What? I just saw a Yarus commercial on TCM!
LoveFilmNoir replied to cinemafan's topic in General Discussions
This thread reminds me of the dweeb in the 80s that some how cut into HBO's feed and broadcast some message. I recorded the Egg and I and I haven't finished watching it (it's taking me forever since I keep rewinding some parts to catch Colbert's forbidden side of her face hee hee hee) anyway, I'm figuring this is a fluke for the simple fact that the commercial was for Toyota - and a 2010 at that Peeee-ewwwww!! -
Too Hard to Choose...I want to say "DOA" or "The Roaring 20s" or "The Harder They Fall"....but that's only in the mystery/crime/noir genre. Very hard to choose a favorite of all time!

I don't know what it is, but my favorite musicals are all so obscure.....and I think I like them for the oddest reasons....am I the only one? -
Steve McQueen still "The King of Cool"
LoveFilmNoir replied to NamathGuarantee's topic in General Discussions
> {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > His first (and maybe only?) real romantic comedy (despite the abortion theme). Okay, thank you for saying "comedy" because I have categorized this under romantic drama-edy because I think there are elements of all three. Drama - subject matter. Romance - McQueen and Wood. Comedy - family relationships and some dialogue. Anyway, I can watch this film over and over again. I never get sick of the scene with the "doctor"....such a dark subject but once again, there is something about McQueen that makes the scene just too darn realistic. -
> {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote} > Helen Walker in NIGHTMARE ALLEY would be a good choice, that people wouldn't necessarily think of. She REALLY took Power to the cleaners. Helen Walker's performance was so great because she took the viewer to the cleaners as well! We thought she was a good-guy through it all!!

My wish list for Summer Under The Stars 2010
LoveFilmNoir replied to Dominick's topic in General Discussions
Your Don Ameche Day is amazing! The only thing is I would want to see "You Can't Have Everything" somewhere in there - great film. Your Van Johnson day is great as well - I would only subtract one (I wouldn't know where to start) and add "23 Paces to Baker Street" it is a Fox film so maybe it would be in prime time and is in letterbox. -
Loved him as guest programmer! Good to see an athlete stomping left and right on stereotypes or prejudices some probably had of him and were thinking when they saw the commercials. I loved the piece about his mama and the William Holden crush! Too funny!

Steve McQueen still "The King of Cool"

I can watch *Love With the Proper Stranger* back to back....he actually brings a level of class and "cool" to that whole dark subject matter...hard to put into words -
I am not too big on subtitled films (I can admit that) and I am still getting into them so I have taped a few of his works (I had previously seen Rashomon years ago in a film class). However, regarding stars of the month - I think I give up at this point. I love TCM but I know I will ALWAYS get my way. The Bogart month was my favorite month so far, although there have been some people saluted with their own month and I was able to catch some great films. I look forward to Robert Taylor for his 2 noirs - The Bribe and Party Girl - and a few dramas. I will always have my list of hopefuls (far fetched hopefuls) for SOTM

This is ridiculous. That blob of a long run on sentence in paragraph is all over the place. MikeMcgee, I'm glad you love classic films and appreciate the classics particularly the obscure gems. However, take it from me, appreciating the English language is also just as important. You don't know if there are any people on this board that are active and work in home video distribution for the big companies. How would they even know what the heck you were saying? If this was their actual website and you submitted it as a suggestion, who would comb through that paragraph? I'm going to assume that English may be your second language and advise you to relax, take a deep breath and then type each complete thought/point in one paragraph. What you wrote sounds like dictation notes.

TCM celebrates Peter O'Toole!! (March 20th)

Same here. It was Cooper. Gary Cooper is like licorice - an acquired taste (as far as his acting style is concerned). I think the same can be said for John Wayne.

Charles Coburn movies tonight! (March 11) Yoo-hoo!

Only I would add "Lured" and "The Lady Eve". He is one of my favorite character actors ever. He is a complete hoot as "Piggy" in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes! -
msbisonnet, your opinion, while (very) unpopular is your opinion and you have the right to express it! I made a thread solely for thoughts like this! Please feel free to contribute. Everyone is playing nice. http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=151453&tstart=0

Although they may seem cheesy today, I always enjoyed "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "On The Riviera. I recently watched Walter Mitty while watching a friend's children and they liked it. On the Riviera seems to be a cheap remake of Don Ameche and Alice Faye's earlier "That Night in Rio", the sets aren't convincing however you get Gene Tierney in Technicolor as well as the famous painting of her from the film "Laura" in color also!

Lorelai, I too am in love with Betty Grable. The only film I have seen her in on TCM (where she was the star) is "Three for the Show" with Jack Lemmon from later in her career. She was in The Gay Divorcee as well as other films shown but usually for less than a minute. If you have FMC, her films are usually shown regularly. Also, if you get HBO/Cinemax, they show older Fox films in the morning - at least once a day during 3:30 and 8AM EST. These are some of the films I have seen of hers from Fox Movie Channel, HBO and Cinemax in the last 12 months: Coney Island Wabash Avenue The Dolly Sisters That Lady in Ermine Pin Up Girl Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe Footlight Serenade A Yank in the RAF Moon Over Miami Down Argentine Way Meet Me After The Show How To Marry A Millionaire And in 2008: Mother Wore Tights My Blue Heaven Springtime in the Rockies Hello Frisco Hello How to Be Very, Very Popular I am waiting for her box set to go on sale before I get it. I hope they release a part two. I am still trying to learn how to go about getting a DVD burner and copying these films to a DVD because they are some great titles and the FMC and HBO/Cinemax programmers seem to really love Betty Grable (and Tyrone Power).
-
I love William Powell. I love all of his Thin Man work and I think he was absolutely wonderful in How To Marry A Millionaire. He is one of the actors of the golden era where I don't think I've ever seen him in a "not so good" picture.

I love Chicken Every Sunday! It is such a cute movie! Celeste Holm's narration is the cherry on top. I have always really liked Dan Dailey as an actor and performer. I really appreciated Robert Osborne's intro to the film when it was played in December. FMC used to play it regularly for a run along with other Dailey films during 2008 (wish they'd play When My Baby Smiles At Me )

> {quote:title=sbojangles wrote:}{quote} > Were they in love off screen? Are you asking this because you see sexual chemistry in their films? I can honestly say I don't. I just see two people who have chemistry as performers, nothing else.

> {quote:title=Hibi wrote:}{quote} > AWFUL. Well TCM didnt do a tribute after she died either. I'm still waiting on Kathryn Grayson..... TCM plays classics. In my opinion, it is not their duty. Maybe TV Land should have (or did) had something before they cut to commercial breaks. They did this when they had a 48 hour marathon for John Ritter's death and also Hallmark did this when they had a Golden Girls marathon for Bea Arthur's death. I think it was wrong for the academy to omit her though.

George Brent Birthday Tribute - March 15th

Yes, and I was very disappointed by this.
-
Wow....they omitted Bea Arthur as well? Shame shame shame. Is it safe to say that the people who put these together have some young intern or fresh out of college research associate behind these errors? There are so many great sites to get obituary info (like Hollywood Memoir). How pathetic. I am in the minority here but I VERY MUCH SO believe Michael Jackson should be included in any in memoriam tributes from 2009. His music was used for films, his music videos were successful mini-films. Who else had their 20 minute music video premiere in national prime time on Fox after The Simpsons in the 90s? A few years back TCM included Ray Charles ( I confirmed this via you tube) and he didn't act, but his music was used for film. He was practically an American Institution, just my opinion of course.

George Brent Birthday Tribute - March 15th
LoveFilmNoir replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in General Discussions
I always found him rather blah...can someone suggest a few films during his tribute day to introduce him to me? Keeping an open mind here, the guy has worked with some great actors and actresses. Thanks.
