But as far as this topic is concerned, Cagney, Bogart and Stanwyck are mine - but I have quite a few favs but these 3.....I just love them.

The film clips are always cleared for broadcast rights but perhaps in the ensuing years one of the clips rights changed hands or something. Thank you for this bit of info. I believe there are a few "Biography" episodes of some actors from the classic era that have not been re-aired by Bio or A&E because of this same issue. I remember reading on a message board that some of the clips included those that were part of an estate in a legal situation but I don't recall who the actor/actress was.

  4. Great Convo. I love Private Screenings! Kudos to Ernie Borgnine doing his in his 90s and still sharper than a tack in an elementary school classroom!! Does anyone have ANY idea why the Private Screenings for Rod Steiger NEVER gets airtime?
  5. He was super typecast. I need to do some research and see if there are any good bios of him out there (well credible bios). I know he was very good friends with Angela Lansbury from Dorian Gray until his death and they were neighbors in County Cork, Ireland for years after her encouragement. I wonder if his homosexuality had anything to do with his career not taking off.
  6. > {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > ...and I find that in the "Legacy" series, they apparently intend to rerun the same films over and over again. They did CAN CAN this past Sunday for at least the third time in the past month. If they own all these films, why the ****** don't they show them? While I love Can-Can, I can name at least 10 films I have seen on FMC that deserve the "Legacy" treatment before this film does (my opinion of course) and that have made a greater impact on movies. They really need to come a lot harder with efforts to promote these old films. Many people have Marilyn Monroe box sets and DVDs because she has been cemented into our culture as an icon but MANY Fox stars deserve not only the box set treatment but the prime time slot publicity....Betty Grable would be numero uno.
  7. One of my favorite films. I love Hurd Hatfield....a shame his career couldn't take off after this film. He was a great actor.
  8. The hamminess of the acting is what makes this film so great (oh, and the Technicolor). Someone once told me they find all of Power's swashbuckling performances to be hammy - I don't know if I agree with this. George Sanders definitely was in rare form but nothing like his role as "Shadwell" in *Psychomania*....I too would have probably taken my life shortly after the filming.
  9. > {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > It IS a low budget operation. I believe the expression is, "They throw around nickels as if they are manhole covers." And yet somehow it is considered a "premium" movie channel. I love seeing a gem here and there, I love that I can go here for my Grable, Ameche, Faye, Power, Payne, Dailey fix even though they haven't been playing many titles of all of them except for Grable and Power lately. They show many of their noirs that are on DVD and I wish they would play some of the ones that are less popular. I know they don't show films not on DVD because of the restoration. The George Raft-Vivian Blaine film "Nob Hill" is a faded print that comes on from time to time, but is obviously not on DVD. I say restore and lease - and release to DVD!
  10. In no particular order: Witness for the Prosecution Kiss of Death Somewhere in the Night The Maltese Falcon D.O.A. The Blue Dahlia Mother Wore Tights Houseboat Citizen Kane The Harder They Fall Honorable Mentions: On the Waterfront, In a Lonely Place, Heaven Can Wait (Lubitsch version), Night and the City, White Heat, They Drive by Night
  11. I was hoping for a marathon of his films too. If FMC is going to be somewhat uncooperative about the leasing of their titles, I wish they customized how they showed films from 6AM to 4PM including showing original trailers, clips from interviews, commercials letting us know these films are available on DVD etc. That channel operates like it is run from someone's basement.
  12. Happy Birthday Ty!!! Is it wishful thinking to hope that he one day can be star of the month? Especially for the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2014.
  13. Ninotchka was shown 2 times already in 2010. Once was in the 8pm time slot.
  14. Tony Curtis was in TARAS BULBA with Yul Brynner
  15. > {quote:title=Goalieboy82 wrote:}{quote} > i think there should be a fan week on tcm. the rule would be movies that tcm can show. also could have a day for people to show there own films. would like to have my movie shown at 8pm, its a ice hockey team movie i made aobut my ice hockey team, it runs 40 minutes and about 30 seconds (or there abouts). Something similar was done for their 15th anniversary celebration. It was quite interesting to see people young and old from all different walks of life introducing one of their favorite classics and talking to Bob Osborne about how they got interested in classic films etc. I would suggest you look into getting your film shown on public access or a channel like Sundance or IFC. TCM is strictly geared towards showing the classics....be it independent or studio released.
  16. The print of *The Hitch-hiker* TCM shows is watchable and one could get a very decent DVD copy from it as well. The entire film fits into an hour and 15 minute block. They last showed it in December or November 2009 in a block of films that also included *The Bigamist* and *D.O.A* (one of my top 10 movies of all time).
  17. > {quote:title=audreyforever wrote:}{quote} > I'm so happy to know Kathryn Grayson will get her day in August! :x > > *I really hope TCM can dig deep into the Fox films, you know, Betty Grable, Alice Fay*.... I can name about 20 or so films I have seen on TCM that are Fox in the last 6 months however I would love to see even more and particularly from the two you mentioned and Tyrone Power, Don Ameche and Gene Tierney....a majority of their entire body of work was done at Fox so sometimes it feels rare that it is ever shown.
  18. lz cutter, thank you for this thread! I can save your original post for reference.
  19. I love your list particularly because of the Fox Stars...the only people I would add to that are Don Ameche, John Payne and Cesar Romero!
  20. > {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > I believe he only completely replicated a Tommy Udo-like persona in a segment of O HENRY'S FULL HOUSE. And I can watch his segment over and over again just for his rendition of "De Camptown Races". Hilarious.

But she a popular classic film fan or else tcm would not hire her to promote their popular film classics. You hollywood elite can afford more than us average serious classic film fans to be a fan of both popular and unpopular they probably have no time for this it's understandable. Tcm is just plain greedy about serving us fans who are serious cause we make them money in long run Raquel Welch doesn't owe it to her profession to be a movie buff. She is free to do whatever she wants in her free time. Not everyone in the movie business will ever watch as many films and be able to discuss them the way Robert Osborne does. It is what it is so just respect it. If you are receiving TCM than it is obvious that you receive a cable package with many other channels. Please exercise your right as a cable subscriber and change the channel!
  22. Interesting...you may also want to add Betty Grable to the list...cute blonde, perfect legs, great dancer, good singing voice....bad mom...source: her daughters.... now that I think of it, Betty Hutton might fall under this as well... and I am guilty of having a hard time separating people's character from their actions - and even I am biased! Jerry Lewis is a disgusting human being to me. He's better off never making a public statement for the rest of his life...yet with all I have "allegedly' read about Grable, I still like her.
  23. > {quote:title=lzcutter wrote:}{quote} > *The Oscar* and *Eddie and the Cruisers* And I just love, love, love, love love *The Oscar* - it has to be the healthiest guilty pleasure I have!
  24. No trouble being started! I think a majority of people pronounce it how your mom does. Unless you're Kay Francis, and then you probably pronounce it Ty-wone !
