV, THE GLASS KEY (1942) with Brian Donlevy, Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake is being shown on Encore Mystery Channel on Sunday, October 17th, 4:30AM EST. -
I think the film is more for Power fans and or Eddy Duchin fans than Kim Novak. Any attractive female actress could have played her role in this film to be honest.

This movie airs on average once a year. It is available on DVD and Netflix if you do want to see it and not necessarily own it.

Interesting topic. I have to add that choosing to do a role where you will have to adopt a particular accent or dialect can sometimes really bring a performance to ultimate ham. I think this is the major criticism method acting got. I don't agree all the time, but I do have to say that accents can sometimes be so silly when adopted - silly in a good way or bad way. STAIRCASE (1969) with Rex Harrison and Richard Burton playing a homosexual couple. Here they keep their Brit accents but "jazz" it up - and when I say that, I mean they bit into every homosexual stereotype that was known at the time. To the way they walked, talked, made hand gestures, and their facial movement. Their accents camp this film up. SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME (1956) Paul Newman's "interpretation" of Rocky Graziano is not as celebrated as his other films. Personally, I like the film but I can see where people will see the silliness in how he plays the character - particularly speaking voice. On the flip side, I think Paul Newman's Southern accent in films like HUD, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH, and WUSA are pretty great. For a guy born in Shaker Heights, OH, he sure was pretty believable. Joanne Woodward on the other hand, was originally from Georgia so I guess it came pretty natural for her. I'm reminded now of THE LONG HOT SUMMER - Orson Welles must have given his hammiest performance in this film! Tony Curtis NY accent seemed to show through whatever role he was doing, even if only for one or two words. The way he says "father" is classic.

It's "Eddy Duchin" but I forgive you. And I love this film....then again I have a bias and love all things Tyrone Power. I also agree with you, that scene is pretty magnificent both visually and when you know what Powers had to do to pull it off without looking like he was trying to!

*The Eddy Duchin Story* is always fun....we don't always get to see Power on TCM even though I have never seen this film aired in the afternoon or in prime time and it's quite good. Someone page me when TCM finally gets the rights to air Mississippi Gambler. As a Ty Power completist, this film as well as a few others are killing me!
