  1. Movies set in Prehistoric Times range from serious and thought-provoking to sublimely ridiculous to a reason to parade women in fur bikinis. Quest for Fire (1981) and The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986) are the most notable examples of a serious approach to life and love at the beginning of civilization. Caveman (1981) is a personal favorite which throws paleontology and anthropology out the window and is simply a romp. When Women Had Tails (1970) and When Women Lost Their Tails (1972) are typical of the genre of loincloth-wearing mammoth hunters chasing women whose entire wardrobe was made from a single anemic rabbit. The Land That Time Forgot (1974) is a part of the genre which exploits the Edgar Rice Burroughs concept of modern people interacting with dinosaurs in pseudo-prehistoric manner. Animation ranges from the touching: Ice Age (2002) to the silly: The Man Called Flintstone (1966). Which flavor of movies set before the beginning of time are to your taste? Do you have a favorite?
  2. I would like to see a: Double Feature of: Gambit (1966) and: How to Steal a Million (1966). They share a basic sensibility because they were both made in the same year. They share also that the goal is to steal a sculpture from a pedestal which is surrounded by light beams linked to an alarm. They could not be more different in apparent budget and lifestyle. Gambit (1966) is tight shots in threadbare settings. How to Steal a Million (1966) is lush and embraces the splendor and vitality which is Paris. Even the vehicles are quite different: the former has a: Morris Minor 1000 and the latter: Jaguar E-Type.
  3. One Corpse Too Many by Ellis Peters aka Edith Pargeter This is the second novel featuring: Brother Cadfael but was chosen to be the basis of the first episode of the televised series starring: Derek Jacobi. The setting is: 12th Century England during Stephan's rebellion against the rightful heir to the throne. Cadfael was a soldier in the crusades and then a sea captain before becoming a monk and herbalist. His past is all of war and killing. His present is one of peace and healing. Historical murder mysteries are thin on the ground. I hesitated to begin reading this because some attempt to heavily inject the language of the period into the dialogue in order to bludgeon the reader into constant awareness that it is a story from a different time. I am quite happy to say that this author avoided that gimmick. There are a few archaic words here and there but their meaning is at all times plain. It is an easy read and it is not long. I bought it at a charming little used bookshop I found yesterday and am halfway through it after just a few short sessions between the things which I must do. I love the televised series very much. I feel now that the casting was excellent as it is easy to see the novel's characters as those actors. I have as yet found no great variance between the episode and the text. I believe this may be one of those very rare instances when it is good to see the production prior to reading the book because it makes the characters and setting easier to visualize while not ruining the story. The pacing is rather sedate and there is no gratuitous gore. It is much like a drawing-room-murder-mystery but for the fact that it is set several hundreds of years in the past. The series is available for viewing free with commercials on: IMDb.TV and tubiTV and the book should be available at any good library.
  4. Those wall lights/sconces make me very uncomfortable. They exactly mimic emergency lighting in secure facilities. I was in a bank many years ago when there was a power failure. Those lights came on as simple white light and then began to flash red. That was when all of the gates into the safe deposit box area automatically locked in response to a perceived threat. I believe that is not a ceiling fan. The arms are so narrow that they could not move any significant amount of air and there is a white globe on top of the end of each arm. I can only guess that it is a chandelier. I find it hideous but many might consider it art. I believe that it would not be good lighting because the 'wings' under the globes and the arms would produce overlapping shadows. This would distort the colors of the food on the table. A friend purchased an ultrasonic plastic welder at an industrial auction. The blocking which came with it produced strips of pockets in clear plastic sheeting. Each pocket was approx. one inch by four inches by twelve inches tall. She made two such strips about thirty inches wide and filled the pockets with a variety of beans and rice and attached them to the inside of the doors of the top cabinets in her kitchen so they appeared to be storage jars filled with staples. They were quite attractive and appropriate. I am sad to say that a few years later that she painted the glass so she would not have to climb a ladder to clean it each week.
  5. A common method is to reject the highest bid because they are looking for easy street and reject the lowest bid because they will cut corners. You then average the rest of the bids and chose the one which is nearest to that average because they are typical. We wish we could have gone with the lowest bid in this situation because the firm has a good reputation but the equipment they currently have available is from a small company with a history of quality control issues. The major manufacturers are giving preference of the limited supply to those who identify predominately as their dealers.
  6. We found many general cost suggestions online and averaged them. We then factored in that this area has a tradesman labor rate above the national average. We then added fifteen percent for contingencies. Our final budget figure was: $9,017 with an additional $2,620 available if absolutely necessary. We received five estimates for the installation. They ranged from: $6,300 to: $9,850. We determined that the best was the second-lowest because it is: 'national name brand' equipment with a reputation for reliability and because the installer has extensive experience. We then selected options in the estimate to upgrade to equipment which is more energy efficient and with longer warranties. We did this because our financial situation is frequently 'quite fluid'. That means that we are often up the creek. We feel that we are investing available funds now in return for fewer repair bills and lower monthly utility costs in the future. The final total is: $7,465. One may have a generalized image of: Little Fuzzies because: George Lucas directly stole the physical characteristics and renamed them: ewoks. I have heard the: "Fuzzy Wuzzy" poem. My Little Fuzzy is something of a bear but he is definitely fuzzy.
  7. I feel that way about many movies. Some of the more obvious example: A Page of Madness (1926) Tsirk (1936) The Story of a Cheat (1936) The Forty-First (1956) The Cranes Are Flying (1957) Daisies (1966) Two Comrades Were Serving (1968) The Irony of Fate (1975) All That Jazz (1979) Saawariya (2007) Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) Please do not look for parallels between them or attempt to understand why each have elements which have stayed with me even years after first viewing.
  8. From: Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper (1962): My Little Fuzzy is dark and not golden. His head is not particularly round nor his ears particularly large. His nose is much more than a snub. He is quite tall. These differences are minor compared to how perfectly he resembles the character in the book. He does often sit on his haunches and does have opposable thumbs. We both very much love this book and its sequels. The book is available for reading for free with no commercials at: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/18137/18137-h/18137-h.htm
  9. They are installing the new furnace and air conditioner next week. The estimate is more than fifteen hundred dollars less than we budgeted. We need more estimates for tree removal because the two we received were for more than four times our budget. We were not impressed that each drove brand new seventy-thousand-dollar Ford pickups. We thought to buy slabs from one of the local saw mills to use to build bookcases but they have none that are exceptional. I have met the local FBI agent and a weed wholesaler. It is becoming increasingly apparent that I will have to help a neighbor kill her husband if there is to be any peace on the block. The mail delivery may drive me crazy because it can be at any time within a three-hour window. The only practice ranges which I can find in the area which offer decent distances are members-only. The cable internet has been wonderfully stable even during storms. It costs exactly half of what we had been paying for service but is nearly five times faster. I know that I will survive this. I have no choice.
  10. This is to inform you that you are responsible for an incident of domestic violence. I searched my memory and could not recognize the allusion and my GoogleFU failed me. I was forced to ask my Little Fuzzy. He laughed and would not tell me until I hit him. I will write your name in red Magic Marker over any bruise that develops and you must own it!
  11. I am sorry to say that I do not know. It does seem a reasonable guess.
  12. Different types of excitation produce different profiles. I doubt any reasonable person would be excited by the sophomoric idolization exhibited by both sides of the political fence on this board. The most that could likely be mustered is a pitiful laugh and some lingering fear for the future of humanity if any person truly believes the claptrap they are spouting.
  13. It is a legitimate concern because newer medicines and procedures can cause the profile of a cardiac reaction to mimic that of basic physical excitement. The staff who monitor the EKG readings of several patients in recovery can not investigate each occurrence which is most often simple enjoyment but may be an indicator of an impending serious condition. It is a consideration also that to have staff check each patient each time will interrupt patient "sessions" and cause emotional strain which can complicate recovery. Policies and procedures must be amended to cope with these changes. Such policies change only when a sufficient number of studies have been published. I have read that there was once a government program to translate all text in: Playboy into Braille for the sight-impaired. The demise of the program for budget reasons took the magazine away from the only people who could believably claim they only had it for the articles.
  14. Why do men do anything?
  15. I am compiling information for a report on pornography viewed by patients while in hospital and so I can assure you that the estimate is valid: "35% of all internet downloads are related to pornography." https://www.webroot.com/us/en/resources/tips-articles/internet-pornography-by-the-numbers
  16. This rang a faint bell in the back of my mind but I could not at once associate it with any relevant factor. I have read now on: www.weirduniverse.net of when actor: Alan Devlin was required to arrive at the theatre an hour early and have a: 'minder' to prevent a recurrence of his being quite drunk and flubbing his lines and walking off the stage to go have a pint. Were you a: "sober-sitter" to prevent their having a drink or three to steady their nerves before a performance? Did any manage to sneak one past you?
  17. We have a few DVDs with multiple movies so that we will not be bothered with disc changes while snuggled in for movie night. One of my favorites is: Jewel Robbery (1932) followed by: The Mystery of Mr. X (1934). They are well together because William Powell is near to David Niven in sophistication and I feel that Robert Montgomery is a sort of poor-man's David Niven.
  18. I must wonder how many people will see that image and automatically and subconsciously think that: Jane Russell is looking at her cell phone. The admonition against ladies drinking from bottles should be heightened in today's world when it is so easy to photoshop such an image to make it pornographic.
