  1. Marlon Brando was in DESIREE with Michael Rennie
  2. There are quite a few "almost forgotten" noirs that need to be restored. The care of these films goes to the dogs once they fall into the public domain! I heard there isn't even a decent print of *Detour* available (if this statement is false, point me in the right direction PLEASE)
  3. > {quote:title=casablancalover wrote:}{quote} > Anyone mention my favorites, *Thelma Ritter*, Eve Arden, and Eugene Pallette? Shame on me for not including Thelma in my list! I can go on and on and on about this woman's talent. She saved the dreck *Boeing Boeing* with Tony Curtis and the hack Jerry Lewis from being a complete waste! Her supporting parts in films like *As Young As You Feel*, *Pickup on South Street*, *Pillow Talk*, *With a Song in My Heart* and she WAS the show in *The Mating Season*

I don't mean to undervalue the importance of the subject to those debating it, since what is important to one is unimportant to another. However, the debate has made me chuckle a few times. > > Just out of curiosity, I checked youtube for a Tyrone Power clip, hoping to hear him pronounce his name. He was on What's My Line as a mystery guest. Arlene Francis guessed his identity and pronounced it "Tuh-rone." Sure enough, the host, John Daly, pronounced it "Tae-rone" and Mr. Power never said his own name. Let the debate begin! By the way, the clip is quite entertaining (especially the banter between Ms. Francis and Wally Cox). I don't know how to link, but youtubing TYRONE POWER will do the trick. > > Anyway, I have one of those first names that is always mispronounced and misspelled. I no longer correct people and just accept any of three versions. Peterwarne - I know EXACTLY the clip you are talking about. He looked completely different with a beard! And yes, I recall how both Daly and Arlene Francis pronounced his name differently. When Witness for The Prosecution was an Essential, Bob Osborne pronounced it "Tuh-rone" I watched a Don Ameche interview from the 80s where he talked about his earlier days at Fox and he called Power "Tae" - now if I recall these guys were the best of friends. I don't think I remember hearing how Alice Faye pronounced his name. Also, I have a recording of his Biography special from A&E/Biography and his name is pronounced in various ways. I refer to him as "Tuh-Rone" in conclusion.
  5. Alec Guiness was on THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI with William Holden
  6. I think it may be hard for many character actors to have a whole month to them individually but I am all for having a Character Actor theme for a month (similar to the method acting in January) or at least several having their day in August. Some character actors didn't always get enough screen time, others worked under certain studios so even seeing their films on TCM would be a big deal. I'd love to see Lloyd Nolan, Richard Conte, and Anthony Quinn (he was a character actor during his early days at Fox) get acknowledged. I know Nolan wasn't versatile, but I liked him in noirs and he was pretty decent as Michael Shayne. Richard Conte was great in noirs as well and did so much for Fox....it was good to see him later in his career in films like Oceans Eleven and Tony Rome. Quinn must have played every ethnicity one could play!! I'd also want to see Cesar Romero, William Bendix, and Carmen Miranda be acknowledged....of course this would mean some heavy leasing of Fox titles (but worth being shown on TCM and discussed by Bob and the posters here!)
  7. > {quote:title=redriver wrote:}{quote} > My only caution buying from the "bargain bin" is when you find early films or public domain titles, you often get really awful quality, almost as if it was duped from a VHS tape. > > This is why I have TWO bad copies of QUICKSAND. You'd think one would be enough! Hmph! Well I'm trying to get my hands on one copy and think I am about to bite the bullet and order these $7 5 movie a set public domain sets...I think this one company is supposed to have "decent" prints. I have been trying to see Quicksand for a while.
  8. I think I will have to be adding this one to my cart! I have a few books and other items I plan on ordering from Amazon this week!
  9. it used to come on FMC quite a lot. I purchased it during an awesome Amazon.com sale for $5.99 and this movie was great - very suspenseful. The house in the film was beautiful. I definitely had no idea what was going to happen! And Valentina was just as beautiful as she was in *Thieves' Highway*.
  10. Finally finished The Egg and I (cute film) and I saw the Yaris commercial....I re-winded twice and laughed hysterically. Glad it was only an error and thank you everyone for your facts regarding demographics etc.....and thank you DirecTV for your mafia-like tactics - you know I'll pay anything for these channels!!!
  11. This thread is hilarious. I had no idea there was ever any debate on the pronunciation of "Chico"! Someone point me in the Tuh-rone vs. Ty-rone Power thread....I've heard his name be pronounced so many ways over the years....and I believe his friends nicknamed him "Tae"....I'm sure someone has to be debating this somewhere on the planet!
  12. Neville Brand in *DOA* and *Kansas City Confidential*...he just has a creepy look where you just know something shady is going to happen. Clifton Webb - in Laura and A Dark Corner he has an effeminate way about his evil that is so sophisticated, yet so evil.
  13. > {quote:title=ChipHeartsMovies wrote:}{quote} > Dougie, agreed re: Todd Haynes. As I just posted in the Hot Topics thread related to this, anyone who saw *Far from Heaven* (his wonderful modern take on the style of Douglas Sirk) can at least give this one a chance. > > Hopefully it will be period. Women today have many more options than baking pies. > > *The really pressing question --- WHO will play Butterfly McQueen's crucial role?* I don't know why this made me laugh. But in all seriousness, that role isn't even necessary today.
  14. Didn't Robert Osborne present one of her Lifetime Achievement Awards to her in the 80s? There is definitely nothing personal between he and Barbara. How could anyone not like Barbara Stanwyck?
  15. I think Carole Lombard was a beauty whether she was a soda jerk or a box office hit...her looks, and the personality that comes through the screen is just so believable. It is hard not to like her or want the best for her when you watch her films or any biographies on her....her death, imo is one of the worst in Hollywood. Her future potential in film and television was guaranteed.
  16. Great choice. Would have to show: The Boston Strangler The Mirror Crack'd to showcase his later career!

I understand where you are coming from. I think I am just being realistic regarding the changes that may come. I would like TCM to remain the same and I am willing to pay a little more for it if I have to in the future (I can always eat catnip for lunch at work! **sigh**). However, if there comes a time when the commercial-free is no longer an option, I would rather watch a film uncut and advertisements in the 13-24 minutes in between films. Yes, it will totally suck to see a Veet commercial in between Osborne's closing comments on a film and a trailer for "Bad Day at Black Rock" but it beats commercial breaks during the films (it would kill me and be the death of copies for home collections!!)
  18. > {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > A lot of commercials between movies wouldn't bother me. It wouldn't be much worse than seeing Nigel Lythgoe's tribute to Ginger Rogers for the fiftieth time. Just don't interrupt the movies for commercials. I think this is my opinion too. Just as long as they don't do away with shorts. But if at some point in the future I had to watch American Express commercials between complete commercial free films, I wouldn't die. It's when a film is interrupted or words/people appear on the screen as advertisement that drives me out my mind. Then again I am still keeping my fingers crossed for "only get the channels you want, and pay for them" cable programming....85% of my cable is a waste!
  19. Sue Lyon was in TONY ROME with Richard Conte
  20. They were all sexy! I think it was requirement to ooze sex appeal to make some of these plots believable. Ava Gardner in *The Killers* and Lana Turner in *The Postman* are enough to make a man lose his life or his freedom over!!
  21. A few: Cary Grant pushing Kate Hepburn to the ground in the first few minutes of *The Philadelphia Story* is a hoot! When Cary Grant and Sophia Loren are dancing at that outdoor/garden party in *Houseboa*t - that scene does something to me...so much chemistry between the two of them, Grant looked like he was ready to rip her clothes off. WOWSER! Cagney performing the title song in *Yankee Doodle Dandy* - that was some serious hoofin'! Creepy Mitchum in *Cape Fear* pointing out the "jiggle" on a woman to Gregory Peck - that scene was supposed to be super perverse for the time, but it cracks me up every time
  22. > {quote:title=arlenemccarthy wrote:}{quote} > Since the age of 11 I have worn glasses and since that time my lenses never fail to fog up whenever Ty Power, Bob Mitchum, Cary, Greg Peck, and Richard Widmark appear on screen. My specs also fog over when certains make their entrance. Do any other member have similiar occurances ? > > Edited by: arlenemccarthy on Mar 28, 2010 8:40 PM Honey, you appear to have good taste! I don't think I have ever seen a face more perfect on a male then Ty Power in his 20s. Pure perfection.
  23. To be watching a tv show and then the character from the show coming on next to just appear walking onto the screen is so stupid and distracting. USA, TBS and TNT do this endlessly with their shows. I try to enjoy an episode of *Law and Order* in syndication and right in the middle of Sam Waterston's closing argument here comes Kyra Sedgwick bombarding the bottom of my screen because she's on next!!
  24. High five for your Dana Andrews day!!! And Ann Sheridan as well (but you'd have to add I Was a Male War Bride as the prime time feature - I believe it is from Fox and you know TCM loves Cary Grant! lol) Great picks!
