I must wonder if the conversion to digital has had an effect. To create a digital copy of an unrestored movie would be preserving forever a poor copy. I believe it would make sense to spend more during conversion to perform even a partial restoration. Such would explain why the process of converting entire libraries to digital is proceeding at such a slow pace. I believe this explains why there are fewer older movies available but many of those which are available are prints of much higher quality.
  2. It has aired at some time in the past. I am sorry to say I do not know when and it is not on any schedule now. The article for the movies is at: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/72280/The-Dark-at-the-Top-of-the-Stairs/articles.html I believe such articles are created when a movie is first aired.
  3. This is one of my everlasting favorites: This is a very classic:

  5. I am hoping the title character in *The Blob* (1968) was sexless!

  7. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their friends and relatives. I must trust that God will accept the fallen and give solace to the survivors. I will not defile the earnest sympathy of many posters by using this thread as a platform for comments on gun control but any person may PM me if they wish to know of horrors I saw growing up in a place with the strictest gun control laws possible.

What of a movie in which a butler commits suicide in such a way as to make it look like he was murdered? What of a movie in which a detective dies and a butler must investigate?
  11. > {quote:title=Sepiatone wrote:}{quote} > And WHY was it called the "THIRD" degree? What are the first two? I believe the first would be a policeman asking questions at the scene. The second would be a policeman asking questions in his office at the police station.
  12. I am a cheerful supporter of TCM airing those series complete and in order. Some individual movies in each may not be the best ever made but they all create a thing which is greater than the sum of their parts.
  13. I thank you for your wonderful presentation! I have been dreading this week because the schedule for Friday day is nearly exact of a day which Capuchin created for a TCM Programmers Challenge. He has not made a statement of any kind since we saw the schedule but he smirks in a vexing manner each time I mention it. I have heard much of: *Fritz the Cat* (1972) which was on the original schedule for Underground on Friday night. I am sad to see that it has been replaced with a documentary. I am torn about: *A Carol for Another Christmas* (1964) because the premise is interesting and I like Sterling Hayden and Eva Marie Saint but I have strong dislike for Ben Gazzara and I like few movies by Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
  14. I believe *The Cheap Detective* (1978) set a new standard in silliness as to who was the murderer but it was also a silly murder mystery so it was appropriate.
  15. I found once a micrometer in the refrigerator. I asked him why it was there. He said it was there for the same reason that one of my wood chisels was in the soap tray in the shower. It is now our habit to move things we find find in odd places to where they will be more conspicuous. It is much easier than fretting about it.
  16. > {quote:title=rohanaka wrote:}{quote} > SF, not sure if I will catch that one.. I recall the previews from way back when for that movie and probably is not my cup o' tea. I fear that many will not watch it because it is a genre which is not their favorite. I hope that some may see beyond the superficial window-dressing. There is one scene which is quite frightening but there is one also which is uniquely funny which touches my heart. It is a story of a young woman who has her old life stripped away and she must build a new sense of self within the confines of government dictates. She knows she must be different from what she was but she resists also change as do we all. It is a story of rebellion and love and her growing self-awareness of what she is at heart. It has startling and stark realism when compared to the tear-jerkers of the 1940s. I believe that is why it touches me deeply. I do hope you will give it a chance.
  17. I do not know the true origin of this and I have seen several versions: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mailbox earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay the car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first. But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my checkbook off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside to my desk where I find the can of Coke that I had been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside so I don't accidentally knock it over. I see that the pop is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye--they need to be watered. I set the Coke down on the counter, and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I will be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: the garden isn't watered the car isn't washed the bills aren't paid there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter the flowers don't have enough water there is still only one check in my check book I can't find the remote I can't find my glasses I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it. But first I'! ll check my e-mail.

  19. I hope all will forgive that this concerns dancing and not song but I am wondering if this might by some be considered sacrilege:

I tremble to think what you will wish to acquire after you watch *La Femme Nikita* (1990) which is scheduled for March 23, 2013. I must wonder if the Steyr AUG arouse any passion.
  21. > {quote:title=EugeniaH wrote:}{quote} > Second-fastest test: You walk into a room. Quick, what was it that you came in to get? I am happy to say that is common for people of all ages. There has been much research on it and it is current consensus that it is because the human mind retains things in segments rather than as a continuous stream and a doorway acts as a division point between segments. That it happens to all is shown by the fact that researchers often use college students for their testing and analysis. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17470218.2011.571267 It is often thought to be a sign of aging because older people tend to be more focused on achieving results and so any happenstance which affects their ability to complete their task is far more frustrating and therefore noticeable and memorable than it would be for a flighty youngster.
